    College football heaven

    If you are a college football fan, it does not get any better than today. Numerous significant games are on the schedule that will have an impact on the college football playoffs. Plus, Bill Belichick comes to my home state to coach a game. I break it all down in the commentary, Podcast rundown * Why today’s games are so significant * The number one ranked team does not have to win today but their opponent does * Ohio St. is borderline and needs a win; so does Tennessee * We may never see another Saturday like this again * Bill Belichick comes to the Nutmeg State to coach a football game SNY hit with big layoffs SNY, the television home of the New York Mets, has been hit with massive layoffs, according to Andrew Marchand, who covers the sports media landscape for The Athletic. Marchand also has a newsletter on this platform. Marchand reports the regional sports channel is pulling the plug on its “Baseball Night in New York” and “Sportsnite” programs and shutting down its website, leading to layoffs of its editorial staff. SNY will continue to produce pregame and postgame shows for the Mets and Jets. It will also continue to carry the “Mets Hot Stove” program and simulcast the Chris Carton show from WFAN. The media upheaval continues. Expect more, as ESPN is rumored to be making another round of layoffs. The times they are a-changing. Have a splendid weekend and enjoy the college and NFL games.     Harbaugh after the bye, but...

    Can you believe it is already Week 9 of the NFL season? Here we go with another edition of Picks for Kicks, as I give you my prediction on five NFL games. Plus a comment or two about the end of LIV Golf and what it means for the PGA Tour. Podcast rundown * Coach John Harbaugh’s record after a bye week is stunning. * What’s the big deal about Tom Brady returning to Foxboro? * Packers and Patriots both need this game. * Could the Denver Broncos be tested? Some other thoughts * After recording the commentary, word came down that Carson Wentz will be starting QB for the Vikings, replacing the injured Kyler Murray. That does not change my prediction. * Adding to the intrigue of the Patriots-Packers game is that Packers QB Jordan Love leads the NFL in passing yardage at 2,246. * Nothing against the Seattle Mariners for their hiring of Jason Kanzler as their new manager. But what is it with these big league clubs, continuing to hire managers who have zero managerial experience? * I think we are going to have an active few days, leading up to next Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. * Early season college basketball games are not that intriguing but tonight’s contest in Boston should be fun, as No. 4 UConn goes up against No. 16 Michigan. It’s a rematch of last season’s NCAA men’s college basketball title game, won by Michigan, 69-63, seven months to the day, April 6, 2026.     Hold the phone on the Bears

    Are the Chicago Bears in position to make a Super Bowl run? It sure looks that way. But before Bears fans make reservations for Feb. 14, they will need to look at the schedule. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are poised for a run. Can they do it? Murphy told NY Post sportswriters Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on their podcast that Bauers, who is now a free agent, and he have had a good-natured, running commentary all season about his pending free agency and his reference to the Yankees was because they are a big market club. He said once his comments went viral, he called Yankees GM Brian Cashman and apologized. * The Baltimore Orioles say they are willing to trade just about anyone on their roster. It could be an interesting off season, before the lockout anyway. * MLB owners told the MLBPA they are willing to delay implementation of a salary cap until 2028. As expected the MLBPA told the owners to take a hike. Labor Armageddon is now less than a month away. * Sunday afternoon’s Kansas City-Denver NFL game attracted nearly 29M viewers or double the highest rated 2026 World Series game shown in prime time. And remember, the game was not televised in New England, as the Patriots-Dolphins game was being shown. The NFL continues to be The Greatest Show On Earth.     The Jets are a mess

    How in the name of Joe Namath could the New York Jets lose back-to-back home games to the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders? I break it down and what needs to be done in the commentary. Some other quick thoughts * That is quite a ballot released by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee for the baseball Hall of Fame: Every candidate is worthy of being elected. To gain entry, a candidate must be listed on 75% of the ballots. The winner(s) will be announced on Dec. 6. * The piece about how the New York Giants almost landed QB Tom Brady is itself worth the price of buying Peter King’s book The Game. * The fact that North Carolina coach Bill Belichick was even asked at his Monday news conference about his breakup with girlfriend Jordon Hudson, is itself an illustration of how the media has sunken into a pool of clickbait mentality.     Was Pat Murphy out of line?

    Pat Murphy has Yankee universe in a tizzy. The manager of the World Champion Milwaukee Brewers dissed the Yankees in comments made to Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers moments after Milwaukee clinched the World Series Wednesday night with a Game 5 win over Tampa Bay. I break it all down in the commentary. Some other items * The Yankees are shaking up their front office with word that GM Brian Cashman is not renewing the contracts for advisors Brian Sabean and Omar Minaya. Sabean began his career in the Yankees system, before becoming GM of the San Francisco Giants. During his tenure, the Giants won three World Series. After he was phased out of the organization, Cashman brought him back to the Yankees. Minaya worked for the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres, before becoming GM of the Mets. Cashman brought him on board after the Mets and Minaya parted ways. * Huge win for Syracuse football and coach Fran Brown Jr. The Orangemen rallied to beat No. 19 SMU yesterday, 30-27, to improve to 4-4 and 2-4 in the ACC. The victory came one week after Syracuse rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter at North Carolina to defeat Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels in overtime. * Speaking of which No. 1 Miami remains undefeated, after surviving a battle with North Carolina. The Hurricanes held on to win 38-35 and improve to 8-0. * Another nice win for UCLA. The seventh-ranked Bruins are now 8-0 after shuting out Nevada, 27-0. UCLA was 3-9 last season. * No. 6 Utah also remains among the undefeated trio with a 49-25 victory at Cincinnati. The Utes are also 8-0. The Bearcats had upset previously unbeated Texas Tech last week. * No. 4 Indiana does it again, getting a game-tying, 60-yard field goal, before edging Minnesota in OT, 23-16. Regulation finished dramatically, as the Gophers took a 16-13 lead on a 60-yard FG by Luke Drzewiecki. But the Hoosiers quickly marched down the field, as backup QB Grant Wilson completed a 33-yard pass to Charlie Becker, setting the stage for Paddy McAteer’s 60-yard boot to send the contest into OT. * Notre Dame pulled away from Navy to win, 35-13, but the Fighting Irish did not cover. They were a 31-point favorite in the game played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Next up for the Irish is No. 1 Miami. * USC knocked off Ohio St., 30-18, dropping the Buckeyes to 6-2.     Why a MLB lockout of players?

    Now that the World Series is over and the euphoria over the Milwaukee Brewers becoming the champs - after disposing of the Tampa Bay Rays in five games - starts to subside, reality is about to smack the sport and its fans in the face. MLB is headed for a work stoppage with a salary cap at the center of the dispute. A recent publication spelled out why the owners really want that cap. Podcast rundown: * A look at franchise values * NFL vs. MLB * What an ex-commissioner is saying about a cap * Why it could be a long, cold winter that extends into spring and even summer Meanwhile: Maybe Red Sox manager Chad Tracy should have kept him in that wild card game against the Yankees. Some other thoughts * Of course Bo Bichette was going to exercise his option with the Mets. Name one other team that was going to give him $42M to play baseball next year? * Why the Yankees, who have not won a World Series in 17 seasons, are living rent free in Pat Murphy’s mind is beyond me. At the pinnacle of his career, the Brewers manager decides to diss the Yankees within minutes of winning the World Series? Maybe he is still seething because the Yankees swept Milwaukee three games with their torpedo bats to open the 2025 season. * The Chicago Bears acquiring All-Pro Jeff Seymour is a big deal. They arguably now have the best defensive line in football. The Bears are in it to win it all. * The NFC North is the best division in the NFL. * Minnesota at Detroit, Cleveland at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Tampa Bay and Kansas City at Denver are all big division games tomorrow and a great way for the NFL to start November.     Bears can make a statement

    It is Week 8 for the NFL season and there are a number of big games on the docket, including the Chicago Bears at defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Monday night. The Seahawks are coming off of a big win against previously undefeated Kansas City, but the Bears are in position to make a statement, while trying to stay on the heals of the first place Vikings in the NFC North. I give my prediction on that encounter, plus four others in another edition of Picks for Kicks. Which teams are left? * Kudos to the Milwaukee Brewers, who did everything right in winning the franchise’s first World Series title. Now that we can check the Brewers off the list, which of the 30 MLB teams has yet to win a World Series? Here is your answer: In the Mariners case, they are the only club never to play in a World Series. Perhaps it is the curse of their predecessors, the Seattle Pilots, who after one season moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers. * If you picked the Packers to cover against Carolina and took the under, as I predicted in yesterday’s video, you won. Green Bay downed the Panthers, 27-19 last night. They were favored by 3.5 points and the over/under was 47. The o/u bettors had their bacon saved, when Carolina missed a two-point conversion. Once in a blue moon, even I get a prediction right. In this case I was correct twice. Hopefully that is a harbinger for this week’s Picks for Kicks, where I have been in a slump. * By the way, watching last night’s game, emanating from Lambeau Field, brought back memories of when the Packers played some of their home games at Milwaukee’s County Stadium. So I looked it up. Turns out the Packers averaged two to three games at County Stadium per season between 1953 and 1994. * Speaking of which, I once attended a MLB game at County Stadium and saw the Athletics defeat the Brewers, 5-4.
