    BHM Fact #27 Will Smith: First Ever Rap Grammy

    Will Smith wins first ever Rap Grammy One day I went around at work and asked a bunch of 18 to 21 year olds if they knew what Will Smith’s first profession was. Everyone of them said Actor. When I said no I was argued down even when I showed them his discography. Will Smith was and still is a Rapper. Over the years he has done more acting, but he still can work a mic. In 1988 WIll Smith and Jazzy Jeff who were known as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, won the first ever Rap Grammy. Back then the rap portion of the show was not televised, so it was not shown. They won for the song Parents Just don’t understand.     Eartha Kitt is a true symbol of courage. Many know that she recorded the 1953 hit Santa Baby which reached the top 10 of the billboard Hot 100. However what many don’t know is what she endured to get there. Eartha Kitt was conceived in Rape and born on a cotton plantation. She was also able to speak 5 languages.     BHM Fact #25 Sally Hemings: Mother of Thomas Jefferson's Kids

    Sally Hemings is one of the most famous—and least known—African American women in U.S. history. For more than 200 years, her name has been linked to Thomas Jefferson as his “concubine,” obscuring the facts of her life and her identity. The historical question of whether Jefferson was the father of Hemings' children is the subject of the Jefferson–Hemings controversy. Following renewed historical analysis in the late 20th century, and a 1998 DNA study (completed in 1999 and published as a report in 2000) that found a match between the Jefferson male line and a descendant of Hemings' youngest son, Eston Hemings, the Monticello Foundation asserted that Jefferson fathered Eston and likely her other five children as well. However, there are some who disagree. In 2018, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation of Monticello announced its plans to have an exhibit titled Life of Sally Hemings, and affirmed that it was treating as a settled issue that Jefferson was the father of her known children.     BHM Fact #24 Prince: Creator of the Minneapolis Sound

    A virtual one-man band, Prince sculpted and created the Minneapolis Sound through his keyboards, screeching, almost pleading vocals and erotic live shows. Named after his father's jazz band, the Prince Rogers Band, Prince Rogers Nelson had music in his blood from birth.   Prince is said to be a perfectionist who is highly protective of his music. He writes, composes and produces the majority of his music himself and plays most of the instruments on his albums. Prince holds the record for longest pop-album, Emancipation (1996), which is exactly 3 hours long. He changed his name to the unpronounceable glyph O(+> from 1993 to 2000.

    Tiger Woods becomes first African-American to win the Masters as well as the youngest winner, and his 12-stroke margin of victory also sets a new Masters record However Tiger Woods was not the first black professional golfer.     Jack Johnson became the first African American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in 1908. He held onto the belt until 1915.     BHM Fact #21 The Statue Of Liberty

    The Statue of Liberty was created to celebrate the end of slavery. She has the chains to prove it! Although this has been hidden for more than 125 years, believe me a lot of African Americans know this about the statue of liberty. Did you know she did not have that pedestal when she was first offered by the French? The French asked them to build a pedestal but it hides her feet. What were they trying to hide? SLAVE CHAINS! Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was the sculptor who made the Statue of Liberty. Bartholdi, left broken chains at the feet of Lady Liberty to remind us of the freedom from oppression and servitude. These chains are unseen by visitors as they sit atop the pedestal, however, they can be seen from an aerial view The National Park Service has since changed the page on the Statue of Liberty, to tell the true story and show the chains on her feet.
