    Human Beings Change Through Conversations

In this episode, I explore one of the central ideas behind my new book, The Imaginal Coach: Human beings change through conversations. We live in a world overflowing with information, opinions, podcasts, books, videos, and now artificial intelligence. Yet despite having more information than any previous generation, many people continue to wrestle with questions of identity, purpose, fear, uncertainty, and change. Why? Because transformation is rarely about information alone. Drawing on more than thirty years of working with leaders, entrepreneurs, church planters, business owners, and organisations around the world, I share why some conversations simply exchange information while others have the power to transform lives. In this episode, I reflect on several conversations that shaped my own journey and explore why listening deeply, asking thoughtful questions, and creating space for imagination often matter more than having the perfect answer. We also discuss: • Why transformational conversations focus on identity rather than behaviour • The difference between information and transformation • Why leaders are often not lacking information but struggling to make sense of what they already know • The role of curiosity, listening, and disruptive questions in personal growth • Why imagination is essential for hope and change • How coaching helps people discover possibilities they may not yet see for themselves • Why meaningful human conversations matter more than ever in an age of artificial intelligence One of the coaching questions I explore is: "What if the future could be different from your current reality?" Because hope often begins when we imagine a future that does not yet exist. Reflection Questions: • Who has had a transformational conversation with you? • What did they do that made the conversation so impactful? • Who in your life might need a transformational conversation from you this week? • How might you listen more deeply and ask better questions? In a world full of answers, perhaps what people need most is someone willing to listen. Thank you for listening. Next episode: What a Caterpillar Can Teach Us About Change, Leadership, and the Future.

Why I Wrote The Imaginal Coach: Transformation, Hope, and the Power of Conversation

Podcast Episode: Why I Wrote The Imaginal Coach In this episode, I share the story behind my new book, The Imaginal Coach, which will be released on June 15th, 2026. The journey to this book has been an unexpected one. As a teenager growing up in Northern Ireland, leaving school without qualifications and spending ten years working in a factory, becoming an author was never part of the plan. Yet life has a way of taking us on journeys we could never have imagined. Drawing on more than thirty years of working with leaders, entrepreneurs, church planters, charities, politicians, and organisations around the world, I reflect on one of the most important lessons I have learned: Human beings change through conversations. Not through being given the perfect answer, but through being listened to deeply, asked thoughtful questions, and invited to see themselves and their possibilities differently. I also explore the fascinating story behind the book's title. The imaginal stage of a butterfly's development provides a powerful metaphor for personal and organisational transformation. Within the cocoon, imaginal cells carry the blueprint for a future that does not yet exist. At first, they are resisted by the old system, but eventually, they become the catalyst for something entirely new. Many of us find ourselves in similar places today. The old ways no longer fit, the future remains unclear, and yet something new is trying to emerge. In a world increasingly shaped by technology and artificial intelligence, this episode reflects on why deeply human conversations matter more than ever. In this episode: • Why I wrote The Imaginal Coach• The surprising journey from factory worker to author• What thousands of coaching conversations have taught me about change• The butterfly metaphor and the imaginal stage of transformation• Why coaching is about identity and potential, not simply performance• How realistic hope helps us navigate uncertainty and complexity• Why thoughtful questions often matter more than quick answers The Imaginal Coach launches on June 15th, 2026. Thank you for being part of the journey. Mark

When AI Meets Coaching: Hope, Loneliness, and the Future of Human Growth

In this episode of the Healthy Rhythms Podcast, Mark sits down with his friend and colleague Doug to explore one of the most important conversations happening right now: the intersection of AI and coaching. Together, they unpack how AI is already reshaping the coaching world — from supporting reflective practice to strengthening coaching competencies — and why leaders can’t afford to ignore what’s coming. But the episode also goes much deeper. Mark and Doug talk honestly about the growing epidemic of loneliness and the surprising fact that the number one use of AI today is companionship, therapy, and meaningful conversation. They discuss what this means for coaches, leaders, and for a world struggling to find connection amid so much noise. This is a grounded, hopeful, and practical conversation about the future of human growth. It’s about what AI can do, what it shouldn’t do, and why the heart of coaching will always remain profoundly human. In this episode:• Why AI is becoming central to the coaching conversation• The loneliness epidemic and the rise of AI companionship• How AI can support and improve coaching competencies• The lines we need to guard to keep coaching genuinely human• What the future of coaching might look like If you’re a coach, a leader, or just someone curious about where all this is heading, this episode will give you plenty to think about — and maybe even a wee bit of hope.
