N+2 Day - buying bikes and half-term adventures

Tom and Katie return at the end of a half term which concluded with an overnight cycling tour and two ‘new’ bikes, and contemplate the kit the children grew out of during lockdown, the terminal velocity of an eight-year-old, leather jackets and the metaphorical link between overtaking, and urination.

Riding a triplet bike - treble the trouble?

Tom, Thomas Ivor, Ruth and, making his Family ByCycle podcasting debut, Baby Bob, reflect on Daddy ByCycle’s first outing on our Thorn ‘Me ‘n U 2’ Triplet bike, finally finishing the tandem off, Thomas Ivor’s exploits in the snow, a fortnight ago, and, er… cook some chips. nduced shortages start to bite, the worst thing about having your bike nicked, and which kitchenware you can clean a crankset with. Tandem tinkering in the lounge

We talk about the Family ByCycle’s annual bike rotation and fettling, specialist tandems (and bigger) for families, scouring eBay for second hand bike parts as Coronavirus-induced shortages start to bite, the worst thing about having your bike nicked, and which kitchenware you can clean a crankset with. Here’s links to our videos on 'things we do to tart up a second hand bike' and 'doing up a tatty Islabike on a budget', and how Thomas Ivor (then aged 11) built his own bike during the first lockdown last year! Let's 'wobble' together!

Do you talk to drivers who close pass you? Are we approaching a critical moment on the roads, as the ranks of retired drivers, swell? Tom examines his interaction with an elderly driver who nearly wiped him out on Sunday afternoon - and seeing other families out on the road, talks about mutual encouragement in the face of challenging road conditions. You can see the original tweet and video here! Find out more about my first ‘Festive 500’ in 2017, and my tips for completing it successfully, here on our blog.

The kids nicked our chocolate.

Back after a few weeks of nocturnal toddler disturbance and a failed outside broadcast, Tom and a partially-dressed Katie find their chocolate stash raided, but still tackle Christmas lists, the Festive 500, Elephant Bikes, air quality, School Streets and the very special moment the ‘boy in the park’ got his new bike, thanks to our online community. If you’ve been affected by the issues raised in this podcast, please tweet us @FamilyByCycle and argue your case.

A random act on ‘Kindness Day’ - Thank You!

A thread on Twitter yesterday led to an impromptu crowdfunder for 'the boy in the park'. Now we're off to collect some bikes. Meanwhile, Thomas Ivor has been riding for 'Children in Need' at school, and shares some of his plans for the winter, and Baby Bob still can't say the word 'duck'...

Riding the rollers with Ruth

Katie and Tom reflect on the weekend's events - talking inaccessible cycle paths, pavement parking and toddle bikes. Meanwhile, seven-year-old Ruth shares her first ride on the rollers - an unexpected triumph!

How long does it take to get out of the house with children?

Competing sets of little legs on the back of the Family ByCycle tandem today, with Rhoda out to prove a point. Bob's been out in the trailer, some thoughts on the end of a strange road racing season, and can you get your kids onto their bikes in less than 48 minutes...?

We failed already. Or did we?

Tom & Katie have both dropped a planned ride, in the first two days, but all six of the Family ByCycle rode a bike somewhere, somehow, today, and like the podcast, we will hit our stride! What will the weekend hold? Warning: Contains Ice Cream.

Is it on? #LockdownByCycle Day 1

Tom (Daddy ByCycle) and 7-year-old Ruth, the fastest child to ride from Land's End to John o'Groats, introduce the Family ByCycle's podcast and our plans to cycle every day during England's Coronavirus 'Lockdown 2'. We talk about previous achievements, our Dutch triplet bike for the school run, and ask if anyone is listening yet! ;-)
