Drewling Samantics

Drewling Samantics

Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of experience in the industry. Many months ago a combination of boredom, significantly reduced work opportunities (thanks pandemic!) and overactive and under-stimulated imaginations inspired them to create a podcast, and somehow they’re still at it. Join the Drewling Samantics chaps every Sunday (or download and listen later) as they give an entertaining insight into how their industry works - from modelling to voiceover, theatre to film, and television to streamed media, the gents talk about all areas of performance artistry, giving an insider view that is sometimes humorous, often eye-opening or poignant, and at times just downright strange! With regular guest appearances and the odd special ‘on location’ segment, Drewling Samantics brings something unique and fresh to the world of podcasts from two normal blokes, working in a rather abnormal industry.

S15E10 - Lighting Up The World

Lighting Up The World     Tuning in to Drewling Samantics this week provides a chance to shine a light (if you’ll excuse the pun!) on another facet and specialised area of the performance world - stage and show lighting. It is rather ironic that the experts and technicians in one of the most important focal points (forgive that one too!) in a production, and one without which performers would very much be in the dark (ok, enough now), prefer to remain unseen (that was definitely the last one, promise!) In fact, as this week’s guest Vittorio Verta explains, if they are noticed it usually signals something is amiss!   Vittorio is a designer, creator, programmer and operator of lighting for many productions and performers, but that is putting things far too simply as becomes apparent during his visit with Drew and Sam. Permanently in demand, and always busy, Vittorio is currently working on a brand new touring music show with a top artist, and, as of episode release date, is travelling the USA, moving from venue to venue keeping everything running smoothly. And that is just one of a number of productions this quietly brilliant creative is developing - a master of multitasking you might say!   As always Drew and Sam are delighted to chat to another unsung hero of the entertainment industry, no doubt listeners and watchers will enjoy this insight too.     Social Media Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics   Instagram.com/VVLXLighting VVLXLighting.co.uk   RSS Feed https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

S15E09 - You Scratch My Back

You Scratch My Back      An episode about collaboration, brought to you by means of a collaboration! This week Drew and Sam are joined (albeit hiding behind all his fancy technical gear!) by past Drewling Samantics guest Phillip Lee, who, using his talents as a videographer and creator, helps record this latest podcast appearance of the boys at Sam’s flat - a rare but always welcomed in-person meeting for our presenting pair!    Drew and Sam have previously discussed the virtues and pitfalls of working for little or no money in the industry, and they revisit the subject this week to delve further into connected elements of that side of the business. Their conversation sees agreements and differences of opinion regarding passion projects, the promise of exposure, risk for producers and performers alike, and whether those not taking a wage truly ever benefit. It’s a topic that is always likely to be contentious, but it is also a part of the industry that will be ever present, and, no matter where they personally stand, or the views that are taken generically by anyone involved, Drew and Sam acknowledge it will never be easy to navigate.    And, easy or not to deal with, the subject is certainly fascinating, so with thanks to Phil’s expertise making them look better than ever, the chaps deliver another top quality episode on this and provocative and entertaining topic.      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S15E08 - Tommy, To You

Tommy, To You    This season of Drewling Samantics may have passed the half way mark, but the boys are certainly not delivering any half measures with their latest guest - the enormously entertaining and fabulously funny, Tommy Murray.   He may spend a great deal of his time clowning around and playing for laughs, but when it comes to his work Tommy is nothing but serious. Taking inspiration from such performers as Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and some more modern funny-men (kudos to anyone who spotted the hint in the episode title!), Tommy is a skilled and experienced clown and physical comedian, as well as a seasoned stage performer and coach. His art has taken him around the world, both teaching and performing, and Tommy has also produced and written shows, including most recently working with comedy troop back home, who are creating and performing sketches that will premiere at some up-coming London shows.  Tommy’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious, and he enjoys regaling stories of his life in clowning and performing almost as much as we all love hearing them. So what are you waiting for?! Get comfy, and find out more about Tommy as he chats to Drew and Sam, now!     Social Media Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/FoolsTalkTheatre Instagram.com/Tommy.Murray1   RSS Feed https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss  Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S15E07 - High Five

High Five      Whether you’re a regular listener, a sporadic viewer, a past guest, or a relative newcomer, you may not realise that this has been a rather momentous week for Drewling Samantics - the show is five years old! That’s right, for half a decade Drew and Sam have been delighting (or disappointing, depending on your point of view - although if you’ve come back for more, it certainly can’t be the latter!) visitors to their podcast, and they couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved!    What started as a lockdown pressure release and grumble outlet, has become an extremely important, significant and positive part of their professional and personal lives. Brought to the world from Drew’s ‘sofa of dreams’ and Sam’s tech-savvy studio, as well as sporadic transmissions from various digs and venues around the country, Drewling Samantics has grown exponentially, and now holds a fond place in the hearts of many podcast listeners and YouTube viewers - far exceeding anyone’s expectations or indeed intentions. Did our chaps expect to be broadcasting for this long? Probably not, but then not everything can be planned or predicted, which is certainly true in an industry as unpredictable as the entertainment business.    Beyond reflecting on the past five years of creating content, today the lads also discuss planning in general when it comes to the world of performance. But have either of them set goals or attempted to formulate a plan - five year or otherwise? You’ll have to join Drew and Sam now to find out, as they chat about their personal approach to work, past present, and future.    Well well well - five years and going strong, who’d have thunk it?! Safe to say we’re all glad they’re still about though, and mirror the big thanks the gents give to everyone that has made, and continues to make, Drewling Samantics such an undoubted success.      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@drewlingsamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S15E06 - Proud to Present

Proud to Present      ‘Inspiring’ is a word that’s often overused, but in the case of this week’s Drewling Samantics guest, it is not only accurate, but well and truly deserved.    Christophe Philipps has taken a professional journey as a musician, actor and presenter that has been as much shaped and determined by powerful personal circumstances, as it has his talent. He speaks of his experiences eloquently and with a beguiling simplicity and honesty that one cannot help but be moved by; but perhaps more impressive and moving still, is his outlook on life and work, and what he gives back through teaching and mentoring.    Along with being a fabulous actor and renowned public speaker and MC/event host, Christophe is also a fellow podcaster, and, like Drew and Sam, enjoys recording regular episodes with his long-time friend turned presenting partner. He and Pete Mason, another fantastic podcaster, co-host “Minus the Hangover”, a show all about the ever growing market for, and enjoyment of, low and no alcohol beverages, and the Drewling Samantics boys highly recommend you tune in - they’re both genuine listeners themselves!    But before you veer off and enjoy another top podcast, tune in to this latest Drewling Samantics guest episode to be inspired by Christophe Philipps; safe to say it’s likely to brighten any dark day.      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@drewlingsamantics    EventMC.uk  MinusTheHangover.com    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

S15E05 - The Chicken or the Egg

The Chicken or the Egg      Film? Book? Play? TV? No, despite how it may appear, Drew and Sam aren’t playing charades on Drewling Samantics this week; however there are some questions to be asked, and they’re certainly doing their best to make sure they answer them!    Many of us will have watched a production on stage or screen, and wondered where the idea first came from. Equally, reading a book often generates the thought that the subject matter would make a great film. But do we ever actually delve further into things and find out the origins of creations we’ve enjoyed? Or if certain stories have spanned multiple formats? Well in today’s episode the boys do exactly that!    Discussing some of their favourite productions, our podcasting pair take a deep dive into their origins - from the most prolific contributors, to the ideas that spawned massive franchises, this is a light hearted and fascinating look at what does (or doesn’t!) make a for great product. And with examples of books that have been made into films, movies that inspired musicals, plays that are based on real-life events, and almost every other combination you can imagine, this episode certainly covers the lot!    So it may not be quite as scientific as the chicken and egg debate, but to find out “which came first” in regards to some very familiar films, novels and stage shows, why not join the chaps now - even if it’s for no other reason than to confirm that occasionally Drew and Sam are capable of doing a little research!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@drewlingsamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S15E04 - Pulling the Strings

Pulling the Strings      The Drewling Samantics boys welcome a guest with magic in her hands this week, the wonderful Kim Scopes, whose talent is bringing seemingly inanimate objects to life, to delight and entertain. Kim is a highly skilled puppeteer and theatre creative, working in numerous areas of performance from TV to commercials and theatre to immersive events. She trained as an actor but, as she explains to Drew and Sam, Kim discovered an ability and natural aptitude for puppetry which she seized with both hands (if you’ll excuse the pun!)    Wearing the title of puppeteer with pride and passion, Kim has taken her ability, and in turn the puppets she has animated, into new realms. As well as working on screen and at events, she is also a regular cabaret performer, writing and creating solo shows to delight audiences of all kinds. And beyond the solo element of her work, Kim also explains the dedication and team work that the art often demands, both physically and mentally, in order to create the wonderful illusion of life.  Kim is as charming and delightful as her creations, and with boundless energy and an infectious feeling for fun, she is a fantastic guest bringing insight and enthusiasm to this week’s episode. S15E03 - The Big O

The Big O      Another year comes around, another awards season swings in to action, and it’s another year where Drew and Sam have been passed over for glory. Are they disappointed? Well, maybe just a little, but certainly not enough to stop them seizing the opportunity to mull over the nominations and potential winners! It may not be one of the boys that ends up with a lovely shiny statue on their mantelpiece this time, but on today’s show the chaps discuss some very excited and nervous people, who will no doubt have their fingers tightly crossed!    Yes it’s another fun show today, with highly encouraged “audience participation”, as the Drewling Samantics lads consider the Oscar nominees, and (after much contemplation, deliberation, examination and, well, guess work!) they make their predictions for who and what will take home the gold! From the reasons for nominations and potential victories, to debating the benefits from ‘the nod’ and the sought after win, our dynamic duo consider everything that goes into, and occurs due to these occasions - after all, Actors’ careers are enhanced, and studios sell more films as a result, right...?    Join Drew and Sam now to enjoy a humorous and interesting take on the upcoming awards, and perhaps suggest your own predictions, as the boys promise to revisit and review just how well they, and maybe others, have done, once all has been revealed!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@drewlingsamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!
