    Politics of Identity in the US with Dr. Nadia Brown

    In this episode, I’m joined by my cohost Mia Shuman, a Junior Double-Majoring in Psychology and Politics at Menlo College. Mia and I are joined by Dr.Nadia Brown, who is Political Science Professor at Purdue University. Dr. Brown's research interests lie broadly in identity politics, legislative studies, and Black women's studies. She specializes in Black women’s politics and holds a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies. While trained as a political scientist, her scholarship on intersectionality seeks to push beyond disciplinary constraints to think more holistically about the politics of identity. In this episode, Professor Brown takes us on a deep dive on the obstacles women of color face when running for higher political positions and in the Political Science Community. Additionally, she touches upon her contributions to the #MeToo movement.

    Dr. Jeniffer Lawless on Gender Stereotypes in Politics

    In this episode, I’m joined by my cohost Mia Shuman, a Junior Double-Majoring in Psychology and Politics at Menlo College. Mia and I are joined by Dr. Jennifer Lawless, who is the Commonwealth Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia. Jen’s research focuses on political ambition, campaigns and elections, and media and politics. She is the author or co-author of six books, including Women on the Run: Gender, Media, and Political Campaigns in a Polarized Era (with Danny Hayes) and It Still Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office (with Richard L. Fox). Her research, which has been supported by the National Science Foundation, has appeared in numerous academic journals and is regularly cited in the popular press. In this episode, Dr. Lawless talks about the Trump Effect on women running for office and her research about how women can combat gender stereotypes in politics.

    The Symbolic Empowerment of Kamala Harris with Dr. Simien

    Today’s guest is Evelyn Simien. Evelyn is Professor of Political Science, and Director of the Race, Ethnicity, and Politics (REP) Master’s degree program at University of Connecticut. Her third book, Historic Firsts: How Symbolic Empowerment Changes U.S. Politics (Oxford University Press, 2015), considers whether candidates like Shirley Chisholm in 1972 and Jesse Jackson in 1984 as well as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in 2008 mobilize voters through emotional appeals while combating stereotypes and providing more inclusive representation.  In this episode, Dr. Simien will explore the Symbolic Empowerment effect of Kamala Harris being elected Vice President of the United States.
