    Shakespeare Saturday | Love's Labour's Lost

    Welcome back to Shakespeare Saturday!  Connecting modern hearts to timeless stories.  Hosted by myself and Sarah Spring 🎭 This week we look at one of the Bard’s least performed and most underrated comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost.  Believed to have been written between 1588-1597 the play transports us to Navarre, where a young King, along with his three friends (Ferdinand ((The King)), Berowne, Longaville and Dumaine), take an oath, that for the next three years they will not fall into the temptation of women and will commit their time to studying and fasting.  However, their pact is quickly put to the test as the Princess of France (played by Sarah at the Edinburgh Fringe recently) arrives on a state visit with her three maids of honour (Rosalind, Maria and Katherine). Quickly, the men realise they cannot stick to their oath and fall deeply in love with the Princess and her three counterparts, abandoning their studies and fasts falling into temptation! The play is a commentary on when it comes to choosing between a life of academic excellence and human desire, there is only going to be one winner. Human nature.  As well as, the gender dynamics between the characters, as the women with their superior intellect and maturity run rings around the lovesick men. Showing that a life committed to something you think you should have is meaningless, when all you need is love. Not to mention, that to win a woman’s love, you have to fix yourself first.  Regarded as the lightest, frothiest comedy with a sharp twist at its conclusion, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a beautiful piece, with many hidden gems, that tell us to be ourselves and not what the world wants us to be.  Stay tuned for more geek out sessions on Shakespeare Saturday, and until next time, keep finding the magic in your own life!     Fringe in Fifteen | Eliza Allen | "10A: The Fitting Room"

    Hello guys and welcome back to another Fringe in Fifteen! A series dedicated to fringe artists across the UK and beyond, giving them a fifteen minute elevator pitch style interview promoting what their show is about and where people can see it.  Today we welcome along Eliza Allen and her show “10A: The Fitting Room”, live at the Edinburgh Fringe (at the Tonic, The Caves and The Spare Room) until 30th August and then at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden on 11th and 12th September.  The show is about ‘Liz’ who “defines herself as a raging feminist. Somewhere between fitting first bras and nursing bras, she ends up in an abusive relationship. The lingerie fitting room is an exclusively female space, and through meeting and helping other women, Liz redefines her iden-titty.  It redefines womanhood, domestic abuse, and challenges the idea of feminism in a world where the term is frequently used but seldom defined. Tonally, it's like 'Fleabag' and 'Prima Facie' had an Australian baby swaddled in lingerie.  This is an original piece, debuting at Edinburgh Fringe. It is based on the writer and performer’s personal story. Eliza Allen was a bra fitter for eight years, and this play is inspired by real events and people she met and worked with.” (Quote from official blurb of the show).     Tyrone Huntley on Life in Musical Theatre: Memphis the Musical, Book of Mormon and Jesus Christ Superstar

    Tyrone trained at Mountview in musical theatre and has worked extensively since graduating.  His credits include: Gator, Memphis the Musical, LondonLanx, Angel City, Edinburgh FringeGenie, Aladdin, King’s Lynn Corn ExchangeDoctor, Book of Mormon, Prince of Wales Theatre, West End - for which he received a Broadway World NominationSeaweed, Hairspray, Curve LeicesterJudas, Jesus Christ Superstar, Regents Park Open Air Theatre White, DreamGirls, Savoy TheatreHim, Angry, Southwark Playhouse, Offie NominationThe Academy of Homos or Everyone in America, Finborough Theatre, where he received his second Broadway World nomination.  On top of all this, he won the Emerging Talent Award at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, 2016, as well as the Mousetrap Best Actor Award for Judas in JCS.  For the same show, he got two further nominations, Best Actor in A Musical, Olivier’s 2017, and Best Supporting Actor in a musical, WhatsOnStage, 2017.  We discuss his journey into musical theatre, training at Mountview and his work in three of the biggest shows in the canon.     Fringe in Fifteen | Matt Ackermann | TAP OUT! (or I'll hit you again)

    Hello guys and welcome back to another Fringe in Fifteen! A series dedicated to fringe artists across the UK and beyond, giving them a fifteen minute elevator pitch style interview promoting what their show is about and where people can see it.  Today we welcome Matt Ackermann and his show “TAP OUT! (Or I’ll hit you again) at the Edinburgh Fringe until 31st August. Catch it at the Gilded Balloon in “The Coorie” every night at 6:20pm.  The show follows a man “realising that his life is going nowhere, a man decides to go out in a mask and pick fights with random people on the street. He knows it’s reckless and amoral, but he doesn’t care - it’s liberating. He feels like a “man”. And as he gets a taste for it, the consequences of these bouts come back soon to bite him.” The play is an examination of identity, purpose and male loneliness.     Joel Harper-Jackson on Playing Frank Sinatra

    Joel trained at The Hammond and has been part of some of the most well-known shows to date.  Including one very recently you might be aware of. His credits include: Rent, UK TourWest End Women, UK TourEvita, Ljubljana Festival, SloveniaSimon, Jesus Christ Superstar, Regents Park Open Air TheatreCurious Incident of the Dog in the Nigh time, UK TourKinky Boots, UK TourCock, Ambassadors Theatre with Jonathan Bailey, replacing Taron Egerton after he stepped away from the project.  You can catch him right now in London at the Aldwych Theatre in “Sinatra” where he plays the man himself, Frank Sinatra, doing it his way (pun intended).  We discuss his introduction to the business as well as playing one of the most famous singers on the planet.  The show takes us through the highs and lows of Sinatra’s life, his romance with Ava Gardener which threatened to derail his career and how his comeback is regarded as one of the greatest of all time.  In addition, how he auditioned for the part, working with Frank’s daughter Tina Sinatra and bringing all time classics such as “Fly Me To The Moon”, “That’s Life” and “My Way” to life every night.  Tickets available now!     Danielle Manson on Being the Legal Consultant on Prima Facie and Inter Alia

    Danielle is a barrister at Matrix chambers and has been involved in cases involving serious crime, protest law, inquests and inquiries.  Bringing empathy and sensitivity to the table, especially during instances regarding children and young people, she thrives in bringing cases like these to justice.  She holds an LLB (Bachelor of Law) degree from Sheffield University and completed her BPTC (Bar Professional Training Course) at the University of Law, Bloomsbury.  Prior to her training, she worked at the law reform charity “JUSTICE” as a criminal justice policy intern, whose research helped to get compensation for a case of miscarriage of justice at the Supreme Court.  While studying she also managed the “Innocence Project”, which worked on a range of criminal appeals and applications to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). In recognition of her services she was nominated for the Chancellor’s Medal and was additionally invited to sit on the CCRC’s stakeholder forum.  She spent some time in 2023 working as a sexual violence lawyer for the Centre of Women’s Justice. Advising survivors accessing the Women and Girls Network Survivors Gateway about their legal rights when the police asked for their digital data as part of an Operation Soteria Pilot Scheme.  Her work has been used for Netflix’s documentary “When Missing Turns to Murder”, and she has also been a legal consultant on Suzie Miller’s trailblazing plays, “Prima Facie” and “Inter Alia”.  Providing the cast and creative team with the current state of the law when it deals with sexual assault cases against women from both the side of the victim and perpetrator.  We discuss the areas of the law, tackled by both plays, that still to this very day are not helping victims of sexual assault get the justice they need.
