Five Venoms is probably one of Chang Cheh's better known movies, and was responsible for launching the career of a prolific group of actors known colloquially as the Venom Mob.     Ichi the Killer (2001)

    In episode 9 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be looking at Ichi the Killer (2001). Takashi Miike's ultraviolent interpretation of Hideo Yamamoto's manga has been no stranger to controversy, with critics and audiences split on whether it is brilliant or just nasty. In this episode, the focus will mostly be on the film's portrayal of sexuality. I'll be comparing the way it handles its themes to the manga, as well as taking a look at the bisexual, sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer, Kakihara. Thank you for listening!     Promare (2019)

    In episode 8 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be looking at Promare (2019). Promare is a film full of bustling action, fire, explosions, and gays...?   This episode will be a bit of a look at Studio Trigger in general, but also how the film itself deals with themes of outsiders and oppressed groups.     Midnight Cowboy (1969)

    In episode 7 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be looking at Midnight Cowboy (1969). Widely considered one of the best American films of all time, Midnight Cowboy is iconic. The film shows New York and loneliness and sexuality, all without flinching. At the time of its release, it pushed boundaries and it still remains the only x-rated film to win the best picture Oscar. In this episode, I'll be taking a look at how the film handles sexuality, masculinity, and also some of the behind the scenes drama that makes it so interesting to look at from a gay pov.     The Killer (1989)

    In episode 6 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be looking at The Killer (1989). Like Chang Cheh, John Woo is an important director in HK film history, and although there's no mistaking a John Woo movie for a Chang Cheh movie, the two filmmakers have a few things that connect them. They've worked together, their films generally focus on romanticised ideas of brotherhood and violence, and... they seem kind of gay. Although this episode is focussing on The Killer, I'll also be talking about John Woo in general, his influences, and of course, heroic bloodshed. Thank you for listening!     The New One-Armed Swordsman (1971)

    In episode 5 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be looking at The New One-Armed Swordsman (1971). Finally, a chance to talk about Chang Cheh... The New One-Armed Swordsman, starring David Chiang and Ti Lung, is maybe not one of Chang Cheh's most famous titles, but it is one that has felt like it would be a crime to overlook for this podcast. In this episode, as well as talking about the actual movie, I'll also be looking at Chang Cheh as a whole, his filmmaking aesthetics, his favourite actors, and of course, close male friendships.     In episode 4 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be talking about Ben-Hur (1959). The biggest and most successful film of the time, Ben-Hur is still considered one of the great religious epic movies. However, it is also a film that has become noteworthy for another reason. A gay reason. In this episode, I'll be looking at the relationship between Judah Ben-Hur and his friend turned enemy Messala, the film's interesting production history, and also how audiences have interacted with it, both at the time of its release and more recently. This episode will look at why, among that legacy, The Lion King has some fans (and critics) also talking about whether or not a certain villainous lion could maybe be gay.     Rope (1948)

    In episode 1 of That movie sounds gay, I'll be talking about Rope (1948). Although it's generally not considered to be on the same level as some of Hitchcock's other, more famous works, this episode will cover some of the reasons why I think it's still a very interesting film. Specifically, the gay reasons. This episode will be looking at the relationship between Brandon and Phillip (obviously), but also the relationship between Brandon and Rupert (maybe less obviously?). Also, how this unique film came to be. That means the original play by Patrick Hamilton, Leopold and Loeb, the scriptwriting process, and of course, the Hays Code. Thank you for listening!     That movie sounds gay promo

    Introducing That movie sounds gay, a podcast all about movies that are kind of gay. Or maybe they're not. But they probably are. At least a little. This podcast will be a mix of film review and film history, with fun facts, analysis, and just a little bit of speculation. Episode 1 will be released on Monday, 1st of March, and we will be looking at Rope (1948). Rope is a very interesting film, even besides its gay subtext, and in this episode we will be discussing the relationship between the central characters, but also the production history. For example, how the Hays Code impacted Rope, and other films, being made in the U.S. at the time. Also, what Hitchcock's thoughts on the project were, as well as other cast and crew.
