    Vlad Tepes: From Dracul to Dracula

    On our last episode for Halloween, we are covering the Grandaddy of all Spooks: Vlad Tepes! His childhood was unusual as he spent it as a hostage in a Sultan's court. After being released he vowed to reclaim his throne and fight against the Turks. In total he would regain his throne 3 times. Along the way he implemented fear tactics and severe punishments; his favorite being impalement. No one was excluded from his path of destruction. During his lifetime poems, ballads and rumors were created about him. Since the publication of Dracula in the 1890s his legacy has grown to include being synonymous with vampires and the undead.     Marquis de Sade: Sadistic Satirist

    For our second week of October, we are staying in France to look at the life and legacy of Marquis de Sade. Most authors write what they know, and he knew much about debauchery, perversion, depravity and torture. Themes and values in his life made it into everything he wrote about. His books were also mixed with his political views and can be viewed as a kind of satire. Additionally, he was an aristocrat who lived through the French Revolution, gained seats in the new government, was sent to exile, was in prison for nearly half his life, carried on adulterous affairs and angered Napoleon. He also believed in a life where he could do whatever he wanted, whenever, however and to whomever.     Gilles de Rais: Medieval French Serial Killer?

    Welcome to our first episode of Spooky Season! We are kicking it off with a bang with Gilles de Rais. He was a knight for Charles VII, he fought alongside Joan of Arc and was made Marshall of France for his accomplishments in the Hundred Year War. He was also a spendthrift who loved producing extravagant plays, with free food and drink for all. It also seemed he liked to dabble in the Dark Arts, alchemy & demon summoning! He is maybe most remembered for possibly being the most prolific serial killer in all France, with estimations as much as 600 bodies!     Weird History: Adam Worth: Real Life Moriarty

    This week we are diving back into true crime with Adam Worth: the Napoleon of Crime! He started off as a petty thief but quickly rose to form his own criminal gangs in New York, most notably for bank heists. Eventually he fled to England and Paris, where he was followed by the Pinkertons. He would spent 25 years as the head of several international criminal gangs. His most notable crime was stealing the highly-prized Gainsborough painting of Duchess Georgiana. Though it's not known by many, his exploits would become the basis for Professor Moriarty, nemesis to Sherlock Holmes!     Weird History: Isabella Goodwin: Female Sherlock Holmes

    This week we are taking a trip back to the early 1900s in New York City to meet the city's first ever female detective: Isabella Goodwin. Goodwin spent nearly 30 years on the force, mostly working as a matron in the local jails, then as an undercover cop. She was so good at this that over her career it is believed that she helped to solve over 500 cases working undercover. Her most notable was the Taxicab Robberies in 1912.     Weird History: Strange English Lords

    What happens when you mix eccentrics with the very wealthy? You get some really strange behavior! There's the introverted English lord who built a tunnel system under his estate to hide from everyone; another who tried to ride a bear and ate only rice pudding; and another who may have taken to cross-dressing.
