Love Isn’t Enough: A White Mom’s Journey Raising Black Sons

Recorded in mid‑2020—while COVID‑19 kept us apart yet Black Lives Matter protests pulled millions into the streets—this conversation captures the raw urgency, grief, and resolve of that moment. A raw, unfiltered conversation between Neil “Logik” Donaldson and Andrea Page — a white mother of three Black boys who has spent years dismantling her own internalized racism while fighting for her children’s safety, dignity, and joy. 🔑 What we cover How Andrea’s first mentor — a Black youth‑counsellor she met while homeless at 13 — cracked open her worldview. The daily realities of anti‑Black racism in Canadian schools, parks, and neighbourhoods — from slurs on the playground to micro‑aggressions in the classroom. “Love is NOT enough”: why white parents of Black children must do continuous, intentional anti‑racism work. White silence vs. true allyship: practical ways non‑Black listeners can show up right now. Navigating white fragility, defensiveness, and the myth of being “colour‑blind.” Setting firm boundaries so Black children have at least one space that is genuinely safe and validating. Resources, reading lists, and action steps you can start today. 📌 Key takeaways Do the work before (and after) the baby arrives. Biracial kids inherit systemic burdens; parents must prepare, educate, and stay humble. Silence equals complicity. “Your silence is co‑signing the violence.” Speak, share, and interrupt racism even when it feels awkward. Listen > defend. If Black voices tell you something harms them, believe it, apologise, and change. Self‑check never stops. Micro‑aggressions can slip out of anyone; catch them, own them, correct them. Start where you are. Google is free; countless anti‑racism primers, book lists, and podcasts exist. Don’t off‑load the labour onto Black friends who are already exhausted. 🛠 Resources mentioned White Fragility — Robin DiAngelo So You Want to Talk About Race — Ijeoma Oluo How to Be an Antiracist — Ibram X. Kendi Canadian organisations: Stolen From Africa, Black Youth Legacy Hub, Anti‑Racism Educator Network 📣 Get Involved Share this episode with at least one person who needs to hear it. Tony Miller : Owen Sound's Forgotten Black Legacy

Tony Miller comes from a lineage of pioneers who have made significant contributions to Black Canadian History, identity and empowerment and he is here to preserve their forgotten story. We all heard of the underground railroad, the story of enslaved Africans seeking human dignity but who would ever think the underground railroad went as far north as Owen Sound, just under 3 hrs north of Toronto!  Owen Sound is home to the longest running emancipation festival in NORTH AMERICA  established in 1862, that's 159 years ago, literally older than "Canada." This festival by the way, was founded by Tony's great-grandfather!   Tony Miller is an accomplished storyteller, author and a two time cancer survivor who uses visual arts to activate ancestral memory and to facilitate thought provoking conversations on often difficult subject matters. He is currently working on a series called "Potter's Field"   the story of over 2000 unmarked graves (mostly Black refugees that came through the underground railroad) to put faces and names to these stories. He also working on another wordless Novel (images only)  that details the history of Negro Creek (formally called N****r Creek) where over 100 Black Pioneers Lived.
