    Pete Hellicar featuring Tom Pickard

    Hi and welcome back to the skate creative podcast I’m Joel curtis and im a musician and skateboarder  Joining me on the podcast this week is Pete Hellicar  Pete is a creative director working in art, design and technology. In 1997 Pete along with Jon Robson started the British skateboard company Unabomber in 1997. Originally called Borstal, UnaBomber brought a subversive perspective to British skateboarding in its graphics and ethos. In a very different approach to other fledgling companies at the time , that were still influenced by clean and cool US brands, Unabomber brought a fresh and visceral take on what a Uk brand could be. Always inclusive and outspoken , its he/she/they mantra was very much at the centre of its manifesto. It  brought skateboarders Mark Channer, Vaughan Baker, Harry Bastard, Paul Silvester Alan Rushbrooke and Frank Stephens to the attention of a growing UK skate scene with parts in videos , UNA Promo and Headcleaner.  Also joining me on this episode is Film maker Tom Pickard. We talk to Pete about the inception of Unabomber, skateboardings influence on his creativity and vice versa, working on the side effects of urethane show and his work in and out of skateboarding.     Elsewhere - The Story Of Uk Skateboarding 1987- 2002 With Neil MacDonald and Ben Powell

    Joining me on the podcast this week is Neil Macdonald  Neil is a writer, journalist and archivist who has contributed to most major uk skateboarding publications for nearly 20 years . His instagram account @Scienceversuslife has been a flagship of quality documenting skateboardings history and cultural impact.  Neil’s new book Elsewhere is the definitive oral history of the uk skate scene from 1987 till 2002 charting the explosion sparked by Back to the future to the dawn of digital frontier.  Neil spent over 6 years compiling photos and interviews with everyone who was pivotal in that journey and the result is a compelling and inspirational work that truly defines uk skateboardings cultural importance, influence and historical value.  Joining me on this conversation with Neil is Ben Powell who was editor of Sidewalk Magazine for over 20 years. We discuss with Neil the process for wiring and assembling Elsewhere as well as what inspired him to undertake such an all consuming project.     Cata Diaz featuring Hilda Quick

    Hi and welcome back to the skate creative podcast my name is Joel Curtis and I’m a musician and skateboarder. My guest this week is Cata Diaz. Cata is from Valparaíso in Chile and has spent the last few years living in Barcelona and London. Her new part Claritea premiered recently on Grey skate mags YouTube channel was edited by Hilda Quick, who also joins us on this conversation  I talk to Cata about her time starting skateboarding in Chile, making the move from there to Barcelona, the positives and negatives of to social media, her influences and inspirations, Filming in the uk, her love of Leeds and the North , meeting Hilda ,adjusting to the cold, and learning to trust the cards and manifesting your destiny!  Cata’s style, personality and infectious positivity have made her  rise in skateboarding seem effortless but in this conversation we discuss how her cancer diagnosis made her draw on all her strength and energy to regain her physical confidence and come out with her most progressive and soulful section yet.     Matthew Wig Worland

    Hi and welcome back to the skate creative podcast my names Joel Curtis and I’m a musician and skateboarder  My guest week is Mathew “Wig” Worland  Wig is one of the most prolific and influential British skate photographers of the last 35 years. Starting his career in a pre digital commercial area of photography , he brought a depth and breadth of knowledge to early uk skate coverage in magazine titles R.A.D, Skate Action and Skateboard! I talk to Wig about, growing up near the Milton Keynes skate scene, working as a commercial photographers assistant, his time at Transworld skateboarding in the 90’s, starting Sidewalk magazine out of the ashes of R.A.D, his move away from skateboard photography and back again , plus his part in the new R.A.D book out In my time in skateboarding I shot some of my favourite photo’s with Wig and  I was lucky enough to travel with him extensively around the U.K in his Volkswagen Jetta.
