    Episode 117: Pokemon Double Trouble

Welcome back to The Pokémon Snapshot! This week, we’re heading to the ultimate tourist trap with Episode 117, "Pokémon Double Trouble." We’re arriving at Kumquat Island, where Ash is immediately tackled on the beach by a woman who is absolutely convinced he is her son, Travis. ⚡ In This Episode: Not Ash's Mom: We meet Luana, the final Orange Crew Gym Leader, who practically suffocates Ash in a hug (and we discuss the hilarious visual differences between the English and Japanese dubs during the embrace). The Green Initiative: Team Rocket shows up in an "eco-friendly" Rhydon Mech powered by Arbok and Lickitung on treadmills, only to accidentally melt a hole in their own machine and blast off before the 10-minute mark. A Petty Rivalry: Years before Double Battles were officially a thing, Ash enters a Tag Battle with Pikachu and Charizard—but they spend the first half of the match getting into a petty grudge match and attacking each other instead of their opponents. The Tag Battle Comeback: Charizard finally catches a falling Pikachu, and the two team up to pull off an epic flying combo to take down Alakazam and Marowak for the Jade Star Badge. 🐵 Who's That Pokémon: Mankey! Jeff leads a deep dive into the perpetually pissed-off Pig Monkey Pokémon, Mankey! The Delinquent Monkey: We break down the name origins, including the English mashup of "Manic/Cranky Monkey" and the brilliant Japanese pun using "Yanki" (slang for an aggressive delinquent or hooligan). Pig-Monkey Biology: Learn how Mankey's design takes the real-world Japanese macaque (snow monkey) and playfully slaps a pig snout right on its face. The Cycle of Rage: We discuss Mankey's hilarious lack of object permanence, how it gets furious just from being lonely, and its miserable existence of getting so mad it falls asleep, only to wake up angry about its own dreams. Episode 116: Pokemon Food Fight

Welcome back to The Pokémon Snapshot! This week, we’re tackling Episode 116, "Pokémon Food Fight" (or as it’s known in Japan, "Enter the Snorlax"). Team Ash is stranded on an island, starving, and forced to deal with a broken Pokéball, an incredibly annoying kid, and a very hungry Snorlax. ⚡ In This Episode: Zech Mandeville: We meet Golzar, a whiny kid growing flowers in his hair who the guys relentlessly mock and permanently rename "Zech Mandeville." Grabbing the Wrong Balls: Ash tries to battle Zech's Gloom with Charizard, but he's so hungry he keeps grabbing the wrong Pokéballs. This leads to a terrible type-matchup with Squirtle and Ash eventually shattering Snorlax's ball on a boulder. The "Ash-le" Costume: With Snorlax's Pokéball broken, the gang has to manually drag the 1,000-pound Pokémon over a mountain. Their master plans include heavy deforestation, Not Brock's hidden apple, and Misty forcing Ash to dress up in a giant apple costume (lovingly dubbed "The Ash-le"). The Mecha-Meowthinator: Team Rocket arrives with a Meowth mech suit to steal a Pokémon food shipment, only to face the wrath of a newly awakened, incredibly pissed-off Snorlax using pure "navel power." Final Ratings: Josh hands out a 4/10 and Jeff gives it a 5/10, as the realization of how incredibly long the upcoming Johto arc is begins to set in. ☠️ Who's That Pokémon: Nidorina! Jeff leads a deep dive into the Poison Pin Pokémon, Nidorina! Name Origins: We break down the linguistic layers of her name, from the Latin word nidor (meaning stink) to the Japanese nido (meaning two times), a meta-reference to the first-ever gender-split evolutionary line. Monstrous Inspirations: Discover how Nidorina's unique design is a wild mashup of rabbits, porcupines, rhinos, and classic Japanese Kaiju monsters. Gentle but Gross: We discuss her surprisingly gentle nature, how she retracts her toxic barbs around family, and the slightly gross Pokédex fact that she chews food into a paste for her children. Snapshot Rewind: The Mystery at the Lighthouse

Welcome back to The Pokemon Snapshot! This week, because real-life adult responsibilities and general life chaos got in the way of a new recording, we are opening up the vault for a special "Snapshot Rewind" of The Mystery at the Lighthouse. We are throwing it back to an absolute Kanto classic from the archives, recorded back when former co-host Tyler was still on the mic with Jeff. In This Episode: The Stick Method: Ash attempts to catch a wild Krabby by lunging at it with a literal stick, and when the crab chops it to pieces, he simply throws a Pokéball and miraculously catches it. This also leads to Ash's completely confusing discovery of the six-Pokémon carry limit. Bill the Researcher: Team Ash stumbles upon a creepy, ancient-looking lighthouse and meets the legendary Pokémon researcher Bill, who is inexplicably stuck inside a giant Kabuto costume. The Melancholic Dragonite: Bill reveals he has been communicating with a massive, mysterious Pokémon—which Jeff points out is obviously just a really big Dragonite—singing out into the ocean fog. Unfortunately, Team Rocket shows up with a bazooka to completely ruin the friend-zone meetup. Forced Life Lessons: Tyler absolutely roasts the episode's pacing, comparing its forced, feel-good life lessons to an episode of Seventh Heaven, Dawson's Creek, or a Disney Channel sitcom. 🦀 Who's That Pokémon: Krabby!Jeff leads a deep dive into the River Crab Pokémon, Krabby, highlighting that its Japanese name is literally just the English word "Crab". We discuss its starfish-like ability to regenerate its torn-out pincers, and we cringe over the Pokémon Crystal Pokédex entry that claims it swallows mouthfuls of sand for nutrients. Episode 115: The Pokemon Water War

Welcome back to The Pokémon Snapshot! This week, we’re cooling off with Episode 115, "The Pokémon Water War," an episode so full of filler it could join the cast of Vanderpump Rules. We’re taking a detour to Ascorbia Island—named after ascorbic acid, aka Vitamin C—where Ash and the gang run into a warehouse fire and a very familiar-looking fire captain. Kind of Brock: We meet Captain Aidan, the leader of a specialized firefighting team of Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise, who looks suspiciously like a certain member of the main cast. The Return of the Shades: When Ash's Squirtle loses its firefighting confidence after being rescued by the professionals, it busts out the iconic Squirtle Squad sunglasses to reclaim its "cool" factor. Bad Poké-Parenting: We discuss whether Ash and Captain Aidan are reinforcing bad behavior by letting Squirtle throw a temper tantrum just to get its way in training. Team Rocket’s Portable Fan: Team Rocket manages to capture the turtle squad and uses Pikachu's electricity to power... a portable desk fan?. The Apartment Rescue: Squirtle and the lead Wartortle (collectively dubbed the "Squwartortles") team up to save an "idiot kid" from a burning building, ending the day with a dramatic handshake and a final salute. Final Ratings: Josh hands out a 3/10 and Jeff goes even lower with a 2/10, officially labeling this one a "boring filler" episode. Jeff leads a deep dive into the mid-stage Water starter, Wartortle! We break down the English and Japanese name origins, including the "Kameru" pun (it's a "Turtle-Tail" that likes to bite). The Minogame Legend: Learn about the 10,000-year-old legendary Japanese turtle that inspired Wartortle’s iconic, furry tail. 10,000 Years of Longevity: We discuss the terrifying prospect of a Pokémon living for 10,000 years and seeing everyone it knows pass away. Episode 114: Pokemon the Movie 2000: The Power of One

Welcome back to The Pokémon Snapshot for a supersized Episode 114! This week, we are tackling the massive theatrical release of Pokémon The Movie 2000: The Power of One (or as it’s much more awesomely known in Japan, Revelation Lugia). We break down Ash's wild Orange Islands adventure to save the world from bizarre weather, apocalyptic storms, and a very weird collector. ⚡ In This Episode: The Collector: We discuss Lawrence III (or "L3") and his giant, Final Fantasy-style flying Colosseum ship. We break down his obsession with capturing Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno to awaken Lugia, and how his villainy stacks up against Mewtwo. The Legend Festival: Ash gets roped into being the "Chosen One" by the anxious, rebellious Melody on Shamouti Island (which Josh lovingly renames "Shabooty Island"), leading to a globe-trotting mission to collect the elemental orbs. Absolute Cinema: We break down the incredible animation, Lugia’s epic aquatic battles, and Team Rocket's noble (and hilarious) sacrifice to save the world using a discarded helicopter propeller and an inflatable raft. Final Reviews: Josh and Jeff hand out their final scores for the film. We discuss the epic soundtrack, the forced cameos from Professor Oak and Delia Ketchum, and the blatant product placement of the promotional Ancient Mew trading card. Who's That Pokémon: Zapdos! Jeff leads a deep dive into the Electric-type legendary bird, Zapdos! We discuss its origins as the mythical Thunderbird, the Spanish root of its name, and its flightless, dump-truck-destroying Galarian counterpart based on the Secretary Bird. 6. Episode 113: Pikachu's Rescue Adventure

    Episode 113: Pikachu's Rescue Adventure

Ash, Misty, and Not Brock may be asleep at camp, but their Pokémon are about to have a full-blown forest meltdown in “Pikachu’s Rescue Adventure”. When Togepi rolls away chasing a group of Ledyba, Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Psyduck, Marill, Venonat, and an unexpectedly stranded Meowth get pulled into a wild chain reaction of cliffs, caves, waterfalls, storms, and near-death cartoon nonsense. What starts as a simple rescue mission quickly turns into a chaotic search party where every problem somehow leads directly into an even bigger one. In this episode of The Pokémon Snapshot, we break down one of the anime’s most visually charming side adventures, from Pikachu and Elekid instantly becoming best friends to Togepi accidentally being adopted by a missing Exeggcute cluster. Along the way, the gang runs into Bellossom’s bizarre stage show, Clefairy chaos, a giant Gyarados, a heroic Snorlax, and enough random forest Pokémon to make Jeff pause frame-by-frame just to keep track of them all. We also talk about the short’s gorgeous animation, its movie-level art direction, and why this little side story works way better than it probably has any right to. Plus, we dive into Who’s That Pokémon? with Exeggutor, laugh about Meowth having the worst solo hike of all time, and try to survive an episode where everything keeps getting worse in the funniest way possible. It’s a weird, adorable, beautifully animated Pokémon misadventure, and honestly, one of the most fun side stories the show has given us so far.
