With Folded Hands - Golden Era Radio Sci-Fi

This week on The Shiver Show, we have “With Folded Hands,” a classic 1950 episode of Dimension X. Discover a science-fiction story that is 76 years old and yet feels surprisingly contemporary. Written by science-fiction pioneer, Jack Williamson, and adapted for radio by John Dockill, the story poses a simple question: what happens when robots take all work away from humans?  The Mechanicals (robots) have arrived to serve humanity. They are tireless, efficient, and completely devoted to our welfare. But there may be a darker side to all that helpfulness. Instead of freeing humanity, automation has left people increasingly frustrated, constrained and strangely purposeless - and the Mechanicals have strong opinions about how humans should live. Featuring a terrific cast including Alexander Scourby as Mechanical, Peter Capell as Sledge, Philip Bourneuf as Underhill and Byrna Rayburn as Aurora, the production creates a chilling vision of a future.  So, are the Mechanicals really here to help us? Tune in and decide for yourself. Thank you for listening!   If you like the show, please share us with your friends and family AND give us a review! The Embassy - Old Time Radio Sci-Fi

Forget geopolitics—because Earth is about to be invaded. This week on The Shiver Show, our featured drama is “The Embassy,” a thought-provoking episode from the terrifc Dimension X series (1955). Based on an original story by pioneering science fiction writer Donald A. Wollheim, and expertly adapted for radio by George Lefferts, The Embassy blends detective mystery with classic 1950s science fiction. What begins as an investigation for a strange client, gradually unfolds into something far more unsettling, as the clues point to an extraordinary threat from beyond our world. The performances by Joseph Julian and Barry Kroeger help ground the increasingly fantastic premise, delivering believable characters caught in an unbelievable situation.  Mary and Greg also explore how The Embassy reflects the anxieties of the Cold War era - espionage, infiltration, and the fear that enemies might be hiding in plain sight. They tackle one of the episode's most important questions: Would you accept a cup of tea from a sweet little old lady? Join us!
