Sometimes the person was just already Like That™.On Storybrooke Circus, I'll be breaking down Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 19, where Cruella’s past finally comes into focus and somehow only makes her more unsettling. Between animal mind control, deeply concerning childhood behavior, and one of the show’s most aggressively committed villains, the episode raises a bigger question about darkness itself and whether every evil act really needs a tragic justification behind it. Meanwhile, Emma’s descent continues in ways that honestly send me into a full mid-episode rant about how the show absolutely could have explored darker choices for her without compromising the integrity of some of its best characters simply for shock value. Also, because this is still Season 4, Gold continues quietly manipulating everything from the sidelines like the world’s most exhausting chess player.     This was one of those episodes where every deal immediately makes things worse. And it's an episode about betrayal, broken promises, and stolen voices, which feels appropriate considering I barely had one while recording this.On Storybrooke Circus this week, we break down Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 16, where Hook decides the best way to help is to strike a deal with Ursula, which of course goes exactly as well as you’d expect. While Team Emma races to save August from a truly uncomfortable situation, the flashbacks show just how messy things got the first time Hook got involved in Ursula’s life. Meanwhile, Ursula’s story actually gets a surprisingly emotional resolution in the present, Cruella starts side-eyeing everyone, and just when it feels like the episode might settle down, we get a reminder that in this town, even a drawing of a door is somehow not what it seems. As present-day panic threatens to ruin actual strategy, the flashbacks give us teen angst Regina, Maleficent mentorship, and yet another reminder that Once Upon a Time’s version of Sleeping Beauty somehow gets more confusing the longer you think about it. Meanwhile, Gold continues quietly moving pieces into place because of course he does, proving once again that while everyone else is reacting, he’s already halfway through the next plan. Basically: Regina keeps her cool, Emma means well, fairy tale lore gets aggressively complicated, and Rumple remains deeply exhausting. In this episode of Storybrooke Circus, we revisit Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 14 where, apparently, the group strategy is just… lie to Emma and hope it works out. As David and Mary Margaret double down on keeping their secret buried and the Queens of Darkness continue to be exactly as subtle as you’d expect, the episode quickly becomes less about mystery and more about who’s willing to actually be honest. And somehow, in a town full of heroes, Emma ends up being the most grounded, self-aware, and emotionally mature person in the room. Which would be great, if it didn’t also mean she’s the only one dealing with the fallout when everything inevitably starts to unravel.
