This podcast is a discussion about the issues facing local agencies which help feed those in need. The Migrant Ministry is an interfaith effort sponsored by the Catholic Parishes of Oak Park to address the immediate and long term needs of our migrant brothers and sisters. Powered entirely by volunteers, the ministry welcomes asylum seekers living in Chicago shelters and elsewhere on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to select from donated clothing, shoes, coats, blankets, sheets, towels, and toiletries. The ministry also provides breakfast and access to social services, health care, spiritual accompaniment, and immigration support. ESL classes are held once a week. The Migrant Ministry has also resettled 20 households of migrant families and single men, accompanying them and helping them to navigate life in the United States. With us today are: Nick Menninga, Chair of the HWWCROP Walk; Cynthia Mobley from First Baptist Church of Melrose Park Food Pantry and Nick Gliha, Community Engagement Specialist, Church World Service (CWS). Nick Menninga, Chair, speaks about the in person event this year. It has been 3 years since we had an in person walk and it is exciting to here about the teams and events for Sunday, May 1, 2024. This is now a yearly event in which people pledge to eat for one week the same rations that a refugee eats in a camp after fleeing their country.The Ration Challenge will be held from Sunday, June 13 – Saturday, June 19, 2021.
