What Does It Really Mean to Repent?

Pastor Randy explores Jesus' command to repent, challenging the common assumption that repentance is only about giving up sin. THE GREEK WORD: Repent (Greek: metanoeo) is a compound word: Meta = a change (as in metamorphosis) Noia = a manner of thinking (as in paranoia) Together: A radical change in the way we think and live. It's not just a simple change of mind. It's completely reorienting how you think about life. JESUS' TEACHING: When Jesus says repent, He often doesn't add "of your sins." He says "repent and believe" or "repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." The point: Turn around. Change your perspective. Reorient your life. MORE THAN JUST SIN: Jesus tells His disciples: "If you want to follow Me, give up your own way." This includes: Giving up your own sins (yes) Giving up your own aspirations (they may not be sinful, just not His best) Giving up your own goals (they may be good, but not God's goals) Giving up your own perspective THE HEBREWS ILLUSTRATION: "Strip off every weight that slows you down, and especially the sin that easily trips us up... Run with endurance the race God has set before us." A runner removes every weight, not because extra clothing is sinful, but because it slows them down. Similarly, there are things you may need to give up that aren't sinful but ARE slowing you down. EXAMPLE: THE PHARISEES: The Pharisees washed their hands ritually before eating. Nothing sinful about hand-washing. But when they relied on that ritual as a symbol of their relationship with God instead of focusing on God Himself, Jesus said they needed to repent, reorient their priorities. THE TEDDY ROOSEVELT EXAMPLE: Born severely asthmatic, Roosevelt's father told him: "You have the mind, but not the body. Without the body, the mind can't go as far as it should." Roosevelt didn't just give up being sickly (not a sin). He radically changed his life: Lifted weights daily Took boxing lessons (and later jujitsu) Took "point-to-point walks" crossing creeks and climbing cliffs Developed "the strenuous life" He changed from a sickly child to leading the charge up San Juan Hill and becoming President. His rule: "Comparison is the thief of joy." When the Republican Party asked him to control his rebellious daughter Alice, he refused, saying "I cannot be president AND control Alice. I will not compare my daughter to yours." THE FOUR-STEP PROCESS FOR CHANGE: Identify what you want to stop doing - Name it specifically Learn what Scripture says about what you want to change Identify what you want to begin doing - Don't just stop; start something new Learn what Scripture says about what you want to begin EXAMPLES: Stop: Excessive screen time → Start: Two meaningful conversations daily Stop: Eating processed sugar → Start: Eating more vegetables and fruits Stop: Sedentary lifestyle → Start: Walking 8,000 steps daily THE BOTTOM LINE: Repentance isn't just about sin. It's about change, real, radical change in how you think and live. Maybe it's giving up something good for something better. Maybe it's redirecting your energy toward God's aspirations for you, not yours. Jesus says repent. He means change. Actually do something different. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What do YOU need to repent of and change? becomehope.com

Is There Such a Thing as Objective Truth?

Pastor Randy explores Jesus' command to "Go and Learn" truth and speak truth, in a world increasingly convinced objective truth doesn't exist. THE PROBLEM:Over half of Americans (54%) believe all truth is subjective. Almost two-thirds (64%) believe truth is relative—there's no right or wrong, just "my truth" and "your truth." Only 42% base truth on God. 16% on personal certainty. 15% on scientific proof. 18% say there is NO truth at all. JESUS' COMMAND:Jesus gives the command to "Go and Learn" three times: Matthew 9:13 - "Go and learn the meaning of Scripture. I want mercy, not sacrifice." (Learn obedience over religious embellishment) Matthew 11:28-29 - "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me." (Learn rest in His commands, not burdensome traditions) Matthew 24:32 - "Learn this lesson from the fig tree." (Learn to read God's timing in what you observe) THE FOUNDATION:David says in Psalm 19: "God's instructions are perfect, trustworthy, right, clear, pure, and true." There IS objective truth. But today, that idea is under attack. THE HISTORY: 2004: Fact-checkers emerged to verify political claims2012: Two competing fact-checkers (one favoring each party)2016: Fact-checkers abandoned. Social media became the arbiter of "truth"Today: "Truth" is whatever you find on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE:"We hold these truths to be self-evident."Our nation was founded on objective truth. Three of them: All men are created equal (echoed in Galatians: all are one in Christ)Endowed by their Creator with unalienable rightsLife, liberty, and pursuit of happiness (defined as freedoms that don't infringe on others' freedoms) JESUS AND PILATE:John 18 - When Pilate asks Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus responds about His kingdom not being of this world. He says: "I was born to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize what I say is true." Pilate responds: "What is truth?"That question has echoed for 2,000 years. The rejection of objective truth isn't new, it goes back to Jesus' time. THE SOURCE OF TRUTH:Jesus is clear: "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6).Truth comes from Jesus Himself and His Word. God's Word IS truth. THE ENEMY'S LIE:Satan is the "father of lies." He would love nothing more than for you to believe there is no objective truth, that you follow your way and others follow theirs. That's his greatest deception. THE REVOLUTION:George Orwell: "In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."Selwyn Duke: "The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." THE CALL:Go and learn the truth. Then speak it. In doing so, you start a revolution against the kingdom of lies. How? Identify the lie in your sphere of influenceFind the corresponding truth that replaces itPray for the right time, place, and wordsSpeak the truth, and start a revolution 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What lie do you need to speak truth against?becomehope.com #IsThereObjectiveTruth #GoAndLearn #SpeakTheTruth #StartARevolution #ObjectiveTruth #JesusIsTheTruth #GodWord #TruthMatters #NewHopeChurch #PastorRandy #AllIveCommanded #TruthinALieWorld #RevolutionaryAct #FatherOfLies #SatansDception

Who Does Jesus Really Use to Change the World?

Pastor Zach walks through John 4, the entire chapter, exploring Jesus' commands and the unexpected people He uses to accomplish His mission. THE SETUP:Jesus is traveling through Samaria (a place He's not supposed to be). He meets a woman at a well, a Samaritan woman (Jews and Samaritans don't associate). She's been married five times and is living with a man who isn't her husband. This encounter breaks every cultural rule. THE CONVERSATION:Jesus offers her "living water," eternal life. She thinks He means physical water. He presses deeper, asking her to get her husband. When she admits she has no husband, Jesus reveals He knows her entire story: five previous husbands, now living with a man who isn't her husband.Instead of condemning her, He invites her into transformation. THE SHIFT:The woman asks about where to worship, the mountain of the Samaritans or the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. Jesus responds: "The time is coming, actually, it's now, when true worshippers will worship in spirit and in truth." Location doesn't matter. Denomination doesn't matter. What matters is worshipping God through the Holy Spirit who lives IN you, walking in His truth. THE DECLARATION:Jesus reveals Himself: "I am the Messiah." THE IMPACT:The woman leaves her water jar and runs into town to tell everyone about Jesus. Many Samaritans believe because of her testimony. When Jesus teaches them, they say: "We no longer believe just because of what YOU said. We've heard for ourselves, and we know this man is the Savior of the world." THE HARVEST REALITY:Jesus tells His disciples: "Open your eyes. The harvest is ripe. It's ready to be reaped." He explains: "One sows and another reaps. You haven't done the hard work, but you're reaping the benefit of others' labor." THE KEY INSIGHT:Not everyone who plants is the one who reaps. Not every evangelist sees the conversion. Some plant seeds. Some water. Some reap. God uses the whole process. THE SECOND SIGN:A Roman official (hated by Jews) comes to Jesus begging Him to heal his dying son. Jesus tells him: "Go. Your son will live." The man believes without seeing proof. He takes Jesus at His word. When he arrives home, his son is healed at the exact moment Jesus spoke. The entire household believes. THE PATTERN:Both the Samaritan woman and the Roman official are outsiders. Neither is "official." Neither is an "expert." Yet Jesus uses them powerfully. The disciples, trained directly by Jesus, are sitting around questioning things. Meanwhile, the woman who's been married five times becomes the evangelist who brings an entire town to Jesus. THE COMMAND:Go. Plant seeds. Water. Reap. Do the will of the Father. Open your eyes to the harvest. Trust that God makes the seed grow, you don't. Don't rely on sales pitches. Go relational. Go long-term. Go love. And understand: It's not the experts Jesus uses. It's the people willing to say yes. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 How has God used you unexpectedly? becomehope.com

What Will You Nail to the Cross?

Final sermon in "Set Free" Galatians series. Pastor Randy summarizes the entire book and leaves us with two critical questions. WHAT GALATIANS IS ABOUT:The problem: False teachers said you must become Jewish to be a Christian. You need works PLUS faith. Paul's solution: The gospel comes directly from God. Christ's sacrifice alone is enough. Period. WHAT WE'RE SET FREE FROM: Freedom from the lawFreedom from your past (God cares what you are, not what you were)Freedom from sinFreedom from legalism (the false belief that you must do something to earn salvation) WHAT WE'RE SET FREE TO: Free to belong to a new family (the church—both Jews and Gentiles equally)Free to submit to the SpiritFree to submit to each other (accountability and community) THE BIBLICAL PROOF:Paul uses Abraham to show the gospel is in the Old Testament itself:Abraham BELIEVED God. Genesis 15: God promised descendants as numerous as the stars. Abraham believed, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Then Abraham failed—he tried to help God out by having a child with Hagar (Genesis 16). Ishmael represented works/human effort. Isaac represented faith/God's promise. The point: Faith alone. Not faith + works. AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS:The ground is level. No preference for Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free. Everyone has the same access to salvation through faith in Christ. TWO CRITICAL QUESTIONS FOR TODAY:Question 1: What do you need to nail to the cross?Specifically: self-gratification, self-worship, self-promotion, forcing your opinions/way on others. Paul says crucify your self-centeredness. That's the way of the world. You'll have to do it EVERY DAY. Question 2: What does the Spirit need to incorporate into your life?Specifically: loving God, loving neighbors, finding God's purpose, finding God's timing, showing mercy, staying true to the end, giving God control. THE BOTTOM LINE:We're not only set free FROM things. We're set free FOR things.Don't go back to slavery (whether legalism, sin, or self-centeredness).  You've been set free. Live like it. And do it with community. You need others to hold you accountable. You need to help others grow. You need others to help you grow. FINAL TAKEAWAY:Be crucified with Christ EVERY DAY. Nail your selfishness to the cross. Submit to the Spirit. And do good to everyone. That's Galatians. That's the gospel. That's freedom. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What will YOU nail to the cross?becomehope.com

Are You Living as an Adopted Child of God?

Week 5 of "Set Free" Galatians series. Today: Adoption to Sonship. THE CORE TRUTH:You're not just forgiven. You're ADOPTED. You're not a guest in God's family, you're a CHILD. You're an HEIR. Galatians 3:27-29: "All who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ. There's no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. You are all one in Christ Jesus. You are true children of Abraham. You are his heirs." WHAT JESUS DID:Jesus lived a perfect life in obedience to the law. He conquered the flesh, defeated sin and death, and took back all authority from spiritual rulers. Then, He offers adoption. Galatians 4:4-7: "God sent His Son to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so He could adopt us as His very own children." THE STORY OF TWO SONS:Paul uses Abraham's two sons as archetypes:Ishmael (born to Hagar, the slave) = What happens when you DON'T trust God. You try to take life into your own hands. Results: broken relationships, suffering, exile. Isaac (born to Sarah, the free woman) = What happens when you trust God. You let God work. Results: fulfillment of promise, blessing, inheritance.Paul: "We're children born out of the promise of God, not out of trying to cling to works." THE JUDAIZERS PROBLEM:Some want to add works (circumcision, laws) back into faith. Paul says: NO.It's either GRACE through faith OR works. Not both. Works don't bring faith. Works don't bring salvation. Salvation is only a free gift through faith in Jesus. WHAT YOU'RE SET FREE FROM: Slavery to the lawSlavery to the fleshSlavery to spiritual rulers WHAT YOU'RE SET FREE TO:You're set free TO be LOVED by God. Better yet, you're set free to be LIKED by God. God doesn't just love you; He LIKES you. He actually wants to be in your life. THE FAMILY BUSINESS:Once you've accepted adoption, you join the family business: bringing others into the family of God. Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane (John 17:21-23): "That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. So that the world may believe. I've given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one." Jesus' whole point: Getting the family back together. YOU GET TO: Live righteously before GodLove God and love peopleDo this freely without fear of failureEnjoy being a son or daughter of GodJoin Jesus in restoring the family When you fall, you don't say "sin's fine." You get up and say "I'm sorry, God. Help me be better." That's who you get to be. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What does adoption mean to YOU? becomehope.com

Are You a Child of God or a Slave?

THE PROMISE:Galatians 3:27-29 All who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ. There's no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. You are all one in Christ Jesus. Now that you belong to Christ, you are true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you." We're talking about being SET FREE from slavery to becoming ADOPTED CHILDREN of God. BEFORE CHRIST:We were like children under guardians until maturity. We were slaves to three things: The Law - Religious tradition and worksThe Flesh - The ways of the worldSpiritual Rulers - Fallen angelic beings given authority over nations at Babel WHAT JESUS DID:Jesus lived a perfect life in obedience to the law. He conquered the flesh. He defeated sin and death. He took back all authority from spiritual rulers. And then, He offers adoption. Galatians 4:4-7: When the right time came, God sent His Son. God sent Him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so He could adopt us as His very own children. He didn't just forgive us. He ADOPTED us. We're not just forgiven; we're FAMILY. THE STORY OF TWO SONS:Paul uses Abraham's two sons as archetypes:Ishmael (born to Hagar, the slave) = What happens when you DON'T trust God and try to take life into your own hands. Results: broken relationships, suffering, exile. Isaac (born to Sarah, the free woman) = What happens when you trust God. Results: the fulfillment of promise, blessing, inheritance. Paul: "We are children born out of the promise of God, not out of trying to cling to works." THE CORE TRUTH:You can either live by WORKS (trying to earn God's favor) or by GRACE (trusting God's promise). But you can't do both. The Judaizers want to add works (circumcision, laws) to faith. Paul says: NO. That's Ishmael energy, trying to do it yourself. That's slavery.True freedom, true sonship, comes through FAITH in what Jesus accomplished. THE IMPLICATIONS:When you're adopted as God's child, you get:- God's protection (He blesses those who bless you; He curses those who curse you)- God's provision- God's purpose (You become a blessing to all you encounter)- God's inheritance (You're His heir) But it also means: You're no longer trying to earn His love through performance. You REST in His love. THE QUESTION:Are you still trying to be "good enough" through works? Or have you accepted adoption through faith? You can't be both a slave and a child. You have to choose. 🔔 Subscribe | 👍 Like | 💬 What does adoption mean to YOU?becomehope.com

What Did You Think Would Save You?

Week 3 of our "Set Free" Galatians series. Set free from what we THOUGHT would save us. Peter came to Antioch, friendly with Gentiles. But when Paul's Jewish friends arrived from Jerusalem, Peter CHANGED, became standoffish. Paul called him out publicly. GALATIANS 2:15-16:"We know a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law." TRANSLATION ISSUE:Greek doesn't say "faith IN Jesus." It says "faith OF Jesus"—Jesus' FAITHFULNESS. We're saved by JESUS' FAITHFULNESS in going to the cross, not our works of the law. GENESIS 22: ABRAHAM & ISAACGod told Abraham: "Sacrifice Isaac." Isaac CARRIED the wood up the mountain. He was at least a teenager. Why didn't he fight back? Judaism says: Isaac was a WILLING PARTICIPANT. THE LOCATION:2 Chronicles 3:1 - Mount Moriah, where Abraham offered Isaac, is the same mountain. The highest point? Golgotha. Calvary. Where Jesus was crucified. IN HEAVEN:Son: "Father, next time there'll be no angel to stop it, will there?"Father: "No, Son. The sacrifice will be carried out."Abraham/Isaac is a PREMONITION of the Father sacrificing the Son on the SAME SPOT. GALATIANS 2:20:"I live because of JESUS' FAITHFULNESS in going to the cross."WHAT DID YOU THINK WOULD SAVE YOU?Church? Tithe? Baptism? Confirmation? Can You Really Be Set Free From Your Past?

Week 2 of our "Set Free" Galatians series. Today we won't even mention Galatians—we're setting up framework by looking at PAUL'S STORY.Satan uses our past as a weapon against us in two ways: Believers plagued by their past - Every time they sin, they remember who they've been. It holds them from recovering, from coming to God for forgiveness and guidance. Keeps people from coming to Christ - Their past convinces them they're too far gone. PAUL'S PAST:Acts 8:1-2 - "Saul APPROVED the stoning of Stephen." Stephen was the first martyr of the church—a good, honorable, godly man. Paul was there and APPROVED his killing. Acts 8:3 - "Saul started making trouble for the church. He went from house to house, arresting men and women and putting them in jail." Acts 22:4-5 - Paul recounts: "I persecuted followers of the Lord's Way. I had them arrested and put in jail. I even voted for them to be killed." Paul was going to Damascus with authority to arrest believers. But on that road, Jesus met him. THE DAMASCUS ROAD:"Saul, Saul, why do you PERSECUTE ME?"Paul: "Who are you, Lord?""I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting." When Paul persecutes the church, he's persecuting JESUS. When you harm God's people, you harm Christ. And Paul CHANGES. Completely. Post-conversion Paul writes most of our New Testament. 1 TIMOTHY 1:15-16:"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—and I am the WORST of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of His great patience." PAUL'S SIN ISN'T UNIQUE:Paul says he's the WORST sinner. But is he? Is Paul's sin worse than Jeffrey Dahmer's? Than Hitler's? Than yours? Than mine? Paul is looking at his sin and recognizing: ALL sin is equally heinous in God's eyes. Murder, lying, gossip, it's ALL the same. And if God can forgive PAUL, the chief of sinners, He can forgive ANYONE. THE POINT:You've been set free from your past. But Jesus never promises a free RIDE.2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - God comforts us so we can comfort others with the same comfort we received. Your past, all the garbage, all the pain, all the sin, GOD USES IT. He uses it to set someone ELSE free. Paul's past made him uniquely qualified to preach grace. Your past makes you uniquely qualified to reach people NO ONE ELSE can reach. BOTTOM LINE:Can you be set free from your past? YES. Paul is proof. But God doesn't waste your past. He USES it.
