Human Patterns. Real Leadership. Leadership isn’t a performance problem — it’s a human one. The Kathie Owen Perspective is a quiet, discerning look at leadership through the lens of human behavior, emotional regulation, presence, and pattern recognition. This podcast is for leaders, founders, executives, and advisors who sense that something deeper is at play in how people lead, relate, and make decisions — but haven’t had language for it. Kathie Owen is a consultant and observer of human systems. She studies what happens beneath strategy, titles, and metrics — the unseen patterns that shape leadership outcomes, culture, trust, and power. Drawing from real-world consulting experience, executive conversations, and years of studying emotional regulation and human dynamics, Kathie offers perspective rather than prescriptions. This is not a coaching show. This is not motivation or hustle culture. And it’s not therapy. Each episode offers calm insight into: How leaders regulate (or don’t) under pressureWhy capable people repeat the same patternsThe difference between performance and presenceHow clarity emerges when noise is removedWhat real leadership looks like when no one is watchingSome episodes are reflections. Some are observations from the field. Some are quiet truths leaders rarely say out loud. If you’re drawn to insight over tactics, clarity over control, and leadership that starts with self-awareness rather than force — you’re in the right place. This is perspective — not advice. And sometimes, perspective changes everything.

    305. The Truth About Your Life Isn’t What You Think

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever looked back on your life and realized the biggest lessons weren’t hidden in individual moments—but in the patterns connecting them? In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, Kathie shares one of the most profound insights she gained while writing her newly published book, The Truth Bubbles Up. What began as a memoir became something much bigger. As she rewrote each chapter, she discovered that the stories themselves hadn’t changed—but her understanding of them had. Instead of searching for answers, she began recognizing patterns. That shift transformed the way she sees relationships, leadership, pressure, and personal growth. In this episode, you’ll discover:✨ Why pressure doesn’t create character—it reveals it. 🧠 Why isolated events often distract us from the bigger pattern. 👀 How developing an observer mindset creates clarity instead of judgment. 💬 Why recurring behaviors tell us more than one emotional conversation ever could. 📖 What writing The Truth Bubbles Up taught Kathie about herself—and why those lessons may help you better understand your own life. ❤️ Why your greatest breakthrough may not come from learning something new, but from finally recognizing what has been quietly repeating all along. Whether you’re leading a business, navigating a difficult relationship, or simply trying to understand your own experiences, this episode will help you shift your focus from reacting to individual events to recognizing the patterns that quietly shape your life. 304. Everyone Did Their Job. People Still Got Hurt

Send us Fan Mail What if one of history's oldest stories reveals one of today's biggest leadership blind spots? Most unhealthy workplace cultures don't begin with bad people. They begin with good people who slowly disconnect from the human consequences of their decisions. In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, I explore the story of Pontius Pilate through the lens of leadership psychology, moral disengagement, executive presence, and what I call Human Diligence. This conversation was inspired by Chapter 9 of my book, The Truth Bubbles Up, titled The System Worked Exactly as Designed. For years, I believed that chapter was about lawyers. Today, I believe it's about something much bigger... Systems. Whether we're talking about families, leadership teams, founder-led companies, mergers and acquisitions, courtrooms, or entire organizations, the same pattern appears again and again: 🔹 Everyone follows the process. 🔹 Everyone performs their role. 🔹 Everyone believes someone else owns the outcome. 🔹 And somehow... people still get hurt. In this episode, we explore why that happens and what leaders can do differently. 🎙️ In this episode, you'll learn: 🧠 What psychologists mean by moral disengagement—and why it affects ordinary people, not just bad actors. 👥 Why healthy people can unknowingly participate in unhealthy workplace cultures. 🏛️ What Pontius Pilate's decision to "wash his hands" teaches us about modern leadership. 💼 Why executive presence isn't just confidence or charisma—it's staying connected to the human consequences of your decisions. 🏢 How organizational systems quietly shape behavior under pressure. ❤️ Why policies alone don't build healthy cultures. 🔍 The questions every leader should ask before making decisions that affect people. 🌱 Why Human Diligence may be the missing piece in leadership, culture, and enterprise value. One of my favorite quotes from this chapter is: "When everyone owns a piece, no one owns the outcome." That single observation has changed the way I evaluate leadership teams, workplace culture, and organizational health. Instead of asking: "Who's the villain?" I now ask: "What conditions made this feel normal?" That question changes everything. 📘 Resources mentioned in this episode: 🔗 Read the companion blog post for additional leadership diagnostics, quotes, and practical insights. www.kathieowen.com/blog/moral-disengagement 🔗 Get your copy of The Truth Bubbles Up. 🔗 Learn more about Human Patterns Under Pressure and Human Diligence. www.kathieowen.com 💬 I'd love to hear your perspective. 303. The Real Reason You Feel Excluded | Daddy Ball, Identity & Belonging

Send us Fan Mail ⚾ What if exclusion isn't really about you? Have you ever walked into a room and felt like everyone else knew something you didn't? Maybe you weren't invited.  Maybe everyone else seemed to belong.  Maybe you were left out of the conversation, the meeting, or the decision. Most of us assume those moments mean we've been rejected. But what if they reveal something much deeper? In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, Kathie reads Chapter 7: Daddy Ball from her book, The Truth Bubbles Up, and explores one of the most important human patterns she's ever observed. Although this story begins on a Little League baseball field, it isn't really about baseball. It's about identity, belonging, attachment, exclusion, and the invisible patterns that shape human behavior. As a consultant specializing in Human Diligence™, Kathie has seen these same patterns appear inside founder-led companies, leadership teams, mergers and acquisitions, families, volunteer organizations, and relationships. The baseball field simply became the first classroom. This episode will challenge the way you think about exclusion—and may completely change the way you see people. 🎯 In this episode, you'll discover: ⚾ Why "Daddy Ball" has very little to do with baseball 🧠 The hidden connection between identity and exclusion 👀 Why people often exclude others without realizing they're doing it 💬 What communication breakdowns reveal about a family, team, or organization 🏢 How these same patterns show up in workplaces, leadership teams, and mergers & acquisitions 🌱 Why pressure reveals hidden attachments ❤️ How children often carry emotional burdens they were never meant to carry 🔍 Why curiosity is more powerful than resentment 💡 How learning to observe human behavior creates better leaders and healthier organizations 📚 Featured in this Episode Chapter 7: Daddy Ball From the book: 📖 The Truth Bubbles Up This chapter explores the invisible dynamics of belonging, exclusion, status, attachment, and identity through a deeply personal story that eventually became one of the foundational observations behind Kathie's work in Human Patterns Under Pressure. 🌟 A Powerful Reminder The story isn't about baseball. It's about what happens when adults attach their identity to roles, status, recognition, belonging, or control. The setting changes. The human pattern doesn't. Whether you're leading a company, raising a family, navigating relationships, or trying to understand yourself, these hidden dynamics influence far more than most people realize. 🔗 Resources Mentioned 📖 Get the book: The Truth Bubbles Up 👉 www.kathieowen.com/truthbubblesup 📝 Read the companion article (includes additional insights and resources): 👉 https://www.kathieowen.com/blog/daddy-ball 🎥 Watch this episode on YouTube: 👉 https://youtu.be/E7rIZ5tmTjM?si=Q2FWrtkUTzEsQG2d 🌐 Visit Kathie Owen: 👉 www.kathieowen.com 💬 Let's Continue the Conversation Have you ever experienced exclusion that later helped you understand human behavior differently? This chapter marks the moment everything finally connected. 301. Should Is a Dirty Word (Here's Why)

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever caught yourself thinking... "I should be further along." "They should know better." "This shouldn't be happening." At first glance, the word should seems harmless. But what if it's actually one of the biggest contributors to unnecessary stress, shame, and emotional dysregulation? In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, we explore why "should" is much more than a word—it's often the first sign that we've stopped observing reality and started negotiating with it. You'll discover how our minds move from preferences to expectations, expectations to attachment, attachment to stories, and how those stories quietly shape our emotions, our leadership, our relationships, and our lives. If you've ever struggled with perfectionism, overthinking, guilt, leadership pressure, relationship conflict, or feeling like life isn't unfolding the way you planned, this episode will give you a new perspective. 🎯 In This Episode, You'll Learn: ✨ Why the word "should" is often the first clue that you're arguing with reality. 🧠 How your mind creates stories to escape uncertainty—and why those stories often create unnecessary suffering. 💡 The hidden relationship between preferences, expectations, attachment, and emotional regulation. 🌱 Why non-attachment doesn't mean you stop caring—it means you stop demanding that life follow your script. 💪 What Radical Responsibility really means—and why it doesn't require carrying everyone else's emotions. ❤️ Why courage isn't about having certainty—it's about remaining present when certainty isn't available. 🔍 How to recognize the stories that keep your nervous system activated long after an event has ended. 🤝 Why replacing "should" with curiosity can transform your leadership, your relationships, and the way you speak to yourself. 🔄 A Simple Practice This Week The goal isn't to stop saying the word should. The goal is to notice it. Every time you hear yourself thinking: • I should... • They should... • This shouldn't... Pause. Ask yourself: "Am I observing reality... or am I negotiating with it?" That single question can interrupt the cycle of shame, reduce emotional reactivity, and help you respond with greater clarity and intention. 📖 Continue the Conversation This episode is accompanied by a detailed blog post that expands on these ideas with additional insights and practical takeaways. ➡️ Read the companion article here: www.kathieowen.com/blog/should-is-a-dirty-word 🎤 Human Patterns Under Pressure Live Interested in bringing this conversation to your organization or attending an upcoming live event? 300. The Truth About Human Behavior (Most People Miss)

Send us Fan Mail The Truth About Human Behavior: The Pattern Most People Miss | 7 Lessons That Changed Everything What if the biggest breakthroughs in your life don't come from learning something new... What if they come from seeing something you've been missing all along? After more than 300 podcast episodes, years in corporate wellness, leadership consulting, fitness, and studying human behavior under pressure, I realized something surprising. I wasn't really studying leadership. I wasn't just studying workplace culture. I wasn't only studying nervous system regulation. I was studying people. In this milestone episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, I reflect on the seven lessons that continue to surface no matter where I look—whether I'm observing leaders, founders, athletes, families, workplaces, or my own life. These lessons have become the foundation of my work in Human Patterns Under Pressure and my upcoming Nervous System Reset program. If you've ever wondered why people react the way they do, why pressure changes behavior, or why awareness is the first step toward lasting change, this episode is for you. 🎯 In this episode, we explore: ✅ Why pressure reveals patterns instead of creating them ✅ Why people often respond to meaning instead of reality ✅ Why control is usually an attempt to create certainty ✅ How identity creates pressure—for ourselves and the people around us ✅ Why your nervous system isn't broken ✅ How observation relieves pressure and creates clarity ✅ Why awareness creates choice—and why that changes everything 💡 Key Takeaway Pressure doesn't create who we are. Pressure reveals the patterns we've been carrying all along. The good news? Patterns can be observed. And when we observe them, we create awareness. Awareness creates choice. And choice creates the possibility for a different future. 📚 Companion Blog Post Every podcast episode is accompanied by a detailed blog article with additional insights, examples, and resources. 👉 Read the companion article here: www.kathieowen.com/blog/episode-300-kathie-owen-perspective 🎙 About The Kathie Owen Perspective The Kathie Owen Perspective explores the intersection of: • Human behavior under pressure • Leadership psychology • Workplace culture • Nervous system regulation • Emotional intelligence • Pattern recognition • Founder and executive leadership • Self-awareness and personal growth If you're a leader, entrepreneur, consultant, HR professional, coach, athlete, or simply someone who wants to better understand human behavior, you're in the right place. 299. What Growing Up Around Fear Taught Me About Human Behavior

Send us Fan Mail What if your ability to read people didn't come from intuition alone? What if it came from years of observing fear, uncertainty, and emotional reactions long before you realized you were doing it? In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, Kathie shares one of her most personal conversations yet. She explores how growing up around fear shaped the way she sees human behavior, leadership, workplace culture, relationships, and nervous system patterns. From childhood observations to executive leadership teams, Kathie reveals how many of the behaviors we experience every day are not simply personality traits—they are often nervous system responses to pressure, uncertainty, fear, and change. This episode explores why some people become highly observant, why fear often hides behind control, perfectionism, micromanagement, and certainty, and how awareness becomes the first step toward meaningful change. If you've ever wondered why you notice things other people miss, why you can feel tension in a room before anyone says a word, or why certain leaders create chaos without realizing it, this episode may answer more than you expect. In This Episode 🔹 What growing up around fear taught Kathie about human behavior🔹 The difference between reacting to reality and reacting to a nervous system response🔹 Why fear often appears as control, perfectionism, certainty, or micromanagement🔹 How Human Patterns Under Pressure became the foundation of Kathie's work🔹 What road rage, anxiety, and everyday reactions reveal about nervous system regulation🔹 Why awareness always comes before regulation🔹 How projection reveals hidden emotional patterns🔹 The connection between leadership behavior and nervous system activation🔹 Why many workplace problems are symptoms of deeper human dynamics🔹 The hidden cost of carrying responsibility for other people's emotional states🔹 How fear spreads through families, organizations, teams, and cultures🔹 Why emotional intelligence begins with observationKey Takeaway Most people focus on behavior. Kathie focuses on the pattern underneath the behavior. Because once you can identify the pattern, you have the opportunity to make a different choice. And choice changes everything. 298. They Know You're Under Pressure (And What To Do About It)

Send us Fan Mail Have you ever noticed that when pressure enters the room, people become more of who they already are? Some people become calm. Some become controlling. Some become reactive. Some become curious. Some naturally create stability. In this episode of The Kathie Owen Perspective, we're exploring what pressure reveals about leadership, communication, trust, and the nervous system. Pressure doesn't create the pattern. Pressure reveals the pattern. Whether you're leading a company, a team, a family, or simply trying to navigate uncertainty in your own life, understanding what happens inside your nervous system under pressure can completely change the way you communicate, make decisions, and build trust. One of the most powerful tools I teach my consulting clients isn't a communication technique or leadership strategy. It's observation. When you begin studying pressure situations, you start seeing patterns everywhere. And once you see them, you can't unsee them. In This Episode We Discuss: 🔹 Why humans naturally follow certain people during pressure situations🔹 What a fire alarm can teach us about leadership🔹 How nervous systems communicate before words do🔹 Why your team knows when you're stressed—even when you think you're hiding it🔹 The hidden cost of emotional contagion inside organizations🔹 Why micromanagers aren't usually trying to control people🔹 How uncertainty often drives controlling behavior🔹 Why telling someone to "stop micromanaging" rarely works🔹 The connection between awareness, nervous system regulation, and behavior change🔹 The leadership qualities of Power, Presence, and Warmth🔹 Why trust is built through simple conversations🔹 How leaders create psychological safety without realizing it🔹 Why employees stop sharing important information🔹 The connection between trust, communication, and enterprise value🔹 What pressure reveals about youKey Takeaway Most people spend their lives trying to eliminate pressure. What if pressure isn't the problem? What if pressure is simply revealing the patterns that have been there all along? The more aware you become of those patterns, the more choice you have in how you respond. And that changes everything.
