You Know More About Marketing Than You Think You Do

I've been a mentor for the Digital Solutions program for three years. In that time I've worked with close to a hundred small businesses across Tasmania—tradies, retailers, hospitality businesses, creatives, service providers, farmers. A hundred different industries, a hundred different situations. And almost every single one of them walked into their first session and said the same thing. "I'm not good at marketing." Sometimes politely. Sometimes with considerably more colourful language. But the same sentiment, over and over, session after session. And here's what I've discovered, close to a hundred times now: they're wrong. Not a little bit wrong. Completely wrong. By the end of almost every session, it becomes abundantly clear that these business owners do know marketing. They are good at it. They've been doing it all along. They just couldn't see it. This episode is about why that happens—and why I suspect it might be happening to you too. You don't need to become a marketing expert. You need to recognise that you already are one—built from years of knowing your customers, caring about your work, and showing up for your community. This episode helps you see it. Why I Created a Conference (And Why Events Might Be Your Best Marketing Move)

I want to tell you about something that has me completely, utterly, still-floating-months-later on a high. The Tasmanian Women in Business Conference happened earlier this year. And the speakers, the conversations, the connections made in that room—I genuinely don't have words for it. Actually, I do have words. I have a whole podcast episode's worth. But here's the thing I want to share that goes beyond how incredible the conference was: I never created this conference for marketing reasons. Not even a little bit. I created it because I saw a gap—a gap in connection, in community, in the experience of being in a room with other women who truly understand what it's like to build something. That was the whole idea. And yet, without engineering it, without planning for it, without even thinking about it—it turned out to be one of the most powerful things I've ever done for my business. In this episode, I'm sharing the story of why I created the conference, what it felt like to see it come to life, and the realisation that hit me afterwards about events as a marketing tool. Because I think events are one of the most under-utilised and misunderstood marketing activities available to business owners—and most people are either not doing them at all, or doing them in completely the wrong way. The best marketing you'll ever do isn't a campaign. It's creating something genuinely valuable for people you genuinely care about. This episode shows you what that looks like in practice. Stop Looking for the Shortcut: The Overnight Success Myth Nobody Talks About

If you've ever seen an ad promising six figures in ninety days, or a "simple system" that generates passive income while you sleep, and felt that uncomfortable cocktail of hope and inadequacy—this episode is for you. Because here's what those ads don't tell you: I've been in business since 2014. Twelve years of building, learning, failing at things, succeeding at things, and showing up consistently even when it was hard. And in those twelve years, I have never once found a shortcut that actually worked. The overnight success story is almost always a story that started years—sometimes decades—before the overnight part. You're just seeing the moment the compounding became visible. Not the quiet, unglamorous, unsexy work that made it possible. And the gap between what you're being shown and what's actually true is doing real damage to real business owners who believe it, invest in it, don't get the promised results, and then conclude that they're the problem. You are not the problem. The shortcut is the problem. Overnight success is a myth. Consistent, genuine effort over time is not. This episode tells you the truth about which one actually builds a business worth having. 👉🏼 Learn more about the Marketing Momentum Membership here. The Marketing Audit Nobody Talks About (But Every Business Owner Needs to Do)

Here's something most business owners have never actually done: traced the complete journey their customers take from the very first moment they discover the business to the point where they're telling everyone they know about it. Not assumed it exists. Not hoped it's working. Actually mapped it out, stage by stage, and looked honestly at what's there—and what's not. Because here's the truth: your customer is on a journey right now whether you've designed it or not. People are discovering you, forming impressions, making decisions, and having experiences that will determine whether they buy, whether they stay, and whether they send other people your way. The only question is whether any of that is happening intentionally or just by accident. For most businesses, it's mostly accident. And that gap between what you hope is happening and what's actually happening for your customer? That's where the revenue is disappearing. In this episode, I'm walking you through how to design your customer journey intentionally—and if you're already in business, how to audit what you've already got so you can find the gaps, plug the leaks, and create an experience that turns first-time buyers into lifelong fans. Your customer is on a journey right now. This episode helps you make sure it's one worth taking. The Most Undervalued Marketing Tool You Already Have

If you've ever spent hours agonising over your content strategy, your ad creative, or your email subject lines trying to attract more customers—while giving very little thought to the experience your existing customers are having—this episode is going to reframe something important. The most powerful marketing tool in your business isn't a new platform, a clever tactic, or something you need to learn from scratch. You already have it. You're just probably not treating it as the strategic marketing priority it deserves to be. It's customer service. And not the reactive, damage-control version most people think of. Customer service as a deliberate, intentional experience that retains customers, generates word-of-mouth, and creates the kind of loyalty that no ad campaign can buy. In this episode, I'm making the case for why customer service is one of the most undervalued and overlooked marketing strategies in business—and why the gap between understanding that it matters and actually treating it as a priority is costing most businesses more than they realise. Acquisition gets customers. Service keeps them. And keeping them is where the real growth is. Going Back to Work After 10 Years of Self-Employment: Why It's Not What I Expected (And Why I Think It Might Be the Best Thing I've Done)

After ten years of running my own business—building the New School of Marketing, this podcast, working with clients, creating courses and memberships—I recently did something I genuinely didn't know how to feel about. I went back to work. Part-time, at a local high school. And while my business absolutely continues, walking back into an employed role after a decade of complete independence brought up a lot of feelings I wasn't prepared for. Questions I had to sit with. A story I had to rewrite about what success is supposed to look like. This episode is that story. The honest version. Because I think there are a lot of people out there facing similar crossroads—whether it's going back to employment, pivoting their business, scaling back, or making a choice that doesn't fit neatly into the "build and scale forever" narrative we're all sold. And I want you to hear this clearly: it is not failure. It is growth. And sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say yes to something that surprises you. Growth doesn't always look the way you planned. Sometimes the most interesting chapter is the one you didn't see coming. Why I Used to Think Radio Advertising Was a Waste of Money (And Why I Was Completely Wrong)

If you've ever dismissed radio advertising as outdated, untargeted, and impossible to measure, this episode is going to challenge everything you think you know about it. For years, I was a digital marketer through and through. I loved the precision of Meta ads, the trackability of email, the data behind every decision. Radio felt like something businesses did before the internet existed—expensive, vague, and impossible to optimise. Why would anyone spend money shouting into the void when you could target people on Facebook down to their postcode and their interests? And then I moved to regional Tasmania. And everything I thought I knew got quietly, completely dismantled. In this episode, I'm sharing the experience that genuinely shifted my thinking—not just about radio, but about the assumptions we carry into our marketing without ever questioning them. Because the biggest lesson from this story isn't really about radio at all. It's about context. And how the best marketing advice is always specific to your market, your audience, and your community—not a universal truth handed down from someone who's never set foot in your world. The best marketing isn't the most sophisticated or the most digital. It's the most relevant to your market. This episode proves it. Why Your Marketing Isn't Broken (You Just Haven't Waited Long Enough)

If you've ever tried a marketing strategy for a few weeks, decided it wasn't working, and switched to something completely different—only to do the same thing again a month later—this episode is going to be a little uncomfortable. In the best possible way. Here's what nobody tells you when they're selling you on the latest marketing tactic: results take time. Real time. Not six weeks. Not ninety days. Often six to twelve months before a strategy is even worth properly evaluating. And in a world of instant everything, most business owners simply aren't willing to wait long enough to find out if what they're doing actually works. So they flip-flop. They try Instagram, then abandon it for LinkedIn, then pivot to email, then hear about something new in a Facebook group and start over again. They're not failing at marketing—they're just never giving any single strategy long enough to compound into something real. Marketing isn't broken. You just haven't waited long enough. This episode shows you how to stay the course.
