    Sense and Sensibility, Chapter 40

    After Colonel Brandon departs, Elinor has the unenviable task of telling Edward of his offer. She decides a letter is best, but before she can sit down to write, Edward himself arrives at her door. Despite the awkwardness of the situation, his gratitude toward Colonel Brandon, and toward Elinor, is sincere, and they part on good terms.
