Like the newspapers where their work appeared, they are going by the wayside. One of my favorite cartoonists was Bill Gallo of the NY Daily News. You could always count on Gallo to capture the moment and he struck gold 62 years ago on this date. The perennial champion New York Yankees appeared to be on the verge of seeing their streak of four straight AL pennants halted, as they fell six games out of first place, under first-year manager Yogi Berra, on Aug. 22, 1964. But like Lazarus, the Yankees were revived and moved into first place, following a shutout by pitcher Whitey Ford against the Kansas City Athletics on Sept. 18. With Hello Dolly a Broadway hit, Gallo was not about to drop the ball: * And speaking of the Yankees, this weekend, New York’s rivals, the Boston Red Sox, can lend them a helping hand, as they play at first place Tampa Bay. If the second place Yankees, who are ticketed to play the Red Sox in the wild card series, have any hopes of snatching first place from the Rays, Boston has to beat Tampa Bay, while the Yankees defeat Arizona. Such a scenario, would set up a huge four-game series between the Yanks. and Rays next week at Yankee Stadium. Obviously, the Yankees, five games out of first going into Friday’s action, must do their part, but they need help from the Red Sox in a big way.
