DNA: ID

We all hear stories almost daily now about cold cases being solved by investigative genetic genealogy. This new crime-solving tool answers the "who" question about these often decades-old crimes... but what about the why? This podcast will look at crimes solved by genetic genealogy, and examine the connection - if any - between the victim and the killer, and why the crime occurred. Each case is unique, and has its own story behind the headline. Join us for DNA: ID. New episodes come out every Monday.

Saad Kawaf Part 1 of 2

Episode 213 Saad Kawaf Part 1 of 2 The May 1999 home invasion robbery and murder of Jacksonville, FL businessman Saad Kawaf was an unusual crime, with two perpetrators and a surviving witness. The leads were plentiful – the survivor saw the killer and his accomplice’s faces; a witness saw the getaway vehicle; and there was DNA.  The investigation into Saad’s financial activities by a task force also provided a promising avenue of investigation, until the leads fizzled and the case went cold.  Twenty years later, when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office authorities used IGG to finally get answers, they were truly shocking, pointing to one of the last people anyone would have suspected. Few cases have outcomes as bleak as this one – but at least, justice was served at long last. Doe ID Michael Ray Schlicht

Episode 212 Doe ID Michael Ray Schlicht In September 1974, the nude body of a young man was found on a fire road in Laguna Hills, CA.  Remaining unidentified, he was buried in a pauper’s grave, his death chalked up to an accident.  But 6 years later, Orange County investigators would begin to notice a pattern of similar cases throughout Southern California, and even in Oregon.  A serial killer was at work, and he would turn out to be one of the most prolific of all time.  Laguna Hills John Doe, now known to be 17 year old Michael Ray Schlicht, is believed to be one of the early victims of Randy Kraft. Michael did not receive justice in a court of law, but at least he has his name back, and his family can honor him for the first time in 50 years.
