    EP220 - So What's Been Happening? - Street Legal

Street Legal Unpacked: The Story Behind 'The Barassi Line' In episode 220 Aaron chats with Matthew Haywood of Street Legal about their new single 'The Barassi Line', the band's origins in Adelaide, influences from pub rock to new wave, their striking artwork and music videos, working with producer Anton Hagop, and upcoming regional tour dates. Street Legal are back with a powerful new single, The Barassi Line, marking an exciting new chapter for the Adelaide indie rock five-piece. Mixed by ARIA Award–winning producer Anton Hagop—known for his work with Silverchair, Powderfinger and Missy Higgins—the track represents the band’s first collaboration with the acclaimed mixer and follows their critically praised debut EP Bruxism. With its driving, interwoven guitars and soaring, anthemic chorus, The Barassi Line captures the band at their most urgent and expansive yet. Lyrically, the track dives into big questions about power, progress and the narratives we’re fed. As vocalist Matthew Hayward explains, it challenges “our relationship with those who control natural resources and shape the cities we live in,” unpacking ideas around growth, wealth and virtue. Sonically and thematically, Street Legal sit comfortably alongside acts like Fontaines D.C., IDLES and Interpol, while continuing to cement their place among Australia’s rising underground scene—with a run of July tour dates set to bring the new single to stages across South Australia and Victoria.
