    Ahjamu Umi: Decolonizing Dignity

In Western liberal thought, dignity is framed as an inherent property of the rational individual—universal in theory, exclusionary in practice. For centuries, the colonized, the enslaved, the indigenous, the poor, and anyone deemed “irrational” were denied entry into the category of the human to whom dignity supposedly applies. As the Tricontinental Institute’s Ten Theses on Marxism and Decolonisation reminds us, the struggle for dignity is inseparable from fighting exploitation, racial hierarchy, gendered oppression, and the degradations of the wage system. So in this episode, we push for a revolutionary reframing. Dignity isn’t granted by states or rooted in metaphysics. It’s relational, material, insurgent—forged in collective struggle and grounded in community. To understand dignity on its own terms, we must decolonize it: recover indigenous and anti‑colonial traditions that exceed Euro‑American individualism, and connect them to Marxist and emancipatory movements worldwide. My guest for this episode is Ahjamu Umi. Ahjamu is an author, activist, organizer, and long time student of history, politics and economics amongst other things . His latest work, A Guide for Defense Against White Supremacist, Patriarchal, and Fascist Violence, is a manifesto that offers practical guidance for organizing and building community power—block by block and neighborhood by neighborhood. For more than four decades, Ahjamu has been involved in political organizing and on-the-ground work across Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. He is also a dedicated organizer with the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party, the AAPRP. His work is rooted in a commitment to liberation, self-determination, and building the capacity of ordinary people to defend and transform their communities.
