In this second episode of our CORE10 series, we discuss ENGG 202: Engineering Statics with Dr. Markus Dann. Dr. Dann is a professor in the department of Civil engineering and has received many teaching excellence awards.  He provided unique insights regarding topics such as the benefits of cold-emailing profs, why niche common-core courses are beneficial, and why being a professor is his true calling.

We are incredibly excited to welcome our good friend Shanleigh McKeown to the podcast. Shanleigh is a 4th year environmental engineering student with a minor in moral philosophy and profession communications from the University of Saskatchewan and the incoming president of the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students. In this episode, we start by chatting about how ethics may not be adequately represented during engineering education. Then, we discuss the social responsibility of engineers, and how we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that many people pursue engineering to help others and make the world a better place. We wrap up our conversation with how, as part of minority groups, to keep motivated and stay passionate about engineering throughout our university careers. Welcome one and all to our new series! THE CORE10. At the University of Calgary, all engineers must take the 10 first-year courses before going into their majors. This series looks at understanding the insides of each of the courses and the professor's intention behind the courses.

In this first episode of the CORE10 series, we introduce Engg 233: Computing for Engineers, with Dr. Mohammad Moshirpour, an instructor in the department of computer and electrical engineering at Schulich, Engg 233 course coordinator, and flipped classroom enthusiast. Aside from discussing the unique structure of the course, final project and the challenges encountered switching from Java-based language Processing to Python, he also talked about the importance of programming for all engineering majors and leading Schulich Ignite, a club that teaches Introductory programming to high school students and strives to bridge accessibility gap for students across the city. Dr.Moshirpour also tackled the topic of engineering education, the book he is writing, and how to manage workload and stress in first year.

It's that time of year when you have to decide your engineering major you want to go into to determine your career path. In this episode, we are joined by Hiten Mahal a first-year representative with the ESS. In this episode, Eric and Shivek discuss our experiences in choosing majors and what brought us to said decisions. We also share resources and tools one could use to help inform your decision.

We are so excited to present an interview with Samson Hua, a third year dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Management, as part of the Weird Gears Interview Series. Samson is the current VP Operations of the ESS and the co-president of AC Robotics (acrobotics.ca), a club that strives to involve youth to become the leaders of tomorrow through STEM based projects where innovation and confidence are fostered. We discuss Samson’s love for 3D printing, and how a patch obsession played a factor in becoming involved in student leadership.
