My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). Mishlei 26:3 - A Rod for the Back of Fools (Part 1) שׁוֹט לַסּוּס מֶתֶג לַחֲמוֹר וְשֵׁבֶט לְגֵו כְּסִילִים: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/16/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began what appears to be a local cluster of pesukim about how to deal with ksilim (Mishleic fools). Today's pasuk seems to be part of a subgenre within Mishlei about the proper place of corporal punishment. Some might be turned off to that idea, but I believe we discovered an approach that makes it more palatable. Mishlei 26:2 - Avian Metaphors for Gratuitous Curses (Part 2) כַּצִּפּוֹר לָנוּד כַּדְּרוֹר לָעוּף כֵּן קִלְלַת חִנָּם [לוֹ] (לא) תָבֹא: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/10/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we continued our analysis of yesterday's riddle-pasuk. We began by reviewing what we covered yesterday and soliciting any new approaches or insights from the members of the shiur. We then learned the commentaries of Metzudas David, Meiri, and R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak Gerondi. We spent more time than usual on the nuances of the Targum and Tafsir, and had a digression into a recap of the Abravanel's approach to keri/kesiv. Consequently, we spent most of our time on the questions and only got a chance to hear two approaches before we had to end shiur. Mishlei 26:1 - Meteorological Metaphors for Giving Honor to a Fool Part 2) כַּשֶּׁלֶג בַּקַּיִץ וְכַמָּטָר בַּקָּצִיר כֵּן לֹא נָאוֶה לִכְסִיל כָּבוֹד: Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/3/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we took continued our analysis of the first pasuk in Chapter 26. After reviewing the translations, questions, and approaches from yesterday, I shared my own interpretation. We then dove into the meforshim, learning a whopping SIX approaches! This one was relatively straightforward, but has wide-reaching applications and implications. (Part 2) עִיר פְּרוּצָה אֵין חוֹמָה אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אֵין מַעְצָר לְרוּחוֹ: Length: 39 minutes Synopsis: This morning (6/11/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we continued our analysis of yesterday's pasuk. After reviewing and refining our understanding of yesterday's main peshat, we spent most of the rest of shiur on Saadia Gaon. This led us into a related-but-also-tangential discussion about methodology, some of which was not recorded. We concluded with the Meiri, which included more methodological reflections about teaching. And with that, we have finished Chapter 25! (Part 1) עִיר פְּרוּצָה אֵין חוֹמָה אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אֵין מַעְצָר לְרוּחוֹ: Length: 45 minutes Synopsis: This morning (6/10/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we learned another "straight-up mashal" pasuk - and a pristine one, at that! The idea we developed is so good and so fitting that I'd consider using this as a "starter pasuk" for Mishlei. As a bonus, this pasuk is eminently (and scarily) practical.
