Flying has a really big carbon footprint, and Greta Thunberg has quit flying completely because of this...but next week I’m flying to England with my children – in this episode I reflect on this a bit.  今日の記事のLINK: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20200218-climate-change-how-to-cut-your-carbon-emissions-when-flying 関連LINKS: カーボンオフセットとは? https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%AB%E3%83%BC%E3%83%9C%E3%83%B3%E3%82%AA%E3%83%95%E3%82%BB%E3%83%83%E3%83%88 カーボンオフセット大手の会社のオフセット90%は無意味、無効化: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/18/revealed-forest-carbon-offsets-biggest-provider-worthless-verra-aoe ME: Site: http://www.tensaimon.com SNS: tensaimon (Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kusaimon/) CREDITS: Music by Kajiki Sounds: https://freesound.org/people/tensaimon/bookmarks/ TRANSCRIPT: Everything we do, from the food we eat, products we buy to the way we travel, releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and so has an impact on the planet’s climate.   Around 2.4% of global CO2 emissions come from aviation. Together with other gases and the water vapour trails produced by aircraft, the industry is responsible for around 5% of global warming.   only a very small percentage of the world flies frequently   just 3% of the global population take regular flights   A return flight from London to San Francisco emits around 5.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per person – more than twice the emissions produced by a family car in a year,   While improving fuel efficiency is gradually reducing the emissions per passenger, it is not keeping up with the rapid increase in total passenger numbers,   driving with one other person will certainly be better than a plane   Maybe we should use video calls instead of flying to meetings.   There's carbon offsets, however, it is hard to ever be sure an offset will permanently “absorb” the emissions your flight gives out.   Offsetting just can't be a long-term solution

My New Year’s Resolutions (de-stress)

Happy New Year! In today’s episode I’m going to talk about my personal New Year’s Resolutions (basically: improve my stress), and my concrete plan for actually doing them. English Transcript: My New Year's Resolution this year is to: - take some action to reduce my stress.   I basically have two problems that are causing me stress:   1. I think too much about the state of the world 2. I then try to do something about the state of the world, which makes me too busy, I get stressed and frustrated, and my sleep gets bad.   So I'm going to take the following concrete actions:   To stop me thinking too much: 1. I'm going to take at least one full day off a week from reading news or checking SNS. 2. I'm also not going to read any after 5 o'clock (a chime rings in my neighborhood so it'll be easy to know when to stop). 3. Instead of news or SNS I'm going to read books - mostly in Japanese!😁 4. I'm going to do a short meditation (nearly) every day - just sit quietly and concentrate on breathing slowly for about 20 minutes.   To stop me doing too much: 1. I'm going to give up trying to "go viral" on YouTube or tiktok etc) → I'm going to give up any hope of having any direct effect on the direction of Okinawan / Japanese society. 2. Instead I'm going to concentrate on this podcast, and not try to make anything else. 3. I'm going to try to bring my online activity (this podcast) and my job (teaching English conversation and discussion classes at university) closer together: I hope my podcast will improve my students learning. 4. And I hope that by making it available on the internet I will maybe be able to build a small community of listeners.   5. And finally I'm going to try to prioritize surfing more, and go at least once a week (on average) ME: Site: http://www.tensaimon.com SNS: tensaimon (Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kusaimon/) CREDITS: Music by Kajiki Sounds: https://freesound.org/people/tensaimon/bookmarks/
