Young people have a different perspective to life generally. Such a different worldview or life experience needs to be understood and appreciated. I’ve been able to encounter and appreciate these different opinions as a mental health counsellor/therapist as well as a parent. Youth + Emo ( youth and emotions)podcast deals with daily life encounters which have direct or indirect effect on mental or emotional well-being of young people. This platform is hoped to highlight those life encounters and offer some advice and encouragement.

    There is always a time when we all stand to be corrected. Nobody gets it right at all time. So making mistakes and missing the mark is what makes us human. We also learn from mistakes( well, that is what is expected) and such learning makes us a better person in  life. People who have excelled in life will tell you they have made so many mistakes and stumbled through many obstacles and huddles. So when someone tells us we are not doing well or corrects us, we should not take it the wrong way if we want to be a better version of ourselves. However criticism can be demeaning and a put down rather than helpful.  So the question becomes : WHEN DOES A CRITICISM OR CORRECTION , CONSTRUCTIVE RATHER THAN DESTRUCTIVE? HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN A GENUINE DESIRE TO MAKE YOU A BETTER VERSION OF YOURSELF RATHER THAN A PUT DOWN OR DEMEANING?     Depression as a mental health condition still comes with stigma. There is still that sense that people who  are depressed or taking antidepressants are different. In other words, that depression is something to be ashamed of. People seem to forget that being depressed does not change who you are. It does not make a bubbly, excitable and funny person less so. Also the feeling of hopelessness( especially at this time ) is something all of us feel albeit it temporary. In  any case, whether our feeling of hopelessness is temporary or lingers on, does not make us less or more of a person we truly are. This episode of YOUTH+EMO podcast gets more into this topic .     Grief is something we will all go through at some point in our lives . Some of us have gone through it already and some are going through it right now. Such emotional upheaval that comes with loss through relationship breakdown or death is inevitable.  Most people are familiar with the 5 stages of grief.     Social media binging is dangerous to your health. The common saying that smoking cigarette is dangerous to your health is something we have heard and read so many times. But a connection between too much consumption or spending hours unend on social media and poor mental and physical well-being is one most do not easily make. Selena Gomez had to stay off internet for a period of time to look after her mental well-being. Do you know how long she stayed off the internet? You have to listen to this episode to find out. It is a 'social media fasting' most of us will find almost impossible to even think possible. Suffice it to say that Selena Gomez found such period of fasting from internet changed her life for good. " I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal", Selena Gomez concluded.
