    Jiggers’s Place – The WAY to WOW Shows Books, Life & Cocktails**Not necessarily in that order. A good reputation is not quite the same thing as being good. Over The Fair Exchange cocktail, I talk about William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair, from Becky Sharp's ambition to Amelia Sedley's devotion. The conversation considers money, social standing, and the stories people tell themselves, asking what decency looks like in a world impressed by appearances. Spoiler-light; no need to have finished the book. The Fair ExchangeOriginal modern cocktail inspired by the episode; not a historical recipe. Use kosher-certified brandy, fino and orange liqueur. Ingredients• 1½ US fl oz kosher-certified brandy or Cognac (45 mL, rounded)• ¾ US fl oz kosher-certified fino sherry (22 mL, rounded)• ½ US fl oz kosher-certified orange liqueur (15 mL, rounded)• ½ US fl oz fresh lemon juice (15 mL, rounded)• ¼ US fl oz 1:1 simple syrup, prepared by weight (7 mL, rounded)• 1 orange peel strip, approximately 2 × 1 inches, for garnish• Ice: approximately 1 cup for shaking• Glass: chilled 6-ounce coupe Method1. Simple syrup: dissolve 50 g sugar in 50 g warm water, then cool. This makes more than one serving; measure only ¼ oz into the drink.2. Chill the coupe. Measure the liquids and prepare the orange peel before going live.3. Add the kosher-certified brandy, fino sherry and orange liqueur, lemon juice and simple syrup to a shaker with approximately 1 cup of ice.4. Shake until cold, approximately 12–15 seconds. Double-strain into the chilled coupe, without serving ice.5. Express the orange peel over the drink and garnish. While making The Decent Standard bourbon cocktail, I explore the difference between esteem, trust, and basic decency, with practical ways to set firm boundaries without unnecessary cruelty or humiliation. The Decent StandardIngredients2 oz bourbon¾ oz fresh lemon juice½ oz honey syrup (1:1 honey and warm water)¼ oz ginger syrup2 dashes Angostura bitters1½ oz chilled club sodaLemon peel PreparationAdd the bourbon, lemon juice, honey syrup, ginger syrup, and bitters to a shaker with ice.Shake for about 10–12 seconds. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass or short highball.Top with the club soda and stir gently.Express a lemon peel over the drink and use it as the garnish.
