Proclaiming "Artist" Podcast

The Proclaiming Artist Podcast addresses Artistic Fraud Syndrome. In each episode a range of individuals who do or do not consider themselves to be artists will be interviewed. In Part 1, questions like, "Are you an artist? Why or why not?" and "What does an artist look like?" are addressed. Part 2, will have a Creative Collaborative Consultation discussing their next project's timeline, ideas, and resources. In Part 3, individuals will come back after their project is finished and discuss their process as well as any mental or emotional barriers that they had to overcome.

    Kylie Finlinson - Dancer

    Kylie is an artist, dancer, and writer. She began classical ballet training when she was 7 and performed both ballet and modern dance for over 17 years. She now teaches movement classes and enjoys connecting the community and nature. “Art helps to waken up the images inside of yourself, and as those images start to surface, I find art is really helpful to interact with and be intimate with those images, to better understand yourself in the world and not only the self but to understand other selves and other experiences...An artist takes things full circle…you have an experience… and I see the work of the artist taking that raw material of life and working with it. Being intimate with it, getting to understand it, feel it, see it, hear it, and know it. And from that knowing, you start to create a new form, something else to be able to understand things a little bit more.” - Kylie Finlinson

    Meg Bird Mulvey - Poet

    Meg is a poet, writer, and musician from Utah. In this episode, she discusses her journey of embracing the term "artist" and how doing Inner Child work and Julia Cameron's workbook "The Artist's Way," her life completely changed.  "For years, I did affirmations, and it's funny because the truth I learned from affirmations is nobody can actually give you a compliment or a gift that you haven't already given yourself. Even if they try, you won't receive it….everything is YOU when it comes down to it…even if someone had told me 'you're an artist, you're a creative' I wouldn't have been able to receive it because I didn't believe it." - Meg Bird Mulvey

    Meg Ford - Collage

    Meg is a collage artist living in Utah, originally from Colorado. She has been collaging for the past four years and loves using vintage National Geographic and LIFE magazines. Themes of architecture, color, clothing, nature and people that are aesthetically pleasing to Meg are featured in her work. Influenced by the chaos and also the simplicity of life and the world, Meg's collages are an intriguing and charming way to view life on a page. “My definition of an artist is somebody who creates, and so by that definition, I AM an artist. But there is still something just so wrong about saying that. But hopefully, soon I can just own it…” - Meg Ford

    Brianna Martinez - Art Educator

    Brianna is an elementary school art educator, teaching kindergarten through sixth grade. She says that she "doodles." She has convinced her students that she is equal parts mermaid and elf. She teaches her kids to create every day, always look for something beautiful, be moved by art, and how to identify different aspects within art. She aims to cultivate creativity and wants them to remember how important it is to make art. "I would say an artist to me is someone who holds space for themself to do art...maybe owning the term is hard, but feeling it is easy. Because you can feel like an artist but not feel like you can own the term "artist"…I think allowing yourself to create is a big deal because even if you don't feel like you're good enough or if you don't call yourself an artist it's still important to somewhat make something even if it sucks. Allowing yourself to create art and give yourself that time…and space even if you don't think you should is super important." - Brianna Martinez

    Bianca Ley - Photographer

    Bianca is a photographer, writer, and musician. She moved to Utah from Tennessee and began taking photographs of landscapes as she began to travel. She now concentrates on fine art portraiture of women. “I think [the term] “artist” means expression… whatever avenue or medium that you pursue as long as you’re being expressive from within…that passion and that love for that medium will shine through and I think as long as you are doing that and you’re really cutting down to your core, you are an artist. People can sense that from your specific type of work.” - Bianca Ley

    Rafael Arcila - Chef

    Rafael is currently the Sous Chef at Block Restaurant but was the Chef at Pizzeria 712. His favorite thing to cook is his sourdough bread and andouille sausage. He addresses the VERY important question of--"What is a sandwich?" “If I make food that I care about, that I appreciate and create an environment that I put a part of myself into then I want people that I can appreciate and like being on the other end of that...” - Rafael Arcila

    Christian Degn - Pen & Ink

    Christian works with pen and ink and is inspired by prints and lithographs. He discusses his journey of addressing labels and the term "artist."  “I think that [being an artist] is just someone living artfully. You talked about earlier, expressing yourself through the way you arrange your space, how you wear your clothing…. Yeah, this is something that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Can someone be an artist by being the audience? Cause that’s what I’m doing when I want to go do a landscape drawing, I have to go be an audience to a landscape, I mean, that’s the art. Because, I mean, my thing is taking that and putting it through the coffee filter of my consciousness trying to put it onto a piece of paper and trying desperately to be like, ‘please understand that these marks of ink are a tree.’ So I think on that level everyone is being an artist by being an audience to their own life. If they’re being present with their experience, everyone is being an artist all the time. I guess, living artfully is just living consciously. Knowing how you feel and reacting honestly. The world is a stage and we’re all characters and we’re all participating and we don’t have an option really. Either you wake up and are making art, or you wake up and pretending that you’re not…but you are.”  - Christian Degn

    Chloe Fischer - Fashion Designer

    Chloe, studied Fashion Design in Berlin and just moved back home to Utah. She has recently started "Seams Collective" which is a project where she teaches basic pattern making and how to alter and tailor clothing to your own body measurements.  “I think that people are starting to learn more about the words that they’re using in all aspects of culture and life. I think that we are really thoughtful because I think we have the space to be thoughtful and it’s important because this is how art history happens…Yeah, I guess, in some sense of the word I am an artist. But that’s just maybe not the term I feel most comfortable with. ‘Designer’ would be more comfortable. But it’s still not the best term. ‘Creator’ is almost there, still not great. So you know I’m more like ‘I don’t know, I’m Chloe and I do this.’ I don’t have a title yet, I don’t know what to call it. I think we’re all working on it though…I think it’s really good. I think that’s how we make progress.” - Chloe Fischer

    Kathleen Frewin - Musician

    Kathleen Frewin is a singer/songwriter from Utah, she's a little bit country, a little bit bluesy, and a little bit rock n' roll. In this interview she shares her journey on when she started owning the term 'musician' and 'artist.'  “There’s no standard of what is allowed to be successful or moving for someone. Even if you’ve been writing songs for two months, or twenty years, you can still write a song that moves someone. There’s no timeline and there’s no skill level demanded to be reached to be able to call yourself an artist.” - Kathleen Frewin
