In the year 2003, Sufjan Stevens began the 50 States Project: a series of folk songs immortalizing each state, but, like a god that has retreated from his creation in horror, he left many of the states confused and hurt, with no quirky millenial to sing about their own b******t middle of nowhere towns. The Album Concept Hour: Side B is attempting to finish what Sufjan started with their own Fifty States PODJECT, scouring the music world for more albums that bear the names of states.     Though we could end our quest with Sufjan's true heir, Joey Clift, and his completion of the fifty states project, we shall push on with obscure state specific music! Today, we have an album that doesn't talk much about it's state in the Sufjan sense, but definitely feels like the state. We're of course talking about the short lived shoegaze band Drop Nineteens and their surprisingly influential "Delaware".     Fifty States PODJECT: Our Fifty States Project by Joey Clift (w/ Joey Clift!)

    Today we're talking to the true heir to the Sufjan throne. It was said in 2003 that there would be an album for every state, and the neo-folk man himself, Sufjan said he would forge them. After nearly two decades, we had lost hope that they would ever be completed. Sure there were a few albums here and there harkening to the project, but incomplete it remained. Incomplete, that it, until the pandemic struck and fate chose LA comedy writer Joey Clift to not only finish the project, but redo the states already covered by Sufjan. And he did it in mere months. On this episode you will hear us talk to the legend himself as we pick our top 15 for the Our Fifty States Project, and ask him how he managed to pull all this off.     Fifty States PODJECT: North & South Dakota from Joey Clift's "Our Fifty States Project"

    Sufjan left a lot of Americans high and dry when he stopped his Fifty States Project... There were some that independently made their own state albums, some that sought out pre-existing state albums, but there was one that sought to fully right Sufjan's transgression by doing what Sufjan couldn't: complete The Fifty States Project. His name is Joey Clift. When the pandemic got into full swing and people were reaching full on cabin fever, Clift, who is an LA comedy writer put the word out to all of his funny friends and some strangers online to help him finally make an album for each state. The result is "Out Fifty States Project" a collection of songs with a little bit Sufjan, a lot of hilarious, and a ton of corn. And what better states to dip our toes into it with, than two states that are definitely not flyover mystery states that are hard to write about: North & South Dakota...     Fifty States PODJECT: Colorado by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

    Neil Young, folk man at a ripe old age of 75, has decided to throw his hat in the running for the 50 states project. Coming out a little over a year ago, "Colorado" is state he's chosen to contribute to this list, and he enlisted the help of his old pals Crazy Horse. Taking only 11 days to record this on a mountaintop, I can only think they had Sufjan's vision in mind as they embarked on this journey... That, or he wanted an excuse to hang with the guys.     Fifty States PODJECT: Kentucky by Panopticon

    Well, Sufjan really disappointed us on this one. We thought we had another 49 albums of states with him but... whatever. What we managed to find this week is... pretty close to the style that Sufjan Stevens plays, just with a bit of... black metal. Today, we're discussing Panopticon's Kentucky, which, much like Michigan, was largely composed and recorded by one person, Austin Lunn, the Sufjan Stevens of the metal community, and digs deep into Kentucky's tragic roots as coal mining country.
