    Episode 10: How We Made This Podcast; Our Final Class Discussion!

    For our final episode Professor Newman led a discussion with more than half the class. We talked about what it was like to have a class on a popular television series and how we went about making the podcast in a few short weeks. At the end, Professor Newman asks each student to talk about at least one thing they learned from someone else in the class.

    Episode 9: Eggs, Legacy, and Nostalgia in HBO's Watchmen

    Brace yourself for an egg pun, or more, because Watchmen is FULL of egg references. From the egg shaped space ship that brings Adrian Viedt back to earth, to the egg farm that Lady Trieu buys from the Clarks, to the egg that may (or may not) contain Dr. Manhattan's residual powers, Watchmen has a thing for eggs. CMU student Anna Toutain brings her interest in egg symbolism to a really interesting discussion with her fellow classmates Nate Roblin and Elle Smith. Nate takes on the tricky subject of Nostalgia---both the fictional prescription drug that Angela ODs on in episode six---as well as the more subtle ways that Watchmen engages with themes of remembering and forgetting. Elle Smith takes on the topic of legacy in another way, by discussing how Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof may have projected some of his own issues surrounding legacy onto HBO's Watchmen.

    Episode 8: Pyrrhonism and Eternal Recurrance in HBO's Watchmen

    In this episode CMU students Baris Denezli and Elle Norman get deep with their philosophical musings on HBO's Watchmen. Baris applies the radical skepticism of the Greek philosopher Pyrrho to the concept of morality in Watchmen, showing how difficult it is for the audience to judge any character as wholly "good" or "evil," given their complex actions and motivations. Elle references a similar concept from Friedrich Nietzsche, the concept of Nihilism, but she spends more time on another of Nietzsche's ideas, that of eternal recurrence. Elle sees that Dr. Manhattan's unusual perception of time---his ability to live simultaneously in the past, present and future---as having some similarities to Nietzsche's notion of time as a flat circle.

    Episode 7: Women, Power, and Stereotypes in HBO's Watchmen

    The creators of HBO's Watchmen did a great job of subverting a lot of comic book story tropes. Instead of a plot that just revolves around literal good guys and bad guys, the lead character in the series is the badass African American Angela Abar, played by Regina Knight. Angela is a bakery owner and an ex-cop who moonlights as the vigilante Sister Night. In this podcast episode, three badass CMU students, Caroline Holmes, Clyzte Sun, and Cristina Pullen go under the hood to show the ways in which the show's creators fell into some unfortunate gendered and racial stereotypes when it came to the leading ladies of Watchmen: Angela Abar, Lady Trieu, and Laurie Blake.

    Episode 6: Interview with MARZ Designer Anthony De Chellis + More on Looking Glass and His Mask

    No doubt, the mask worn by Looking Glass in HBO's Watchmen was a technological marvel. But what were some of the discarded mask designs along the way? Find out in this episode, as MARZ designer Anthony De Chellis talks with CMU student Ana Sabater about what it was like being on the team that created Looking Glass's mask. In the second part of this episode Ana Sabater gets philosophical with Professor Newman about Looking Glass's character and traumatic backstory. Please note: spoilers ahead!

    Episode 5: Interview with Costume Designer Sharen Davis + Cool Costume Conversations

    What would YOUR superhero costume look like, especially if you had to make it at home? That was one of the questions that Sharen Davis was asked by show runner Damon Lindeloff when she was given the job of designing Angela Abar's Sister Knight costume for HBO's Watchmen. In this episode of our podcast, Emmy winning Watchmen Costume Designer Sharen Davis is interviewed by CMU students Victoria Avery and Soumil Mukerjee. Davis talks about the challenge of creating realistic costumes for a series that is both realistic and speculative at the same time. Following the interview, Victoria and Soumil probe the symbolism of a variety of costumes and masks featured on the show. They explore the notion suggested by HBO's Watchmen itself---that masks are used to hide trauma, and, also, as Adrian Viedt proclaims, the idea that masks can "make men cruel."

    Episode 4: The Grammar of Color in HBO's Watchmen

    In this episode CMU students Meera Krishna and Ethan Hicks, along with the Professor of Watching HBO's Watchmen, Kathy M. Newman, take a good look at the way Watchmen creators use color. Ethan came into the Watchmen class as a die-hard fan of the original Watchmen comic series which was published in the 1980s. The 1980s Watchmen was famous for its atypical uses of pinks, purples, oranges and greens----colors not generally seen in the superhero comics of the era. Ethan points out that HBO's Watchmen, in contrast to the original Watchmen comic series, has a color palette more in line with other contemporary superhero movies, such as The Dark Knight or The Avenger films. Meera, In her discussion, focuses on individual pops of color throughout the 2019 television series. She finds that certain colors are linked to certain concepts; yellow often connotes legacy and protection; red is often associated with action and violence. Tune in to hear more!

    Episode 3: Interview with Watchmen Music Supervisor Liza Richardson + a Deep Dive into the Music of Episode 6

    In this episode Watchmen Music Supervisor Liza Richardson is interviewed by CMU students Emily Finger and and Max Robbins. Richardson talks about how her own background in dance and musical theater influences her process! She also explains the business of music selection and rights procurement. Following the interview with Richardson, Emily, Max and Professor Newman home in on the music in episode 6; Emily discusses her research on the African American singing group, the Ink Spots, and Max deconstructs some of the jazz songs that Watchmen score composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross wrote to accompany this  episode. Watchmen episode 6 focuses on the 1930s backstory of the vigilante Hooded Justice---who we learn is Angela Abar's grandfather, the African American NYC policeman Will Reeves.

    Episode 2: Poor Jud is Dead and Other Ways that Watchmen References the Musical Oklahoma

    In this episode CMU students Liggera Allen Edmonds and Elizabeth Van Buskirk dig into all the ways that HBO's Watchmen references the 1943 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Oklahoma. They explain how the WWII era musical whitewashed Westward expansion and Native American genocide, and, how, in its use of Oklahoma, HBO's Watchmen doesn't shy away from addressing colonial violence. They look at the parallels between Watchmen's Chief of Police, Judd Crawford, played by Don Johnson, and compare his character to Jud Fry, the working class villain of Oklahoma, played by Rod Steiger in the 1955 film version of the musical.

    Episode 1: Trauma Porn, Copaganda and Vigilantism in HBO's Watchmen

    For our inaugural episode, CMU students Kirubel Aklilu and Katy Zapanta take on the weighty question: what is the impact of representing African American pain in popular culture? Kirubel and Katy praise HBO's Watchmen for being aware of pitfalls like "trauma porn"---entertainment that exploits black pain for the viewer's pleasure---and, "Copaganda," entertainment that centers a cop's view of the world, but they also take HBO's Watchmen to task for including some scenes that might unnecessarily trigger black pain. They also talk about the history of real life vigilantism in the United States, and the tradition of Americans putting on costumes to fight crime!

    Episode 0: Introducing Tartans Watch the Watchmen

    In the spring of 2021 the Carnegie Mellon University students in Professor Newman's Media class on HBO's Watchmen, created a podcast about the television series. In this intro episode, episode "zero", the student hosts, Cristina Pullen and Katy Zapanta, along with CMU Professor Kathy M. Newman, answer the question, "who will watch the watchmen?" CMU students are called "Tartans" because CMU's founder, Andrew Carnegie, is Scottish. A tartan is a twilled woolen fabric with a plaid design.
