Join the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto for Songwalks: Choral music for your daily journey. Each episode is designed to accompany your walk through the city or countryside, at dawn or at dusk. They are the perfect way to let your imagination loose as you move through the world around you. You will hear music by composers throughout the ages recorded by the Amadeus Choir, and spoken word poetry by leading Canadian writers, as well as members of the Amadeus Choir. ABOUT THE AMADEUS CHOIR OF GREATER TORONTO Enlivening Toronto’s arts community for 47 years, the award-winning Amadeus Choir is a semi-professional choir of auditioned voices from Toronto and the surrounding areas. The Choir champions the best of choral music and premieres works of Canadian and international composers through a self-produced Toronto concert series, guest performances, and special events. Known well beyond Toronto through tours, festivals, recordings, and national and international radio broadcasts, the Choir collaborates with many professional performing arts organizations in the GTA. The Amadeus Choir is proud to take a leading role in educating the next generation of choral musicians by providing workshops for conductors, composers, singers, and students. The Choir is known for its strong support of Canadian music, and regularly commissions work from established and emerging Canadian composers. In 2019, after celebrating the 35-year leadership of Lydia Adams, the Choir welcomed Kathleen Allan as Artistic Director and Conductor.

    Songwalk with Eleanor Daley

    In the final episode of season two, you’ll meet Eleanor Daley, another one of Canada’s most accomplished choral composers. She’s a conductor, a composer of both sacred and secular music, and she was the collaborative pianist of the Amadeus Choir for many years. Her work is sung and celebrated all over the world. In 2001, Lydia Adams and the Amadeus Choir commissioned Eleanor to compose a Te Deum, a Latin text traditionally sung on celebratory occasions. It’s a song of praise and thanksgiving and the words have inspired dozens of great composers. Eleanor’s version is among the finest there is, and she’s here to share it with you in this episode.

    Songwalk with Cris Derksen

    In episode four of our second season of our Songwalks podcast, you’ll meet Cris Derksen, a composer and cellist who is originally from Northern Alberta. She now lives in Toronto and tours the world making music that weaves together her classical training with Indigenous traditions. Lately Cris has been making music for dance, theatre and animation, as well as choirs and symphony orchestras. The Amadeus Choir invited Cris to write a piece. It’s called Mass for Nipiy - that’s the Cree word for water. On Songwalks today, you’ll be hearing just one segment from that Mass. It’s called Prayer for Mist. It’s a beautiful portrait of the cleansing power of mist. Of water shimmering in the air and renewing the Earth. The words and music are by Cris Derksen and it’s sung by the Amadeus Choir.

    Songwalk with Ian Cusson

    In episode three of our second season of our Songwalks podcast, you’ll meet Ian Cusson who lives just a couple of hours outside of Toronto. Ian composes art song, opera, choral music, and orchestral work. He’s of Metis and French Canadian descent and his work often explores the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures. He’s worked with the Canadian Opera Company and the National Arts Centre and is making a huge impact on the classical music scene in Canada. Today you’ll be hearing a gorgeous piece that he wrote for the Amadeus Choir and the Guelph Chamber Choir. It’s called will I, night. Music he set to a poem by the Cree Metis poet Marilyn Dumont.

    Songwalk with Deantha Edmunds

    This season we are celebrating our 50h anniversary season. We do a lot of work with Canadian composers and we have premiered dozens of commissions. Recently we have been collaborating with some of the best Indigenous composers writing today. Indigenous people have stewarded this land since time immemorial and we are so grateful to make music here. This season on Songwalks, you’ll join some of these amazing creators on a short musical stroll. They’ll take you on a tour of some of their music and tell you a bit about what inspires them.  In episode two, you’ll meet Deantha Edmunds. She is Canada’s first Inuk professional classical singer. She was recently appointed a member of the Order of Canada for her work as a performer, writer, composer, and mentor. Deantha joined the Amadeus Choir for the creation of beautiful song that braids her own Inuk heritage with the music of Hildegard von Bingen, a mystic and visionary from the twelfth century. As you’ll hear, it’s a powerful combination.
