During my two months in Uganda, I had the privilege of working alongside the extraordinary midwives at Mother Health International, a birth house rooted in compassion, skill, and deep commitment to the mothers they serve. In this episode, recorded outside the birth house with the sounds of chickens wandering in the background, I sit down with several midwives to hear their stories — how they found their way into this calling, what they love most about their work, and the realities and challenges facing the women in their community. These conversations are honest, heartfelt, and humbling. We talk about resilience, resourcefulness, and the shared devotion to mothers that transcends geography and culture. Being there reminded me that while birth unfolds in very different contexts around the world, the heart of midwifery — presence, trust, and care — is universal.     Holding Birth and Death: Trust, Responsibility, and the Sacred Art of Midwifery

    In this profound and intimate conversation, I sit down with Claire Eccleston—grandmother, longtime homebirth midwife, Spinning Babies® Approved Trainer, and founder of Womb Rhythms, an online school devoted to the traditional art of BirthCraft. Claire shares her journey into midwifery and how her own free births shaped an unwavering trust in the intelligence of the body and baby—while simultaneously holding the sobering truth that birth carries real risk. Sophie brings a powerful sociological lens to motherhood, exploring how maternal identity, guilt, anger, and burnout are shaped by social and cultural systems—not personal failure. Together, they explore Sophie’s matrescence journey, the evolution of her Motherhood Studies Practitioner Certification, and the critical distinction between motherhood as a social institution and mothering as an empowered, relational practice. The conversation also dives into mothering as resistance, the maternal anger–guilt cycle, and ways mothers can interrupt shame and reclaim agency.
