#42: Scent in Palliative and End of Life Care with Madeleine Kerkhof

#42: Scent in Palliative and End of Life Care with Madeleine Kerkhof

In this episode, Frauke sits down with Clinical Aromatherapist Madeleine Kerkhof to discuss the role that our sense of smell, and scents, can play in oncology, palliative (incl. dementia and Alzheimer's), and end of life care. Madeleine shares her journey that led to the work that she does now, why she believes integrative care should be the true focus of health care (and not sick care), and why we need to focus on the needs of the individual person as much as possible. Madeleine also shares how she approaches using scent as support for those with dementia and Alzheimer's, and offers some tips as to what you can (safely) do at home to help. This is an important conversation that sheds light on the wonderful ways our sense of smell, and scents, can play an integral role in providing safety, comfort, and calm even in the most difficult circumstances, and most painful moments in life.

Note: please only use essential oils and CO2 extracts on the most vulnerable if you are trained to do so. Essential oils are highly concentrated substances that need to be used with the utmost safety in mind. Thank you.

#41 What Does The Sense Of Smell Mean To You?

#41 What Does The Sense Of Smell Mean To You?

It's the 1 year anniversary of An Aromatic Life! And to mark the occasion, Frauke wants to celebrate our beautiful sense of smell. So, in this New Year episode, she's sharing a synthesis of what various guests have answered to the question "What does the sense of smell mean to you?” You might be surprised to learn that there are a lot of different ways that people connect with their sense of smell. It’s a very complicated sense and we each have our own personal relationship with smelling, depending on where we are on the smell spectrum, and also based on the type of work that we do. Frauke's hope is that you continue to engage with your sense of smell, that you reflect on what it offers you, and most importantly, that you appreciate that you have it, if you do, because it’s a privilege to be able to smell.

#40: Representation, Culture and Identity in Scent with Dana El Masri

#40: Representation, Culture and Identity in Scent with Dana El Masri

In this episode, Frauke sits down with perfumer and interdisciplinary artist Dana El Masri to talk about representation, culture, and identity through the lens of scent. As a Lebanese-Egyptian born in Budapest, raised in Dubai, and working in New York and Montreal, Dana shares her aromatic life journey that led her to ultimately create her brand Jazmin Sarai. She reveals how she uses the brand as a platform to empower her community through representation and collaboration, while also educating her audience on issues of culture and identity. Dana also talks about the "oriental" movement she helped initiate in the fragrance industry, and shares why it's so important to push the industry forward in a modern and mindful way. She shares how her ultimate goal is to swap the euro-centric lens of perfumery with a multi-faceted, multicultural, flourishing universe of narratives where all are represented and where stories, ultimately, are more authentically told. No matter the industry you're in, this episode will open your mind and expand your perspective.

#39: Exploring Australian Sandalwood with Guy Vincent

In this episode, Frauke sits down with the CEO of Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils, Guy Vincent, to talk about the Australian sandalwood industry and much more. Dutjahn is unique in the industry in that it's a Western Australian based sandalwood oil distillation company that is 50% Indigenous-owned. Guy talks in detail about the significance of that partnership and the importance of collaboration for mutual benefit, as well as many other aspects of the sandalwood trade in Australia. But he also shares his scent-filled journey that led him to his current role. Guy reveals that he's always been highly in tune with his sense of smell, having been led by his nose from an early age. He shares scent-filled stories of living in Thailand, Paris, Grasse, England and the U.S. and training as an aromatherapist and perfumer along the way. Guy also gives insights into the role that sandalwood plays in Australian culture, the issue of illegal trade & adulteration, as well as what it takes to conserve and sustainably harvest the wood for its precious essential oil. This is a conversation steeped in reverence for this sacred tree and the Aboriginal people who've served as its steward from the start.

#38: Smelling Wild with Ernesto Collado

#38: Smelling Wild with Ernesto Collado

In this episode, Frauke sits down with perfumer and founder of Bravanariz, Ernesto Collado, to discuss the joy of capturing the smell of the wild landscape of the Catalonia coast in northeast Spain. Ernesto shares what the sense of smell means to him and reveals how his grandfather, a famous perfumer, was an early influence on his love of nature's smells. He describes what it was like to lose his sense of smell and experience phantosmia, and how that experience made him appreciate his sense of smell even more. Ernesto discusses the importance of smelling the world around us and why he's so passionate about recovering what he calls “smelling culture.” He shares why he created his brand Bravanariz ("Brave Nose"), what he aims to communicate with his fragrances, and why he feels we need to be brave enough to smell. Frauke and Ernesto also talk about the element of time, how nature shows us the way, and why we should connect with the inner cycles of each season. This is a passionate and engaging conversation that I promise will motivate you to connect more with your sense of smell.

#37: Reflections on Aromatherapy with Robert Tisserand

#37: Reflections on Aromatherapy with Robert Tisserand

In this episode, Frauke sits down with aromatherapy pioneer and author Robert Tisserand to reflect on 50 years of Aromatherapy. Robert takes us through his life's journey growing up in London, incl. his studies and original career ambitions (you might be surprised!). He shares what got him interested in essential oils, how he ended up writing that now famous book The Art of Aromatherapy, and reveals what Aromatherapy was like in the UK back in the 1970’s (spoiler alert: it’s nothing like it is today). Robert and Frauke also have an honest discussion about what Aromatherapy is today, what’s changed over the years, and what people get really wrong about the field. They discuss the controversial topic of naturals vs. synthetics, debate the quality of essential oils nowadays, as well as share how they create a fragrance.  Robert also shares what he feels is the most interesting research being done on essential oils today. This is a candid and heartwarming conversation that you don't want to miss.

Energetic Healing

I’ve recently been introduced to this podcast and especially loved episode 14, as Krishana, a Himalayan grower, explains with reverence about the spiritual aspects of his favorite plants. I’m sorry he had to stop at 8! I want to support these types of small cooperatives with heart. Small is big indeed.

Katie Price Boateng ,

Yay! A podcast about smells!
