    What are maternity rights?

    In this episode, we discuss your pregnancy and maternity rights, including privacy and dignity at work, breastfeeding, pregnancy loss, maternity pay and leave. We want to see more measures to support and accommodate pregnant women and new mothers working in the education sector. We aim for all schools and colleges to have policies, systems and support in place to back pregnant teachers and support staff and new parents at work.   Thanks to everyone who spoke to us for this episode.     What have Labour's first 50 days meant for education?

    24th August marked Labour’s first 50 days in office. The new Government does not have an easy inheritance and we are realistic that Labour won’t be able to overturn 14 years of damage overnight. The new Government has already signalled a welcome reset of the relationship between Ministers and the profession and they have committed to over-turning the anti union laws introduced by the previous administration.     Since the publishing of this episode, NEU members voted to abolish Ofsted at NEU Conference 2024: Members vote to abolish Ofsted | National Education Union (neu.org.uk) In this episode, Mari and Molly discuss why, after more than 30 years, Ofsted needs to be replaced. They speak to NEU members about their experience of Ofsted inspections and the culture it generates in schools, and why they feel now is the time for change. We also hear about the newly launched Beyond Ofsted Inquiry which aims to develop a set of proposals for an alternative approach to school inspection.
