    Steel wool 2026 - Part 5 AUDIO - Dave Bigler - Hebrews 12:1-2

This is the audio recording of a talk on Hebrews 12:1-2 given at the Steel Wool Men's Retreat by Dave Bigler in October of 2026 at Camp Pinnacle. For more on the retreat visit: https://ironsheep.org/steelwool TEACHING DESCRIPTIONIn this final session of the retreat, Dave Bigler brings the weekend full circle by focusing on the culmination of the passage in Hebrews 12.2: "fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith." Bigler reminds the men that running the individual race God has marked out for them—as uniquely assigned members of one body described in Romans 12.4–6—cannot be sustained through willpower, rigid behavior modification, or self-reliance. Sharing vulnerably from his own past struggle with pornography, he illustrates how fixating on our sin or trying to conquer it in our own strength only leads to failure and entanglement. True transformation happens from the inside out when believers stop focusing on the struggle itself and instead abide deeply in God’s Word and daily communion with Christ. Bigler calls us to "fix our eyes on Jesus" as Hebrews 12:2 instructs us to, in order to run our race.Pointing to Peter stepping out onto the water in Matthew 14.28–31, Bigler emphasizes that the moment we look away from Jesus toward our circumstances, we begin to sink. He anchors the message in the heart of the Gospel: Jesus did not merely design the race from a distance; He ran it Himself, taking on human flesh, enduring the unimaginable shame of the cross, and finishing the work so that He is now seated at the right hand of the Father. The profound truth of the cross is that the "joy set before Him" was the redemption and reunion with us. As the men prepare to return down the mountain to everyday life, Bigler challenges them not to fall back into self-effort, but to fix their gaze steadfastly on Jesus, living each day in the joyful, finished victory of Christ.

    Steel wool 2026 - Part 4 AUDIO - Jeff Stasko - Hebrews 12:1-2

This is the audio recording of a talk on Hebrews 12:1-2 given by Jeff Stasko at the Steel Wool Men's Retreat in October of 2026 at Camp Pinnacle. For more on the retreat visit: https://ironsheep.org/steelwool TEACHING DESCRIPTIONGathered around the evening bonfire, Jeff Stasko brings the retreat's teaching into a moment of collective resolve, reflecting on the weekend's journey through Hebrews 12.01. Building on earlier discussions of the great cloud of witnesses from Hebrews 11, the hindrances that drag us down, and the persistent nature of sin, Stasko zeroes in on the corporate charge: "let us run." He emphasizes that running the Christian life is not an isolated endeavor, inviting the men to join in a tangible act of commitment by casting logs into the fire to symbolically lay down their burdens before God and one another. Unpacking the biblical concept of endurance, he explains that it is not a grim resignation, but a hopeful, cheerful, and unyielding mastery that presses forward despite every obstacle. Stasko challenges listeners to confront what is genuinely holding them back—whether negative words spoken over their identity, deep emotional wounds, or the heavy weight of anxiety. Vulnerably sharing his own struggle with worry over a critically ill friend, he models what it looks like to release control and place painful realities into the hands of Jesus. Pointing to 1 Peter 5.7, he reminds the group that Christ actively cares for their burdens and desires to bring healing and restoration to their souls. Believers are urged to step out in courageous, obedient faith, unburdening their hearts so they can run the specific race God has marked out for them.

    Steel wool 2026 - Part 3 AUDIO - Homer Purdy - Hebrews 12:1

This is the audio recording of a talk given by Homer Purdy on Hebrews 12:1-2 at the Steel Wool Men's Retreat in October of 2026 at Camp Pinnacle. For more on the retreat visit: https://ironsheep.org/steelwool TEACHING DESCRIPTIONIn this third session, Homer Purdy of the Alive Radio Network guides listeners into a deep study of Hebrews 12.01, zeroing in on the phrase "the sin that so easily entangles." Grounding his approach in careful biblical exegesis rather than reading personal bias into the text, Purdy highlights the stark contrast between shedding "every weight" (plural) and casting off "the sin" (singular). Drawing from the broader context of the letter—including passages such as Hebrews 3.12, Hebrews 3.19, and Hebrews 4.02—he explains how the original Jewish Christian audience struggled with the foundational sin of unbelief. Examining the unique Greek word euperistatos, Purdy notes that it paints the picture of something that wraps closely around our feet and legs like seaweed or a vine, skillfully designed to trip us up and halt our race. Moving from biblical observation to personal application, Purdy challenges listeners to let the Holy Spirit uncover the specific, recurring sin that entangles their walk with Christ. Comparing habitual sin to an overwhelming elephant that must be tackled one bite at a time, he urges men to confront their issues with honesty and intentionality. Purdy introduces the practical acronym "HALT" (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) to help believers identify the vulnerable moments and environments where they are most prone to stumble. Ultimately, Purdy reminds listeners that freedom does not come through condemnation, but through the patient, merciful grace of God as they identify their triggers, cast off entanglements, and run their race with endurance.

    Steel wool 2026 - Part 2 AUDIO - Matt Hauser - Hebrews 12:1

This is the audio recording of a talk on Hebrews 12:1-2 given by Matt Hauser at the Steel Wool Men's Retreat in October of 2026 at Camp Pinnacle. For more on the retreat visit: https://ironsheep.org/steelwool TEACHING DESCRIPTIONIn this 2nd teaching of the weekend, Matthew Hauser explores what it means to throw off the weights and hindrances that slow us down in our spiritual walk, (continuing the study in Hebrews 12.01). Drawing a parallel to endurance athletes pushing through the final, grueling miles of an Ironman triathlon, Hauser illustrates how mental exhaustion and worldly falsehoods often paralyze us long before our strength actually gives out. Turning to 1 Samuel 17.20, he examines the story of David and Goliath, focusing not on the famous stone that took out the giant, but on the gauntlet of discouragement, fear, and intimidation David had to overcome just to reach the front lines. While the entire Israelite army stood immobilized for forty days by a nine-foot obstacle, David arrived with a mindset rooted in divine truth rather than worldly fear. Hauser unpacks how David confronted opposition at every turn—from his older brother Eliab’s dismissive insults attempting to label him as "just a shepherd," to King Saul’s doubts and ill-fitting armor that attempted to conform him to conventional methods. Instead of accepting those lies, David recalled God’s faithfulness in delivering him from the lion and the bear, stepping out in confidence that the battle belongs to the Lord. Believers are challenged to examine their own lives, reject the subtle lies of inadequacy that paralyze them, shed the worldly baggage weighing them down, and run their race!

    Steel wool 2026 - Part 1 AUDIO - Dave Bigler - Hebrews 12:1-2

This is the audio recording of a talk on Hebrews 12:1-2 given by Dave Bigler at the Steel Wool Men's Retreat in October of 2026 at Camp Pinnacle. For more on the retreat visit: https://ironsheep.org/steelwool TEACHING DESCRIPTIONIn this message, Dave Bigler (founder Iron Sheep Ministries) kicks off a weekend series centered on Hebrews 12.01–02 by setting up the vital historical and theological context of the Epistle to the Hebrews. Hebrews is written as an encouraging sermon to first-century Jewish believers facing mounting Roman persecution under Emperor Nero. The text urged them not to retreat from their faith. Dave emphasizes that "context always informs meaning," taking listeners back into the "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews 11 to show how ordinary individuals—like Noah, Abraham, and Moses—were used powerfully not because of their own perfection, but because of their enduring faith in God. Transitioning to the call in Hebrews 12.01 to run the race marked out for us, Dave shares a vivid parallel from the finish line of an Ironman triathlon. Just as exhausted athletes are pushed past their limits by the deafening roar of finishers slamming on the barricades, believers are urged to see the "cloud of witnesses" not as spectators watching our performance, but as a testimony of ordinary people (saints) who ran before us and proved that God is faithful. Whether you are currently cruising along in your spiritual life or standing still before a steep uphill climb, this talk challenges you to look to the Bible for testimonies of ordinary people who were used by God to do extraordinary things because of their faith in Him. This talk sets up the remaining 4 for the weekend.

Hebrews 13 Bible Study - Closing Exhortations

In this final study of the Book of Hebrews, the author brings all the rich theology of the letter down to everyday Christian living. After spending twelve chapters showing that Jesus is far superior to the Old Testament sacrificial system, chapter 13 focuses on what a life changed by grace really looks like. Real faith isn't just about correct doctrine or religious routines; it shows up in how we love our brothers and sisters in Christ, welcome strangers, care for those who are suffering, and honor God's design for marriage and purity. It also means resting in God's promises instead of chasing after money, because Jesus Christ never changes—He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The heart of this closing chapter is the call to leave behind dead religion and "go to Him outside the camp". Just as Jesus was taken outside the city gates of Jerusalem to offer His life for our sins, we are called to step away from worldly approval and legalistic systems to follow Him wherever He leads. We don't need animal sacrifices or temple rituals anymore because the Cross of Christ is our altar, and His finished work has fully paid our debt. As we look forward to the eternal city God has prepared for us, our response is to offer a continuous sacrifice of praise, do good, support our pastors, and walk in the peace of the eternal covenant. Hebrews 12:18-29 Bible Study. The Mountain of Fear vs The Mountain of Joy.

In this verse-by-verse Biblical exposition of Hebrews 12.18-29, we arrive at the theological climax of the Epistle to the Hebrews: the ultimate contrast between the Old and New Covenants—Mount Sinai and Mount Zion. Writing to first-century Messianic believers in Rome facing escalating persecution under Emperor Nero, the author addresses the temptation to retreat from Christ into the cultural safety of Judaism. Throughout the book of Hebrews, Christ has been revealed as superior to the prophets, angels, and Moses, serving as the mediator of a better covenant, a better sanctuary, and a better sacrifice. Here, that comparison reaches its dramatic culmination. The author contrasts the terrifying, unapproachable holiness of Mount Sinai—marked by blazing fire, gloom, trumpet blasts, and divine distance—with the joy and open access of Mount Zion: the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and the sprinkled blood of Jesus that speaks a better word than that of Abel's. We are not called back to a system of shadows and trembling fear, but ushered into an unshakable kingdom of grace. In light of such great salvation, how shall we respond? Do not refuse Him who speaks; rather, offer acceptable worship with reverence, thanksgiving, and holy awe.
