I've lived in El Paso for 20 years and had no idea. I had no idea that in 1917 El Paso customs officers were stripping Mexicans - men, women and children - naked and delousing them with chemical agents. The injustice was more than Carmelita Torres could take. On Jan. 28, 1917, Carmelita, a 17-year-old Mexican housekeeper who commuted by trolley daily to El Paso for work, led the biggest protest the Juárez-El Paso border has ever seen.
