Welcome! Demos' Delights is brought to you by students, tutors, and instructors of "Introduction to Democracy Studies" and "Pengantar Studi Demokrasi." Both are undergraduate courses at the Department of International Relations, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Each podcast is dedicated to giving deeper insights to the various facets of democracy and how they are faring in countries around the world.

    Episode 27 - Pelemahan Kondisi Oposisi di Indonesia di bawah Pemerintahan Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin

    Pemerintahan Indonesia di bawah Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin diwarnai dengan munculnya fenomena koalisi gemuk yang tersusun dari berbagai partai politik yang berbeda. Hal ini berakibat pada melemahnya kondisi dari kubu oposisi, tidak jauh berbeda dari sosok macan ompong. Bagaimanakah dampak dari keberadaan koalisi gemuk yang terlalu overpowering kubu oposisi terhadap melemahnya demokrasi?     Episode 26 - Demos Space: Populisme dan Dekonsolidasi Demokrasi

    Tren populisme dan politik sayap kanan semakin mengancam kondisi demokrasi di berbagai negara, dengan semakin seringnya intimidasi dan pembungkaman yang dilakukan oleh pemerintah terhadap para kritikus dan aktivis serta munculnya peraturan dan undang-undang yang mendiskriminasi kelompok tertentu dan semakin mendekonsolidasi demokrasi. Pada podcast kali ini, Demos' Delight telah menghadirkan ahli-ahli negara India (Trista Larasati N.), Afghanistan (Harsya Kurnia Adha), Hungaria (Wita Katryna A.), AS (M.     Episode 25 - SunJaw : Apa Kabar Demokrasi?

    Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, demokrasi global telah mengalami pergolakan, dimana dalam beberapa negara non demokratis terdapat peningkatan kesadaran dan gerakan terhadap demokrasi, tetapi ada pula negara demokratis yang mengalami penurunan kualitas demokrasi. Untuk itu, Demos’ Delight telah menghadirkan ahli dan pengamat demokrasi dari Slovakia (Faiz Kurniawan), Afrika Selatan (Naufal Rafi R.), Kambodia (Gafirat Wira F), dan Republik Ceko (Aldo Priyo B.A). Bersama dengan Sadad Abshar Al Edris, mereka kemudian akan melaporkan kondisi demokrasi dan kebebasan berpendapat di negaranya, serta mengkaji apakah terdapat pelanggaran terhadap asas demokrasi dan hak asasi manusia dalam pelaksanaannya.     Special Episode! - Siniar Dekonsolidasi Demokrasi dengan Bapak Ihsan Ali Fauzi

    Dalam 14 tahun terakhir, ditemukan bahwa berbagai kondisi demokrasi diberbagai negara telah mengalami penurunan kualitas global, termasuk di Indonesia. Menurut berbagai literatur oleh Huntington, kemunculan demokrasi sering dipandang sebagai sebuah gelombang yang datang secara bertahap dan menimbulkan efek snowballing. Namun, seperti sebuah gelombang, dimana adanya kenaikan pada akan ada pula penurunan. Untuk mengetahui bagaimana gelombang demokratisasi ini berdampak pula terhadap penurunan kualitas demokratisasi, Demos’ Delights telah menghadirkan tamu inspirasional dan terhormat, Bapak Ihsan Ali Fauzi, yang merupakan Direktur Pusat Studi Agama dan Demokrasi.     Episode 24 - Theories of Democratization: Endogenous vs Exogenous

    Economic development and democracy is often intertwined and in the words of Seymour Martin Lipset, “the more well-to-do a nation, the greater the chances that it will sustain democracy”. Thus the discussion today will be emphasizing on the relationship between development and democracy and what are the respective positive and negative correlations between the two. To do so, Dr. Diah Kusumaningrum has chosen two theories, endogenous theory and exogenous theory. She will further explain the empirical and theoretical facets as well.     Episode 23 - Theories of Democratization: Precondition vs Agency

    In learning about democracy, surely there’s a question of how democracy may come about? The phenomenon --known as democratization-- has been the center of many literature research by various scholars, who aim to understand why democratization takes place in different countries. Thus, this podcast  will be dedicated to discussing about the analytical debate between the precondition approach camp -which believes that democratization can be achieved simply by meeting certain preconditions-  and the agency-oriented camp -which states that democratization may happen when there’s strategic interactions between political actors.     Special Episode! - Democracy and Peacebuilding Discussion with Dr. Jose Manuel Ramos Horta

    The worldwide decline of democracy that has been happening in recent years is something that could be defined as a passing phenomenon. History has proven that despite multiple countries experiencing extreme ideologies in the 1960s, democracy almost always managed to return to full power. Those recoveries are often accompanied by various nonviolent resistance and a series of restorative peacebuilding processes. In this special episode, Demos’ Delights, invited a special and honorable guest, Dr. Jose Manuel Ramos Horta, former president of Timor Leste, the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and the current chairperson for the World Movement for Democracy. Moderated by Dr. Diah Kusumaningrum, this discussion will focus on Dr. Jose Manuel Ramos Horta's thoughts on how nonviolent resistance could be used in both bringing and safeguarding democracy, relations between Indonesia and Timor Leste, and on what a restorative justice would look like between the two countries in an ideal world.
