    Blood, Betrayal and Ghosts: The Extraordinary Life of the Baroness de Pontalba

    What if the most extraordinary Gothic tale wasn't fiction at all? This week, we step into the extraordinary true story of the Baroness de Pontalba, where documented history, Gothic darkness and the supernatural become almost impossible to separate. My Special Guests are Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt and Dr. Rosary O'Neill:    Dr Rory O’Neill Schmitt is the author of six books exploring history, culture, art, and the enduring mysteries of place. Much of her work is rooted in New Orleans, where the past is never entirely past: its houses, streets, legends, and larger-than-life figures continue to inspire stories of hauntings and restless memory. Dr Rosary O’Neill, PHD, is a senior Fulbright drama specialist and winner of nine Fulbright awards, including five to study Edgar Degas in Paris. She has published nineteen plays with Concord Publishers (Samuel French Publishers), including Degas in New Orleans and Marilyn/God, and has published six play/screenplay anthologies, three novels and seven books. Dr O’Neill is a professor emerita at Loyola University, New Orleans, and a member of the Playwrights Division of the Actors’ Studio in New York City. The founder of Southern Rep Theatre, New Orleans, she has received invitations to and sponsorships from American Embassies in England, France, Georgia, Russia and Hungary. She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, University of Cologne, University of Bonn, and the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris. My Special Guest Is Dr Nick Richbell:    Dr. Nick Richbell received his PhD in History from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research focuses on the history of Spiritualism, and his doctoral dissertation examined the life and influence of the medium Maurice Barbanell and his spirit guide, Silver Birch. While Silver Birch's teachings continue to be discussed in Spiritualist churches today, Maurice Barbanell's significant contributions are often overlooked. Barbanell devoted more than six decades to the Spiritualist movement, and Nick’s research seeks to restore his place in history as one of the twentieth century's most influential advocates of Spiritualism. Nick recently completed his book, Silver Birch’s Medium: Maurice Barbanell & Twentieth-Century Spiritualism, scheduled for publication on September 10, 2026. Based on his doctoral research, the book expands on his dissertation with previously unpublished photographs, two new chapters, and substantial revisions incorporating newly discovered archival material. As a Spiritualist himself, Nick embraces the movement's principle of thoughtful inquiry: to question what one reads and hears, and to accept only what resonates through personal experience and reflection.     Why do some places suddenly feel unnaturally cold—and could there be more to it than a simple draught? He has had many psychical experiences and adventures when he was a boy. This led him to formulate his own early theories about ghosts, poltergeists and telepathic veridical dreams of the dead gained through direct encounters with ghosts, spirits and poltergeists.     Why Do So Many Extraordinary Experiences Happen at Night?     The Poltergeist Boy: Between Ghosts and Demons Part 4

    What happens when two of the world's most famous paranormal investigators arrive at the centre of an alleged haunting? Over the previous three episodes, Ciaran Farrell has described a series of extraordinary experiences that, according to his account, began in childhood before following him into boarding school.
