“Nerd Spaces and Geekdom are Not Intrinsically White” with Dr. Gabriel Cruz

Growing up as a bi-racial kid to a dad from Mexico and a mom from the American South sounds like a plot of a sitcom. One that Gabriel Cruz has the wit, sharpness, creativity, and voice to star in. He was inspired by his marine biologist grandfather to consider a career working with animals, but the math of it all pointed him in a more creative direction. His parents did not have access to education, which meant Gabriel had to navigate the unwritten rules of academia on his own. Listen to the story of how the kid with a 2.9 GPA earned his PhD and became Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the department of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Dr. Cruz shares some of his research on intersectional critical race analysis of popular culture, especially superhero narratives. His work has appeared in the academic periodicals Journal of Alternative and Community Media and Howard Journal of Communications, as well as in the edited volumes such as Black Panther: Afrofuturism, Gender, Identity, and the Re-Making of Blackness. His forthcoming book Latinidad, Identity Formation, and the Mass Media Landscape: Constructing Pocho Villa addresses how mass media has engaged with the subject of Latinx identity in the United States. Oh, and he dispels 5 myths about people of color in academia. #careerpodcast #blackwomenpodcast #professor #writer #latinoeducator #firstgeneration #mediastudies #criticalracescholar #intersectionality #parasocialrelationshiptheory #salarytransparency WHERE TO FIND GABRIEL Tik Tok & Instagram https://www.tiktok.com/@gacruz_phd Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gacruz_phd/ Office Hours with Dr. C Podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/04b5hujWtCCXLDRf9ptc2c?si=d1e802e6c80a46d3 More things Dr. C https://linktr.ee/GacruzPhD

“Clients Book the Person, Not Just the Service” with Kinetra Stewart

Kinetra Stewart has known she wanted to be a hairstylist since she was 9 years old.  Her grandmother wanted something more stable for her grandchild, so Kinetra waited for something to move her the way the way styling hair did. Declaring 5 different majors at Grambling State University, grinding through a slew of unfulfilling retail jobs, mounting debt, and a career in the military that required inconsistently consistent relocation with her new family finally led Kinetra to enroll in cosmetology school.   Business was so good for that she created her business, The Vintage Hipster, which allowed her to grow into an award-winning stylist in the northeast.  A move to Austin, TX required her to dig into market research to find her niche, earning the trust of Black women who had traumatic hair experiences. Kinetra has expanded her reach through her “Hair What I’m Saying” Podcast, which aims to bridge the gap of understanding between beautypreneurs and consumers.  Join us as we chat about her journey from a small town in Louisiana, how attending both a trade schools and traditional university prepared her to be an entrepreneur, how she educates all people about Black hair, and why all of this makes her a successful podcaster. Oh, we talk about why I no longer go to the homes of stylists to get my hair braided.  #careerpodcast #blackwomenpodcast#entrepreneur #beautypreneur #hairstylist  ALL THINGS KINETRA STEWART THE VINTAGE HIPSTER https://www.thevintagehipster.net/ HAIR WHAT I’M SAYING PODCAST https://www.hairwhatimsaying.com

  3. “The People in Your Circle May Surprise You” with Shareen Harding & Jefferson Brooks

“The People in Your Circle May Surprise You” with Shareen Harding & Jefferson Brooks

Jefferson Brooks grew his career from pizza delivery to a six-figure management role at a big box retail store. His love of dogs led him to become adept at training. People began to rely on Jefferson to better their dogs and, ultimately, their families. He found he was so fulfilled at this work that he left his career to launch Brooks Family K9, a family-owned business that helps dogs and their owners live better together through training in aggression, obedience, loose leash, and early training for puppies. Shareen Harding knew when she was 11 years old that she wanted to be a neonatal ICU nurse. And for 14 years, she’s done just that. A very focused woman who does nothing halfway, her love of dogs propelled her to become the founder and CEO of Kenai’s House, a nonprofit organization providing a safe and healthy environment for abandoned and neglected animals to thrive and have a second chance at life until responsible and loving homes can be found.  Together, Jefferson and Shareen have combined their expertise to offer a comprehensive range of services that allow them to be “here for the lifetime of the pet.”  They offer advice on when you know you’re ready for a dog, how to find the right pet for your family, and tips on preparing to welcome a dog into your home.  As entrepreneurs they also share things they wish they’d known when they launched their organizations.  Oh, and we dig into the dirty side of the industry of dog shelters. #careerpodcast #blackwomenpodcast #entrepreneur #nonprofit #dogs #adoption #dogtraining #rescuedog #fosterfail #rescuelife #kenaishouse #brooksfamilyk9 #doglovers KENAI’S HOUSE, INC. https://kenaishouse.org BROOKS FAMILY K9 https://www.brooksfamilyk9.com
