How Churches Should Respond to Domestic Violence

⚠️ Content note: This episode includes frank discussion of domestic violence, including childhood abuse, dating violence, the murder of a loved one, and the misuse of faith teachings to keep people in harm’s way. Please care for yourself as you watch. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233 or thehotline.org. Domestic violence happens everywhere: in the parking lot, in the pews, and in the pulpit. Rev. Dr. Raushanah Butler explains why so many churches respond with “let’s just pray about it,” and what it takes to move from good intentions to prepared care.In this episode of The Scholar, Unscripted, Rev. Dr. Rashanna Butler, a recent Doctor of Ministry graduate of Candler School of Theology and a three-time survivor, shares the research behind her project “Violence: From the Parking Lot to the Pew to the Pulpit.” Her work grew out of grief. In 2016, her childhood best friend was murdered, leaving five children behind. Since then, Dr. Butler has turned her anger into advocacy and equips faith communities to recognize abuse, respond to it, and prevent it.We discuss:→ Her four-part framework for churches: trauma-informed care, clear response protocols, community partnerships, and evaluation→ Why domestic violence is about power and control, and how patriarchal church structures can produce silence→ Theologies of harm: how “submit,” “forgive,” and “Jesus suffered” get turned into weapons→ Why every congregation needs a clear, public theology on domestic violence→ Teen dating violence, Gen Z, and modeling healthy relationships for young people→ Why this is “an us problem,” not only the victim’s problem“Faith communities cannot assume that silence means safety.”“May we become the church survivors can turn to and not recover from.”The episode closes with a moment of silence led by Dr. Butler for those who suffered without being heard.🎓 Learn more about The Candler Foundry: candlerfoundry.emory.eduCandler in Conversation is the official podcast of Candler School of Theology at Emory University, produced by The Candler Foundry.#DomesticViolence #FaithAndAbuse #TraumaInformedCare #BlackChurch #PastoralCare #Theology #CandlerSchoolOfTheology #SurvivorSupport
