Christ Came Once, and He Will Come Again

Hebrews 9:23–28 reminds us that Jesus did what no earthly priest could ever accomplish. In the Old Testament, priests repeatedly entered the earthly sanctuary with sacrifices, because sin required continual atonement. But Jesus offered Himself once and for all. He did not enter an earthly sanctuary made by human hands; He entered the presence of God on our behalf. This means we do not have to live constantly wondering whether our sins are enough to keep us away from God. Christ has already paid the price. His sacrifice was complete, sufficient, and powerful enough to deal with sin once and for all. When we fail, we can come back to God—not because we are perfect, but because Jesus has made a way for us. But the passage also points us forward. Verse 28 says that Christ will appear a second time, not to deal with sin again, because that work has already been finished, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. This gives us a powerful challenge: Are we ready for His return? Jesus came once as the sacrifice for sin, and He will come again as the fulfillment of our hope. Therefore, we should not waste our lives living carelessly or being consumed by temporary things. We should live with faith, holiness, expectation, and confidence. The cross tells us that our salvation has been purchased; His return reminds us that our story is not finished. Christ came for us, Christ died for us, Christ rose for us—and Christ is coming again.
