Discipleship: The Way of Jesus | Ep. 203

A healthy church is made up of healthy members. Members of the body, in alignment with the head, are productive and fruitful because they have learned to listen to His will. This only comes by maturity of the members which is why discipleship is so important. We break down three defining marks of a disciple that show up across the Gospels: we follow Jesus, we are taught by Jesus, and we grow over time in real community that becomes family. That means discipleship is more than inspiration or transmission of information. It is submission, practice, and transformation as we learn to hear the Shepherd’s voice and respond with obedience, not comparison or competition. We then connect the dots through Acts and the early church: thousands added, believers continuing steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, breaking bread from house to house, and learning to live as a united people filled with the Holy Spirit. We also spotlight Aquila and Priscilla as a powerful reminder that you don’t need a title to be used by God, because ordinary believers can help others understand “the way” more accurately and strengthen the church through hospitality and truth. This conversation sets a clear foundation for Christian community, spiritual growth, and disciple-making that lasts. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a rating or review. The Demanding Love of God | Ep. 202

What if the most loving thing God can do is refuse to leave us the way we are? We start with a question that sounds simple but cuts deep: what does love look like when you strip away romance, movies, and clichés and let the Bible answer for itself? From 1 John and 2 John, we wrestle with a definition many of us don’t reach for first: love for God looks like keeping His commandments and walking in His word. Then we put a popular church phrase on the table: “God loves you just as you are.” We weigh it against Revelation 3:19, where Jesus says the ones He loves He rebukes and chastens, calling them to be zealous and repent. That opens up a bigger conversation about spiritual discipline, sanctification, and why holiness is not optional if we want to follow Christ. We also step into John 21, where Jesus restores Peter after denial by asking three times, “Do you love me?” and linking love to action: feed my sheep. Hebrews 12 pushes it further by framing correction as proof of sonship, not rejection. And at the center of it all stands the cross, arms wide open, showing the cost of redemption and why Romans 12 calls our response “reasonable.” We close with a practical challenge about hunger and thirst for God, wilderness seasons, and fasting as a detox from idols. If this stirred something in you, share it with a friend, leave a review, and subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next. What does love look like in your life right now? The Blind, the Lame, the Deaf, the Mute and the Dead | Ep. 201

A miracle can restore eyesight, but can it restore trust, humility, and faith? That’s the tension we sit with as Jay walks us through the man born blind in John chapter 9, where the first question isn’t “how did this happen?” but “who’s to blame?” We slow down long enough to hear Jesus’ answer clearly: neither the man nor his parents sinned, but so God’s mighty works would be revealed. That one line challenges how we interpret suffering, closed doors, and the seasons we didn’t choose.  We also talk honestly about God’s sovereignty, the difference between open doors and closed doors, and why timing matters when we’re asking for healing, provision, or breakthrough. The story turns confrontational as neighbors and Pharisees interrogate the healed man, his parents fear being cast out, and the conversation becomes more about rules than wonder. Still, one sentence cuts through all of it: “I was blind, and now I see.” It’s a masterclass in testimony, clarity, and courage when the room doesn’t want to believe you.  From there, we connect the dots to other gospel miracles: the paralytic forgiven before he walks, the mute man delivered, and Lazarus raised so people might believe. The big takeaway is uncomfortable and hopeful at the same time: the greatest miracle isn’t always the natural one. It’s the transformation of a blind, deaf, lame, mute, or dead heart into a heart that sees, hears, walks, speaks faith, and truly knows Jesus. If you’ve been praying for someone you love, we end with language from Ephesians 1 and Isaiah 35 that puts the focus where Jesus puts it: revelation, faith, and salvation.  Subscribe for more Bible teaching and Christian discipleship conversations, share this with a friend who needs a new perspective, and leave a review so more people can find the show. True Communion [circa 2022] (Part 2) | Ep. 200

Jesus says “eat my flesh” and “drink my blood,” and the reaction is immediate: offense, confusion, and people ready to walk away. We slow down and follow his own explanation, that “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life,” then trace how that changes the way we understand communion, discipleship, and spiritual growth. If you’ve ever felt stuck between a literal reading and a deeper hunger for meaning, this conversation is built for you.  We explore bread as a sign that points to taking in Christ’s Word, hearing it, trusting it, and obeying it until it bears fruit in real life. From there we move into light and darkness, showing why refusing the Word is never neutral, and why abiding in Christ is the only way to produce lasting fruit. We also challenge the idea of “church” as a building project, returning to a biblical picture of God’s people being built up by the seed of the Word and shaped by doing the will of God rather than chasing our own glory.  Then we turn to the cup through Leviticus 17 and the claim that the life is in the blood, connecting it with James’ teaching that the body without the spirit is dead. That thread opens up the New Covenant emphasis on the Holy Spirit: the Spirit gives life, the letter kills, and sowing to the Spirit leads to eternal life. We also connect living water in John’s Gospel to the fountain of life promised in the Scriptures, pointing to the gift of God and the promise of the Father.  If this helped you see communion, the Holy Spirit, and obedience with fresh clarity, subscribe, share the podcast with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find it. True Communion [circa 2022] (Part 1) | Ep. 199

“Eat my flesh and drink my blood.” If you’ve ever read John 6 and thought, "What does that even mean?!" You are not alone. Understanding this phrase Jesus used becomes a doorway into communion, the Word of God, and the kind of spiritual discernment Scripture says we must have if we want to truly understand Jesus’ voice. We lean into the Bible’s plain contrast between the natural mind and the Spirit-led mind, using 1 Corinthians to explain why spiritual truth can sound like “foolishness” when we try to process it only through human logic. Then we get practical about the daily war between flesh and spirit, pulling from Galatians 5 and Romans 7 to name the struggle, the stumbles, and the hope: God’s hand still reaches out and says, get up. Our reasoning matters, but it has to submit to the supremacy of God’s Word and God’s will. From there, we build the meaning of communion from the ground up: Deuteronomy 8, manna in the wilderness, and “man shall not live by bread alone.” That foundation leads straight into Jesus as the bread of life, the manifest Word made flesh, and why His shocking language about flesh and blood is calling us to something spiritual, life-giving, and covenant-deep. If you care about Bible study, Christian discipleship, the Lord’s Supper, and learning to hear and obey God’s voice, this is for you. Seasons of Renewal | Ep. 198

Change can feel like loss, but what if it’s actually God’s way of refilling you for the next assignment? We start with a vivid picture of renewal, then move straight into the tension most of us live with: we want spiritual growth, but we also want to stay comfortable. Using Ecclesiastes 3, we talk about seasons and why discernment matters. If we don’t recognize when the season has shifted, we keep acting like yesterday is still the plan, and we end up frustrated, tired, and stuck.  From there, we zoom into God’s rhythms in Scripture, including rest for the land and the Jubilee pattern of return and freedom. We connect that to Jesus’ teaching on pruning and fruit in John 15, and to the warning signs of unbelief in the wilderness. Then we dig into the “new wine” principle from Luke 5: you can’t carry a new work of God with old mindsets, old expectations, or old loves. Real renewal looks like ongoing repentance and the renewing of the mind, not a single emotional moment.  We also look at why revivals ignite and why they often cool down. The common thread isn’t hype or personality; it’s hunger for God. When we stop asking, seeking, and knocking, we drift into a spiritual “eddy” of familiarity while the Spirit keeps moving. We close with a practical way to think about guidance: God doesn’t possess us. He leads us, and we choose to cooperate, especially when we stay close to other believers who keep the fire alive.  If this challenged you, subscribe, share the link with someone who needs renewal, and leave a review so more people can find the show. One Thing that Matters (Part 2) - Ep. 197

Your story is real, but does it get to rewrite what God said? We start with grief and lived experience, then push into a question that gets uncomfortable fast: does my life line up with the Word of God, or have I made myself an exception. When we build beliefs on pain, tradition, or what sounds good, we can end up sincerely convinced and still off course.  We also talk about the “buffet” version of modern Christianity: endless denominations, endless opinions, and a growing habit of choosing what we like instead of testing everything against Scripture. We challenge the popular claim that many paths lead to God and bring it back to the Bible’s insistence on one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. The goal is clarity, not hype, and a faith anchored in truth rather than personality or culture.  Then we walk through what the gospel is and what it means to obey it. Using 1 Corinthians 15, we define the gospel as Jesus Christ crucified, buried, and risen. The big question becomes practical: how do you obey that message? We go straight to the Book of Acts and trace repeated conversion accounts across Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles, and “disciples” who still needed correction, highlighting repentance, baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, and receiving the Holy Spirit as the consistent response pattern.  If this challenged you, share it with someone who cares about getting Scripture right, and subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next. One Thing that Matters (Part 1) - Ep. 196

A single story can hold a lifetime of pressure, and sometimes the most spiritual moment starts on a curb outside an ER. Jay shares his testimony with the kind of honesty that makes the room go quiet: growing up between homes, carrying the weight of divorce, witnessing abuse, and learning early how fear and anger can take root in a kid’s heart. Along the way, he shows how those experiences shaped his view of God, family, and identity, even when he did not yet understand what real conversion is.  We also talk about the surprising impact of Christian school. Bible verses, chapel services, and constant exposure to Scripture built a foundation he did not recognize until later, giving him a deep reverence for the Word and a vivid awareness of heaven and hell. But he also names a hard contradiction: he prayed the sinner’s prayer, responded to altar calls, and still found himself unchanged. That tension leads to the episode’s most challenging claim: “inviting Jesus into your heart” is not the biblical foundation for salvation, and repeating a prayer is not the same as responding to the gospel the way the apostles preached it.  The story tightens as loss piles up: fear for a father’s soul, a stepsister’s death during the AIDS epidemic, and a mother’s fatal heart attack that leaves him with guilt, rage, and questions he cannot dodge. We close by setting the stage for the next teaching and the promised answer to the question he leaves hanging: what is the one thing that matters?  Subscribe, share the episode with someone who needs hope and truth, and leave a review.
