Conference Championship best bets and picks against the spread

In the opinion of one of our two hosts, this is the best NFL weekend of the season. Championship weekend routinely brings together at least three of the four best teams in the league, if not all four, and this season is no exception. The Packers and Buccaneers get things going on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game, and then the Chiefs and Bills cap off the night in the AFC Championship Game.
Start your Championship Weekend prep with Michael Beller and Vic Tafur on The Athletic Football Show. The guys offer up their picks for sides and totals in both games, highlighting their absolute favorite plays of the weekend. And hey, Beller found a fun prop he likes, while Vic came up with a new segment to put a bow on the episode.

Deshaun Watson, Brandon Staley, Eric Bieniemy, and more: NFL headlines with Mike Sando, and a Kansas City Chiefs Team Visit with Nate Taylor

First up, The Athletic’s Mike Sando joins the show to run through a number of headlines, hirings, rumblings, and general goings-on around the NFL over the last week or so, including Deshaun Watson’s tenuous relationship with the Houston Texans, the possibility he forces a trade to another team, potential landing spots, and more, Brandon Staley’s new gig as Los Angeles Chargers head coach, the Sean McVay-Jared Goff marriage on the rocks, Eric Bieniemy getting left off the head coaching carousel so far, how race is seemingly playing a factor in how franchise’s make their coaching staff decisions, and much more.
Plus, The Athletic’s Nate Taylor stops by for a Kansas City Chiefs Team Visit to discuss the injury status of Patrick Mahomes, and whether the franchise QB will be under center for Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Bills, the quietly important and underrated Chiefs defensive players, Eric Bieniemy becoming emblematic of biased hiring practices in the NFL, and much more.

One of my must listens

I have enjoyed listening to Mays since his time at Grantland. His energy and enthusiasm are infectious, plus I love his infatuation with O-line play. Nate Tice and Lindsay Jones bring great perspective and are excellent in their own ways too.

I always set aside time for this podcast. While they usually end up teaching me something I didn’t know, I listen because it feels like a football conversation with friends.

Play analysis

I love that you guys analyze big plays from games since it provides a lot more insight than most sports podcasts.

I wonder if there was a way you could create content for people who love football but want to learn more of the vocabulary? What are the specifics of a Tampa 2 defense, what is the 3 technique on a defensive lineman, what’s a Mike linebacker etc? I want to be able to speak the same language as you guys do when you get into deep dives dissecting plays.

Great work, keep it up!
