The book of Hebrews, considered to be written to Hebrews who had converted to Christ and were facing such great persecution for their faith that they considered returning to the Jewish way of worship. The author writes to compel them that Jesus has authored for them a better covenant than that which was delivered by the angels in the form of the Torah. A better promise and rest, better than that which was delivered by Moses in the wilderness. That Jesus is a better and an eternal high priest, occupying a better priesthood than that of Aaron, while the sacrifice he offered once and for all was far better than those earlier presented in the tabernacle of Moses. The book is written to dissuade Hebrews from going back, but to proceed in this newly revealed way. Because if those things that were but shadows meted out such severe punishments for non-adherence, how great and dreadful will the punishment be for those who disregard the message delivered by Jesus, who was higher than Angels, better than Moses, occupied an eternal priesthood in the order of Melchizedek, and made a sacrifice once and for all for the sins of man as compared with the sacrifices that could not take away sin. This is a book relevant to us today to warn us from apostasy and neglect of such great a salvation, spurring us on in our belief and profession of faith in Christ until the end. the Author does this by invoking Abraham, the father of our faith and many other Old Testament believers who perceived the promises of God from afar of and refused to give them up for anything.
