    Podcasts in Education

    Hey teachers! My name is Nicole Schappert and I have some pretty amazing news! The time of only using paper and pencil assessments are over! There are so many ways that teachers can use technology to assess students. Did you ever think podcasts would be one of them? Podcasts are published audio files that can be listened to, wherever and whenever you want. Utilizing podcasts in the classroom helps increase student engagement, as well as improve teaching and learning practices. Students can easily create their own podcast to answer questions, discuss a topic, or present a project. Teachers can assess these podcasts using a rubric. As a 7thgrade learning support teacher, I feel that podcasts can really help students who have specific learning disabilities in the area of reading and writing. Although students are not writing a formal response, they can still create a script to say that still goes through the entire writing process. Podcasts are also great for students who have an auditory learning style. Another great thing about using podcasts is that students can share them with peers, allowing them to teach each other. If students know that they are going to have an important audience, besides the teacher, that will be listening to their podcast, the students will most likely put a lot of time and effort to make their podcast the best it can be. Besides using podcasts to assess students, teachers can also use them to teach! There are so many great podcasts out there for every grade level. My personal favorite is SciFri. Each week, two episodes come out on Fridays that are about 50 minutes long. Each episode includes three random topics which usually involve fun facts, current events, and science topics. Within the podcasts, they use engaging audio from what it seems like actual news programs and even phone interviews. This could increase student interest and motivation in the classroom. My favorite part about this podcast is that it can give students choice. Students can pick which episode they want to listen to out of the two episodes based on the random topics included in the titles. I feel like there are so many different ways that teachers can utilize this podcast. For example, students can chose which podcast to listen to and then create a reflection based on what they learned using Flipgrid or create an infographic to summarize what the podcast was about. Either way teachers decide to utilize it in the classroom, students are enhancing their comprehension, listening, and technology skills. Even if using podcasts is new to you, I ask you to try them! You won’t be disappointed. Thanks for listening!
