Gaming The System - The Feminist Gaming Podcast

GamingtheSystem

The podcast where 3 intersectional feminists examine gaming and games  through a feminist lens.  New Episodes every Thursday. Alex, Jem and Matt believe gaming is good.  Gaming is good for relaxation, for learning, for bringing people together and for your mental health. But like all media, there is both good and bad and we want to address how we make gaming a safe and healthy environment for women and minority groups (although lets not forget that people of colour are the global ethnic majority). We want to see the small steps towards an intersectional feminist future that have been made in games to go further. We are Gaming the System because we want to see our beloved world of Gaming reflect the values we hold dear, and until it does we are here to shine a light on what needs to change. -----PAYPAL & PATREONIf you want to support us, you can send us a one-off donation via paypal or subscribe monthly to our Patreon. For paypal, send your donation to:wearegamingthesystem@gmail.comFor patreon:patreon.com/gamingthesystem

Dungeon Crawler Carl: When Books Become Video Games (Episode 299)

What happens when literature starts borrowing from video games? And can a book full of XP, skill trees, inventory management, and dungeon crawling actually get more people to read? This week on Gaming The System, Jem, Alex and Matt explore the growing world of LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Games), inspired by the wildly popular Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Featuring an alien apocalypse, a man in his boxer shorts, and a magnificently self-important talking cat called Princess Doughnut, the series blends RPG mechanics with dark humour, social satire, and surprisingly compelling storytelling. But is it genuinely a new way of telling stories, or just a video game you can't actually play? Jem makes the case for Dungeon Crawler Carl, Alex considers its satirical take on gaming culture, and Matt remains spectacularly unconvinced.  Ultimately, though, we all agree that if gaming-inspired fiction might introduce a whole new audience to reading, that's a Good Thing.  What do you think? Have you fallen down the Dungeon Crawler Carl rabbit hole? Do you enjoy game-based books, or would you rather just play them? And should we make Matt read the first book? Stronger Together: Rockstar, Rachel Crawford and the Fight to Unionise (Episode 298)

With GTA VI set to be the biggest game launch ever, we're looking at the people making it. Jem, Alex and Matt celebrate Rachel Crawford, named Games Campaigner of the Year at the Women in Games 2026 awards. She was one of 31 workers Rockstar fired in October 2025 after they talked about unionising in a private Discord. We go through what's happened since, up to the Glasgow tribunal that's running now. We also talk about why organising feels so risky for games workers: jobs are insecure, visas depend on employment, and UK union protections are among the weakest in Europe. There's some hope too, in the newly announced United Wizards of the Coast union. Before all that: what we did (and didn't) buy in the Steam autumn sale, cosy photo-puzzling in TOEM 2, and Matt's heartbreak over Expedition 33 leaving Game Pass. Stick around after the outro to find out what GTA stands for.  #RockstarGames #GTA6 #GameWorkersUnite #IWGB #UnionizeGaming #GamesIndustry #GameDevLayoffs #WomenInGames #RachelCrawford #UnitedWizardsOfTheCoast 📢 Support the Podcast! When Cosy Gamers Get Mad - What happened with Legend of Khimari? (Episode 294)

Legend of Khimari promised an ambitious horse game set in 13th-century Mongolia: an open world built around exploration, survival, horse care and the journey itself. Then came corrupted zones, angry spirits and combat and its Steam reviews dropped from Very Positive to Mixed. Returning guest Georgia joins Alex, Jem and Matt to unpack what happened. Did players reasonably believe they were buying a cosy horse game without combat, or was this always part of the developers' vision? And when a passionate community has backed a game through Kickstarter and followed its development through Early Access, how much say should they have when that vision isn't what they expected? We also get into what makes the horse-game community unusual, the extraordinary level of detail Khimari puts into its horses, why Georgia actually likes the controversial corruption system, and whether trying to make the game bigger and more dramatic risks losing what made people excited about it in the first place. Part 2, up next, will continue the conversation with Kickstarter, Early Access and the complicated relationship between developers and the communities funding their games. #LegendOfKhimari #HorseGames #CozyGames #CosyGames #IndieGames #EarlyAccess #KickstarterGames #GameDevelopment #GamingCommunity #SteamReviews #OpenWorldGames 📢 Support the Podcast!
