    Ryan Hanson - Special Local Politics Edition

    Ryan Hanson is running for Van City Council for Place 5 Here is links to Ryan's' Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/hansonvantx Below is Ryan's' Introduction: Although I've been very active in the City and on the board, I'm not going to list out my accomplishments.  I've worked hard, but I'm also just one tooth in the sprocket of what drives the City of Van. Civically, most everything the City has done, or subsequently not done, falls back on the entire board and not just an individual.  It's been a team effort and humbling experience to have been part of the growth and prosperity that Van has experienced over the past two years.  As a team, the City has moved Van to a place where they can really start to add and manage growth.  This equates to more City revenue and a better quality of life for it's citizens. Moving forward, I would like to focus on  getting more citizens involved with the City and this can be done through more events and functions.  I would like to see better communication and more student involvement.  Businesses in Van need a larger say in Civic happenings and I have a plan that would see an advisory committee formed that could provide input and consultation to the City.  I'm a driving force when it comes to transparency, accessibility and accountability and I will push harder on all those fronts in the next two years.   Thank you for letting me serve you for the past two years and I look forward to serving you again for another two years.

    Mark Thompson is running for Van City Council for Place 4 Here is links to Mark's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MarkThompsonVanCityCouncil Below is Mark's Introduction: My name is Mark Thompson, and I am running for the open Van City Council Place # 4 seat.  For those of you that may not know me, please allow me to introduce myself.  I’m married to Lori, my wife of 44 years.  We moved here from Central America in 2005 after seven years on the mission field with Mercy Ships.  We have four adult children, all of whom have attended Van ISD.  Our youngest both graduated for Van HS.  We also have four grandchildren living here in Van. I served for four years in the Army, am a civil engineer by education and currently a consultant in business and project management, with a subspecialty in emergency management and planning. Lori and I have been business owners here in Van since just after the tornado in 2015. I have served on the Van Economic Development Corporation Board for the past five years and have been a member of the Van City Master Planning Committee who developed the recently adopted City 2021 Comprehensive (Master) Plan. I have attended the monthly meetings and supported our City Council for the past seven years and do not have a particular challenge with how they have been managing our fair city.  My desires for running for this open City Council seat include the furtherance of progress made since the tornado, helping to further the full development and implementation of the new Comprehensive Plan, and assisting to help ensure our readiness for any future emergency or disaster-related events which may affect our town.  If elected, I will do my best to fully represent the citizens of Van while maintaining the duties and responsibilities of this post to the best of my ability.

Born and raised in Van, my family and I have dedicated our entire lives to serving the people of this town. Since the age of 15, you could find me at the funeral home all hours of the day and night. In addition to being a funeral director at Hilliard Funeral Home, I also manage a perpetual care cemetery and preneed trust. I met my husband of 23 years in typing class at Van High School. My only time away from this city was while I attended college and Brandon served in the U.S. Navy. We both consider these years a great lesson of small-town appreciation. Together, we have three kids, Avery (18), Canon (18), and Foster (15). In my free time, I am almost always at a Vandal event of some kind. I am an animal lover and search for ways to help others; however, I believe in being a silent giver. Not one to ask for a pat on the back or openly boast about anything I have accomplished, the fear of having to "sell myself" to people seemed like an obstacle in making this decision to run. I do believe that anyone who has ever met me can attest to my character and I prefer to rely on my past actions rather than words. For those who do not know me, I am diplomatic in nature and my greatest strength would be my ability to disagree with others respectfully while keeping an open mind. I am curious, levelheaded, and enjoy studying and learning new things. My job requires quick actions under pressure and constant problem solving, all while handling each person with kindness and respect. The people in this town deserve a voice of educated representation. As a whole, we all want progress, while still holding on to our traditions. My desire to become more involved is nothing new, as I serve this community every day. My roots were planted here at birth and the future is extremely important to me since my kids plan to raise their families here as well. I feel my dedication to the people who live here would be an asset to the city council. I look forward to learning and helping the community grow to its potential if you choose me to represent place 4.

I have lived in the city of Van, Texas practically my entire life. I have worked for the Texas Department of Transportation for the last 9 years and currently hold the position of Construction Inspector.  Back in 2015, after the tornados wrecked our city I worked countless hours cleaning up our town alongside many of you. I hold this community very near and dear to my heart and that is why I am wanting to run for seat #4. It is very important to me to see that my hometown correctly fixes and maintains city roadways, drainage ditches, and water lines. As a TXDOT employee, ensuring the safety of the workers and the general public is always the number one goal. That being said, this is also something I want to see in my hometown of Van. Living in small town, Texas the last thing that should be on the community’s mind is the safety of our town. My main goal, if elected, as sitting city council member would be to ensure the safety of our community. This includes but is not limited to the following: city roadways, drainage ditches, water lines, animal control, parks and recreation, law enforcement, fire department, all city employees, and community. This will act as my political platform to keep you all in the loop about what changes I would like to see come to our town. I would very much appreciate your vote come May 7th.

My wife Trish and I have been residents of Van for 14 years and part of the Van ISD Community for 20 plus years.  We raised our 4 kids here and enjoy our grandchildren’s visits. Before moving to Van proper, I lived in Ben Wheeler for a decade, volunteering on the Ben Wheeler Fire Department and serving as the training captain and serving the community.  Being elected to the Van City Council will allow me to continue my dedication and service to our community. I am not a politician, just a concerned citizen and tax payer that wants to represent and serve our city, to keep Van the best city to live and raise a family. The city of Van is here to serve you, not the other way around.  Too often, the objections of the community are not heard, often put aside for special interests and pet projects.  I want to ensure that every citizen is heard, that every complaint is handled efficiently, with respect and courteously.  I will not accept any donations, funding my campaign myself, keeping me accountable to only you, the citizens of Van. As a project manager for a multimillion dollar industrial and architectural company, working on projects for such clients as Lewisville ISD, Frito Lay and Medical City of Dallas, as well as being a small business owner, I bring real world experience and a unique skill set to the city Council.  Now being retired, provides me the luxury of giving the city council and the city of my full dedication and attention. Our infrastructure has long needed repairs and upgrades.  We have new homes being built with an infrastructure that can barely support the current residents.  I plan to work with our city and county to set and obtain upgrade goals to bring our city’s roads and water up to residents’ standards. Van has one neighborhood watch program which I was lucky enough to be included in.  I want to work with the current watch captain and Van PD to implement neighborhood watches in all the neighborhoods in van.  To build on and strengthen our neighbor looking out for neighbor community we have always counted on. I also plan to work to make and keep the actions and decisions of the city council as transparent and professional as possible.  I believe that our elected officials are responsible for much more than the business workings of our city.  They are representatives of our city and our values, leaders in the community.  We should be setting a fine example for our residents, and those outside looking in, not to mention our younger generation, who will be the future leaders of our city. I would be honored to earn your vote.  Together we can and will keep Van the best city to live and raise a family.
