8: Episode 8 - Atlanta Cook

Marine environment consultant and honourary life member of Surfers Against Sewage, Atlanta Cook talks sewage, plastics and fatbergs - and what we can do to help. Hayley and Kirsten reflect on what we can do day-to-day to live more ethically and support the environment - in a way that adds more meaning and joy to life. Atlanta Cook started her marine conservation adventure in 1991 helping organise Surfers Against Sewage's first Brighton photo shoot and fund-raiser. She was an SAS Brighton Media Rep and set up SAS North Devon which successfully campaigned for the building of Baggy Point Sewage Treatment Works at Croyde Bay. She became a Director of SAS in 2000 and remained in post until the birth of her daughter. SAS named her an Honorary Life Member in 2005 and she continues the original ‘Campaign for Clean Seas’ to this day. She became Co-ordinator of Seas at Risk Federation, an international federation of marine environment NGOs in 2001 and has been an independent marine environment consultant since 2004. In 2017 she started to recruit Brighton & Hove schools to the national SAS Plastic Free Schools programme in a bid to help the city win the Plastic Free Communities award. Alongside Atlanta Cook’s work on marine pollution she has been raising awareness of ecological and ethical issues within the Brighton community for many years, with events such as the Bosnia Festival in 1994, Greenwaves Radio in 1995 and the Dance Parade on Brighton seafront in 1997. She moved into the renewable energy sector as a conference organiser for the World Sustainable Energy Trade Fair from 1997-2001 and then moved to The Netherlands to work on the marine environment full-time. More recently Atlanta has become a co-founding Trustee of Beacon Hub Brighton CIO, an eco-education and visitor centre for the Beacon Hill Local Nature Reserve next to Rottingdean Windmill www.beaconhubbrighton.org. With the need to teach land regeneration practices to enhance biological diversity becoming ever more urgent she now works as part of the Landtribe collective at Stanmer Organics to skill share and encourage regenerative agriculture projects here and abroad. “Be part of the solution to global pollution. 7: Episode 7 - Kirsten Chick

Kirsten Chick is a nutritional therapist, educator, author and speaker. Qualifying in 2003, she offers a nourishing, effective and empowering approach to nutrition, which she shares in one-to-one consultations, in the classroom and in her book, Nutrition Brought to Life. Kirsten has taught at several colleges over the years, and currently leads modules in nutrition, holistic living and pathophysiology to degree students at East Sussex College. She has also written and delivered modules for specialist courses in Menopause, Fertility and Integrative Oncology, and spoke at last year's Your Life and Cancer conference. Kirsten still holds her own workshops and short courses on various health-related topics, alongside running a busy nutrition practice. Kirsten's book, Nutrition Brought to Life, was published in August 2020 and has been well received, including by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who said "I was really delighted to come across Nutrition Brought to Life by Kirsten Chick, which is clearly tuned in to the latest scientific evidence on diet, and also feels inspiring, compassionate and achievable for the reader. 6: Episode 6: Barbara Wilkinson

Hayley North & Kirsten Chick talk herbs, have an inspiring conversation with Barbara Wilkinson from The Herb Society, and then share a recipe and the nutritional benefits of parsley. Following a lifelong passion for health and nutrition, Barbara qualified as a Consultant Medical Herbalist in 2012. She is a member of the College of Medicine and Integrated Health, and runs The Springfield Clinic of Natural Healing in Cheshire. Barbara is an advocate of cultivating the use of plants in everyday life and keen to empower people with the confidence to embrace food as medicine. As well as running her own practice, Barbara is a Trustee for The Herb Society and has appeared as a guest speaker at numerous events and conferences. She has an allotment, where she grows produce that is used for medicines within the practice, and has worked with The Herb Society on designing gardens for the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. In 2018, she appeared in the BBC’s coverage of the RHS Flower Show, as part of a special segment looking at fermented foods. She recently supported Horticulturist Alys Fowler in producing her new book A Modern Herbal.

5: Episode 5: Sara Fernee

Hayley North & Kirsten Chick discuss the new National Food Strategy proposals, and then talk food, community and wellbeing with Sara Fernee of the Very Local Food Hubs. With recipe, cooking and nutrition tips from Hayley and Kirsten. Sara Fernee is a Community Champion and social entrepreneur who lives and works in Brighton, East Sussex, in the UK. An artist, a teacher and a forest school leader; Sara is passionate about reconnecting people with nature, with seasonality and the benefits of spending time outdoors. She established Fernee Forest Club in 2016, and has worked with schools and other organisations, to develop biodiversity and to plant 100s of trees in Brighton. Fernee Forest Club creates opportunities for children and young people to have regular experiences in nature; using the forest school approach to encourage curiosity, creativity, adventure and to develop skills and confidence along the way. Sara also developed the Local Wild Spaces Project in 2018, a collaborative project that enables people to discover, value and protect the green spaces on their doorsteps. During the first lockdown of 2020, Sara joined forces and created The Very Local Food Hubs project, in an area of East Brighton, in response to local need and concern about an exasperated food poverty crisis. Sara received the Community Champion award from the TDC (Trust For Developing Communities) for her work and volunteering in Bevendean.

4: Episode 4: Darren Abrahams

Hayley North & Kirsten Chick talk food, community and wellbeing with Darren Abrahams. Darren Abrahams is a singer, coach, trauma therapist and trainer working internationally as a facilitator and project leader in the fields of personal, cultural and community development. Darren is co-founder of The Human Hive a CIC working with individuals and organisations to make a more welcoming and inclusive world. He is on the steering team and head of pastoral care for The Complete Freedom of Truth, an international youth-led project developing global youth citizenship through culture and the arts and is a trainer and Wellbeing Adviser for Musicians Without Borders where he trains musicians to use music for peace building. As a singer Darren performed internationally for companies such as The Young Vic, English National Opera, The Royal Opera, Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Wexford Opera. In 2021 he will be singing the title role in Nigel Osborne’s opera Naciketa at the London South Bank and co-creating new opera BEAM with soprano and empowerment coach Nadine Benjamin. Hayley North & Kirsten Chick talk food, community and wellbeing with empowerment photographer Anna of Heardinlondon Photography. With recipe, cooking and nutrition tips from Hayley and Kirsten. Anna of Heardinlondon is an empowerment photographer and circus expert, with a strong focus on social justice and how to find creative solutions to help people reclaim their bodies. She has spent 20 years running one of the UK’s premiere circus agencies, Missing Link Productions. For 6 years she was UK Director of Operations for Circus Kathmandu, a social circus which works with survivors of human trafficking and other vulnerable situations. More recently, Anna has set up True You Today which supports self-defined Survivors. Anna’s event credits include the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, choreography for Universal Pictures and working on a cabaret slot with Liza Minelli. She has also done a TEDTalk on Peace and Protest. Her photography work has been printed in the Guardian, BBC, Huffington Post and Times among others. In 2020 she won an honourable mention for the Margaret Cameron street photography award. Anna believes that the core tenet of buddhism – the reverence of life – is what threads all these paths together and keeps her striving for creative new ways to make sure no one gets left behind. 2: North & Chick Episode 2: with Elly Hargreave

Hayley North & Kirsten Chick talk food, community and wellbeing with Elly Hargreave of Pedal People. With recipe, cooking and nutrition tips from Hayley and Kirsten. Elly Hargreave is Captain and Co-founder of Pedal People, a small Brighton charity set up in 2017.Pedal People brings regular year-round outdoor “wind-in-hair adventures” to the elderly living in care homes, in the form of cycle rides around Brighton. They go to lots of places including parks, allotments and the seafront. The special Trikes, called ‘Trishaws’ enable the elder riders to sit up front and be piloted by volunteers. After rides, people report feeling ‘awake again’, ‘alive’, ‘happy’, ‘less anxious or depressed’ and ‘sleeping better’. This year, Pedal People are expanding to offer accessible types of cycles to all ages and abilities. They are investing in wheelchair adaptable, side-by-side tandems, hand-cycles, tricycles, recumbents and standard cycles. Elly set up the charity with Duncan Henderson, who managed to get the first specialist trike donated. She has previously led three charities, co-founded two and is a former trustee of Brighton Carers Centre. In total, Elly has 30 years experience in corporate, public and private sectors including as a BBC Broadcast Journalist and Human Rights Campaigns Manager at The Body Shop International.

1: North & Chick Episode 1: with Susie Cunningham

Hayley North & Kirsten Chick talk food, community and wellbeing with Susie Cunningham of The Flourish Kitchen. With recipe, cooking and nutrition tips from Hayley and Kirsten. Susie Cunningham is a therapeutic wellbeing practitioner working with children and young people, from disadvantaged backgrounds in inner city London. Susie has worked within the charity sector for many years, including projects overseas in India and Spain. She also worked with ‘kids company’ from 2011 - 2015: Here Susie started out as a keyworker, and saw an opportunity to get involved with the food and cooking side, where things literally ‘flourished’ from there. She instigated change in how cooking was approached and taught, bringing her therapeutic approach to the programmes. She ended up creating 5 after school clubs per week, a Friday night teenagers group, a mums group and a baking group. Susie then went on to train at the Institute of Art Therapy in Education and has centered her therapeutic work with young people, around her love and passion for food. Susie also founded a network of wellbeing practitioners, who all work with at risk children through therapeutic mediums, called The Flourish Kitchen. Here she combines the roots and principles of integrative art psychotherapy and youth work, with food education.
