EP241: Rebuilding After Grief and Narcissistic Abuse with Julie Barth

In this episode, we welcome Julie Barth for a powerful conversation about loss, caregiving, emotional abuse, survival, and rebuilding life after trauma. JULIE BARTH is a writer, mother of six, trauma survivor, and founder of the Colin James Barth Outreach, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting women-led households in times of crisis. Julie’s memoir, NOTES FROM A BLACKBERRY, is a deeply moving account of love, loss, and resilience, chronicling her journey as a special needs parent while navigating the heartbreaking realities of her first husband’s battle with cancer. Julie discusses the complexities of loss, emotional abuse, and rebuilding life after trauma. With so many women silently enduring these struggles—whether as caregivers, widows, or survivors of toxic relationships—Julie’s story is both deeply personal and yet universally relevant. Your conversation with her will provide your listeners actionable steps they can take toward healing, securing safety and resources, and ultimately reclaiming personal power. For many women, the burden of caregiving, financial instability, or an emotionally abusive relationship can feel isolating and impossible to escape. Julie’s journey—from raising a daughter with a rare genetic disorder to losing her first husband to cancer and then surviving years of financial and emotional abuse in her second marriage—sheds light on the hidden struggles so many endure behind closed doors. Through her nonprofit and her writing, she’s committed to helping women in crisis understand that leaving isn’t just possible—it’s necessary. Julie’s insight offers a compelling discussion about resilience, recognizing red flags, and taking back control of their lives. EP239: Healing Self-Doubt and Overthinking with Betsy Holmberg

Betsy Holmberg, PhD, is an award-winning psychologist and author specializing in overthinking and negative self-talk. She writes for Psychology Today, and has been featured in radio, television, and podcasts. Her first book, Unkind Mind, comes out June 1 by New Harbinger Publications. Before settling into writing and therapy, Betsy ran the global behavioral health service line at McKinsey & Company, a premier consulting firm. She also worked at Harvard and co-authored several peer-reviewed academic journal articles on non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal thoughts. She is trained in Cognitive-Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral therapies and has treated clients of various ages and presentations. Betsy received her doctorate, master's and B.A. in Psychology from Duke University. Does it ever feel like there’s a hypercritical, negative voice inside your head, telling you that you aren’t good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, or worthy of success or love? Negative self-talk is all too common, especially for women. This inner critic originally served an important evolutionary purpose—to ensure survival. The problem is, this voice can be difficult to “switch off,” leading to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. So, how can you move past negative self-talk and start living with confidence? Written by a psychologist and expert in negative thinking, this book shines a light on where your hypercritical inner voice comes from—a deeply rooted survival mechanism in the brain called the default mode network (DMN). Using powerful skills drawn from neuroscience, you’ll learn how to flip the switch on your unkind mind, so you can move past self-critical thoughts, increase self-compassion, and decrease feelings of shame, guilt, regret, and inadequacy. You’ll also discover how to: Stay calm and present in social settings Stop comparing yourself to others Reconnect with your true inner voice—your kind mind Live with courage and authenticity Once you understand where your inner critic comes from, you’ll feel more empowered to tune it out, focus on your true inner voice instead, and get back to living your life with all the courage and confidence needed to thrive. This book will help guide you, step by step. EP237: Healing Sexual Shame and Religious Trauma with Christina Braver

Christina Braver writes steamy, contemporary romance usually set in the Pacific Northwest. Her stories are character driven and feature strong heroes with softer sides, heroines who make it happen, and the guaranteed happily-ever-after we all need. “A little bit nerdy and a little bit dirty”, her books address deeper issues such as women’s sexual health and sex positivity for all. When she isn’t writing, Christina can be found laughing too loudly with friends, sipping wine, or reading. She lives outside Seattle with her data-geek husband and two new adults who mostly don’t mind telling people what Mom writes.
