    S4E231 Don't Answer The Door: The Forgotten Rules of Halloween

    Before Halloween became costumes, candy, and plastic skeletons, it was a night of boundaries. The house was safe. The darkness wasn't. And there were rules for what you did when the dead were believed to walk. In this Halloween special of To The Spirit, we explore the forgotten traditions surrounding Halloween and Samhain... from death knocks, protective rituals, wandering spirits, the Púca, and the death coach to one particularly terrible idea involving walking around your house three times and asking when you're going to die. Then we follow a strange shift in our relationship with the unseen. Instead of keeping it outside... we invited it in. The mysterious rappings at Hydesville led to séances, table-turning, planchettes, talking boards, and eventually electronic attempts to capture voices from somewhere beyond our ordinary senses. And for the final part of tonight's journey, we open three unsettling files: the strange encounters reported during construction of the Stocksbridge Bypass, the 1958 Seaford Poltergeist case on Long Island, and the responsive knocking investigated in Andover, England.
